History

Carrigaline was once a small country village with a population of less than one thousand. Over the past ten to fifteen years however, it has become one of the fastest growing 'Satellite towns' surrounding Cork City. With an ever-increasing population, which is approaching fifteen thousand at present, the community is vital to the life of the town.
The community is made up of people from all walks of life and from all parts of Cork and other counties. Being a relatively new town the population is, as can be expected, very young. This demands a large variety of communi-ty activity with consideration being given to the different cultural and sporting backgrounds of the people who have made Carrigaline their home. This is where both sporting and social clubs have a hugely important role to play in the community. The local GAA club is among the leaders in both of these areas.
The Carrigaline Hurling and Football Club is one of the oldest and most soundly based organisations in the locality. It caters for a wide cross section of the community, provides a broad range of social and sporting services and has a particular emphasis on the provision of healthy recreation for the rapidly expanding young population.
Coinciding with the major population increase of the seventies and before the property price boom the club showed great foresight in investing for the future in projects aimed at keeping the GAA the leaders in community activities. This provided the basis for future developments which today sees a modern sport centre. This includes two full size playing pitches, a train-ing pitch, four 'state of the art' dressing rooms with additional games room and gymnasium overhead, an enclosed hurling and ball alley and a large recreation hall with bar, lounge, meeting rooms and kitchen.
The club has also entered into an innovative partnership with the tennis club, which resulted in the development of four high quality floodlit courts. In recent years the Camogie club has been revived and is now a highly successful unit with an active playing membership of over 200 girls and young women. The club also accommodates track and athletics, aerobics, bowls and several indoor activities such as bingo, cards, céilí, discos an keep-fit classes. It also provides meeting accommodation for a number of local clubs and associations.
