Carrigaline under 15 footballers were away to St. Finbarrs in the final of the city league on Saturday afternoon.
Having been well beaten by St. Michaels, who then went on to be beaten by St. Finbarrs, Carrigaline were under no illusion about the strength of the opposition.
It was a fairly even start with both teams having chances in the opening minutes. The Barrs had the first three points of the game with Carrigs first score not coming until the 19th minute, a point by Stephen Corcoran. This was quickly followed by a point from the boot of Stephen Griffin. The opposition had a goal in the 25th minute. A Craig Neville point put a goal between them, but the Barrs had the last score of the half to put four points between the sides at halftime.
Playing against a very strong wind, Carrigaline had a dream start to the second half when Shane Barry scored a goal in the second minute. A point from Craig Neville levelled the game in the 12th minute. Unfortunately this was to be our last score, and the superior strength of the opposition won out in the end. This was a good performance from the Carrig lads who were very much the underdogs, but were well in the game up until the last 10 minutes.
Patrick Donnellan, Paul Campbell, Peter Ronayne, Peter O’Mahony,
and Joseph Moran played very well for Carrigaline.
Scorers: Shane Barry 1-0, Craig Neville 0-2, Stephen Corcoran, and Stephen Griffin 0-1 each.

Junior A Footballers defeat Shamrocks

Another very busy weekend on the football front, with 5 teams in action. On Saturday the Under 21 footballers travelled to Clonakilty to play a challenge game, losing out by one point 1-7 to 0-11. The Under 21 championship kicks off Saturday week (March 6th.) when we travel to Minane Bridge to play Tracton. The Junior A Footballers had two teams in action on Sunday the highlight being a great four points win over Shamrocks in the South East League. Earlier in the morning we were defeated by Passage in the City League. The Junior B footballers made it two wins out of two by defeating Nemo Rangers in Trabeg. The Intermediate Footballers played O’Donovan Rossa in a challenge game on Sunday evening going down by a point 0-8 to 1-6. A bit more composure in front of goal would have seen a different result.

While all of this was happening our minor hurlers travelled to Limerick to play the Limerick under 17 team before continuing on to Gaelic Park to watch the National League game between Cork and Limerick. The gave a very good account of themselves before going down by 0-7 to 2-4.

There is plenty of activity again this week with the Intermediates away to Valley Rovers in the Tom Creedon Cup. The Junior A Footballers play Kinsale (away) on Saturday and Valley Rovers on Sunday (home) while the Minor Footballers are at home to Brian Dillons on Sunday morning. The Junior B team take a well deserved break.

There was a big Carrigaline representation in the semi-finals of the Scor with a number of our acts going through to the County Final.

Unfortunately John Keohane dislocated his shoulder in the final minutes of the match against Passage. John has been very unlucky with injury in the last two years. Everyone in the club wishes John a speedy recovery.

Junior A Football

The Junior A Footballers scored a great victory over old rivals Shamrocks in the South East Junior Football League. Despite the fact that a number of players were playing their second game of the day Carrig showed great commitment and determination particularly in the second half when they held Shamrocks to one point. Shamrocks lead by 1-4 to 0-4 points at half time but Carrig really upped their performance in the second half. The switch of Paul Holland to centre back was a real turning point and he crowned a man of the match performance by converting a penalty after Daniel Twomey was fouled. A special mention for team manager TJ Cronin who was “flying” and also to Sean Stack, who lined out in goal, and made a superb save in the second half. Maybe there is a new career for Sean between the sticks. Final score Carrigaline 1-9, Shamrocks 1-5.

Team: Sean Stack, Andy O’Keeffe , Brian Irwin, Richard Jenkinson, Colin Foley, Dave O’Riardon, Philip Ahern, Kevin O’Driscoll, Paul Holland, TJ Cronin, John Winters, Stephen Allen, Daniel Twomey, Alan Murphy and Paul Kiernan

Earlier on Sunday morning the juniors were in Passage. Carrig started well with the aid of the breeze and lead at half time by 7 points to 4. Unfortunately we had a player dismissed early on in the game and this had a major bearing on the outcome. Two early goals in the second half put Passage in the driving seat and the ran out winners by 3-8 to 0-8. Everyone on the team wish John Keohane a speedy recovery

Team: Alan Murphy, Andy O’Keeffe , Dave O’Riardon, Richard Jenkinson, Colin Foley, Paul Holland, Ronan Hennessy, Kevin O’Driscoll, Dave Fleming, John Keohane, John Mullany, Stephen Allen, Paul Kelleher, Alan O’Keeffe and Paul Kiernan

Junior B Football

The Carrigaline Junior B football team continued their successful start to the city league with a hard earned victory over Nemo Rangers on a cold windy afternoon in Trabeg. Carrig played with the wind at their backs in the first half and Alan Murphy opened the scoring after two minutes with a well worked point. Carrig continued their good work and points were added from Dave O Brien and Colin Corkery giving Carrig a led of three points to no score after ten minutes. Dave O Brien continued with his impressive start adding two more points before Nemo opened their account on twenty minutes with a point. Carrig notched up two more points through Joe Harte and Barry O Keeffe to leave the score seven points to one at half time. Nemo started the second half using the wind to full advantage and took the game to Carrig with a goal in the eight minute. Nemo then enjoyed the better of the exchanges for the next ten minutes and added three more unanswered points. Carrig regained composure through the impressive Mick Duffy and John Dineen giving the chance to Barry O Keeffe and Anthony Burke to add two well taken points. Nemo added a late point to leave the final score 1 5 to 9 points in Carrigaline’s favour. Dave Walker And Tom Hobbins also impressed in the Carrig defence.

Team: Anthony Burke, Karl Browning, Kieran Staunton, David Walker, Eoin Murphy, Mick Duffy, Tom Hobbins, Colin Corkery, Barry O Keeffe, Dave O Brien, David Moore, Mickey O Sullivan, Joe Harte, John Dineen, Alan Murphy, Frances Reynolds

Under 15 Football, City League
Carrigaline Vs St Finbarrs.

Carrigaline met St Finbarr’s in this very closely contested and entertaining football encounter, at Carrigaline on last Saturday afternoon. It was hard fought, but sportingly contested throughout. St Finbarr’s started brightly with a point in the 1st minute, followed with a 2nd point in the 12th minute and only for some sterling defending in the full backline, the goalpost, and some errant shooting, their concerted spell of pressure could have yielded at least 2 further goals. Having being on the hind foot for the first fifteen minutes, the home team slowly raised their game, their half backs and midfielders going on the offensive at every opportunity, and they were rewarded in the 18th minute, when corner-forward Owen Harrington collected a long ball, rounded his opponent and lobbed the keeper to score a fine goal. There was a further point a piece in the 28th minute, a gem from Niall Coakley’s right foot to a long range effort from the Barrs in the 30th minute.
Carrigaline were very fortunate to be ahead at half-time 1-01 to 0-03.

The home team began the second half in a determined mood, with their full back-line in superb form, their half back line and mid-field linking well and continuing to attack at every opportunity, which resulted in points from half forwards Tony Murphy and David Manley in the 3rd and 6th minutes respectively, to a point from the Barrs in the 8th minute. Carrigaline were now firing on all cyclinders, playing an exciting brand of fast open passing football, which resulted in another green flag, when corner forward Stephen Powers angled shot, dipped under the cross bar in the 15th minute. At this stage, the home team appeared to be in control with a five point lead entering the final stages. The visiting team refused to lie down, and rallied strongly in the last ten minutes, reducing the deficit with a point in the 26th minute, and produced a grand stand finish, when they converted a penalty in the final minutes to leave a point between the teams. Carrigaline hung on for a deserved victory by the narrowest of margins.

Junior B football v Rathpeacon

Friday, February 20th, 2004

The Junior B footballers opened their city league campaign with a fine win over Rathpeacon last weekend. Carrig led from the start with two well-taken points from Colin Corkery.Carrig soon added another from Barry O Keeffe to leave it 3 points to no score. However Carrig did not leave it there and added points through Dave O Brien, T J Cronin, and John Dineen to leave it 6 points to no score at half time. Carrig continued their dominance in the second half with another impressive point from Colin Corkery. John Dineen and Dave O Brien added two more to put the game out of Rathpeacon’s reach. Rathpeacon opened their account ten minutes into the second half with a point, which was to prove the only time the impressive Carrig defence marshalled by Kieran Staunton and Mick Duffy was breached. Michael Kiernan was introduced and pointed from 25 yards with his first touch of the ball.Colin Corkery then finished the move of the match which saw him score a goal after a well measured pass from Joe Harte. There was still time for Carrig to add another goal and a point from the dominant Micky O Sullivan to leave the score line 2 11 to 0 1.

Team: Paul Keohane, Karl Browning, Kieran Staunton, David Walker, Eoin Murphy, Mick Duffy, T J Cronin, Colin Corkery, Barry O Keeffe, Micky O Sullivan, Dave Moore, Dave O Brien, Barry Houlihan, John Dineen, Anthony Burke, Subs, Frances Reynolds, Joe Harte, Michael Kiernan

Tuesday, February 17th, 2004

The weekend gone by was a very busy weekend for the club with four football teams in action as well as the holding of our Annual Dinner Dance in the Carrigaline Court Hotel on Saturday night.

The dinner dance was a resounding success with close to 300 people attending to celebrate last years success. This included reaching the Intermediate Football County Final, winning the South East Junior A Hurling Championship, Junior B Hurling Championship and League, Minor A Hurling League, Under 21 Football Championship and the Cork County Minor Football Non-Exam League.

The biggest reception of the night was reserved for the winner of the Hall of Fame award for 2004, Sean Cooney. Sean O received a standing ovation from all present as he picked up a well deserved award.

Sean has been a member of the club all his life and he continues to play a very active role in particular in the difficult job of fund raising. Sean captained the Junior Hurling team of 1974 which captured the South East title for the first time in over 25 years. The next time we won the title in both 1982 and 1983, Sean was team manager.

The one sad not over the weekend was the unfortunate injury to Evan Wylie, the goalie with the Junior A Football team. Evan picked up an unfortunate leg injury over the weekend and all in the club wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Despite the late night revellary at the dinner dance, the club still fielded 3 teams on Sunday morning. The Junior A team, which had defeated Ballinhassig in the South East League on Saturday, went down to Whites Cross. The Junior B team defeated Rathpeacon and the minors were too good for Bishopstown.

So the season is back up and running and once again with two Junior teams, the minors and possible the intermediates all playing on the same day we need a lot of cooperation from players to help us to fullfill the fixtures which will no doubt be as forthcoming as it was last season.

Junior A Football

The Junior A team had two games over the weekend. On Saturday they had a good win over Ballinhassig on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-4. This, however, was overshadowed by the injury to Evan Wylie picked up two minutes before half time and all the team wish him a speedy recovery.

A quick opening point settled the team and they went on to play a fine brand of free flowing football. Carrig were well on top at midfield with both midfielders covering acres of ground. With a plentiful supply of ball the forwards created and took a lot of their chances which left the half time score Carrigaline 2-9 Ballinhassig 1-0.

Carrig again started well in the second half and continued to add on scores. Ballinhassig upped their game with 15 minutes to go and got more into the game. All in all it was a very satisfactory display with the final score Carrigaline 3-14, Ballinhassig 1-4. Best for Carrig in an excellent all round team performance were Philip Ahern, Mick Duffy, Sean Corkery, Kevin O’Driscoll, John Mullalley , Paul Holland, Padraig O’Driscoll and Rory Barrett.

Team: Evan Wylie, Philip Ahern, Brian Irwin, Andy O’Keeffe, Colin Foley, Mick Duffy, Nathan Wall, Sean Corkery (1-0), Kevin O’Driscoll (0-1), John Mullalley (0-4), Paul Holland (0-7), Padraig O’Driscoll, Rory Barrret (1-1), Alan Murphy (0-1) and John Winters (1-1). Subs Dave Fleming, Ronan Hennessy, Stephen Allen, Anthony Burke and Richard Jenkinson.

We were back in action in the City League on Sunday morning with a game against Whitechurch. Unfortunately a number of players failed to turn up for the game. This is very unfair on manager TJ Cronin who, along with this selectors, is putting a big effort into getting two teams out at the weekend. Players will need to show far more commitment if we are to continue to participate in the City leagues.

Despite a weakened team, there was no shortage of effort. However over elaboration and a failure to put away our chances left the half time score Carrigaline 0-1, White church 0-6.

A more direct approach in the second half yielded two goals including a Pa Burke special but in the end despite some fine performances, Whitechurch ran out winners by 0-11 to 2-2.

Best for Carrigaline were, Colin Foley, Rory Barrett, Sean Corkery, Kevin O’Driscoll, John Winters, Padraig O’Driscoll and Dave Flemming. Well done also to minor player Paul Kiernan who lined out with the team at short notice.

Team: Alan Murphy, TJ Cronin,Andy O’Keeffe, Richard Jenkinson, Colin Foley, Dave Riordan, Rory Barrett, Sean Corkery, Kevin O’Driscoll, John Winters, Padraig O’Driscoll, Stephen Allen, Pa Burke, Dave Flemming and Paul Kiernan.

Minor A Football

The minor A footballers got the season off to a good start with a 2-10 to 1-2 victory over Bishopstown. Carrig started well but found scores difficult to come by and found themselves in arrears 0-2 to 1-1 after 15 minutes. A goal from Alan Jenkinson after good work by Gary Harrington and Wesley O’Brien steadied the ship and further points from O’Brien, Timmy Kenneally and Tony O’Sullivan left the half time score Carrigaline 1-6 Bishopstown 1-1.

With Gary Harrington and Tony O’Sullivan well on top in midfield Carrig were well in control in the second half a feature of which was two points from wing back Peter Donnellan. Well done to Valy Potcovaru who come on in the second half to become the first Romanian to play for the club ! Timmy Kenneally rounded off the scoring when he took advantage of a poor clearance to send the ball to the net.

Team: Shane O’Hanlon, Jason Kidney, Brian Cotter, Colin Twohig, Alan Noonan, Ray Keohane, Peter Donnellan, Gary Harrington, Tony O’Sullivan, Alan Jenkinson, Timmy Kenneally, Hugh Cox, Wesley O’Brien, Cormac Creed-Nolan and Alan Murphy. Subs. Darragh Cotter, John Walsh, Kyle Meehan, Kieran Kelleher, Wesley Roynane and Valy Potocovaru

Carrigaline GAA

Underage Disco

The underage section of Carrigaline GAA/Camogie club are continuing their monthly discos in the GAA hall for all 12–16 year olds. Presently both committees are in the process of introducing a “Disco Membership” card, which will have to be presented to a member of the door staff on entering the disco, a system of no card no entry will operate. Application forms for disco membership cards will be available within the next few weeks, from managers, schools or any club member. This will take a lot of organization, so we will appreciate your co-operation. But our interest is to run an enjoyable and fun disco for this age group, in as safe as possible an environment.
A card will not be necessary for the next disco, which will be held on Saturday, Febuary 21st.
