Carrigaline Claim Feile Victory
Carrigaline 6-12
Cobh 6- 8

On Sunday evening in a sun soaked Ballinlough, the Final of the Cork Feile Hurling, was played in front of a huge crown. Carrigline started brilliantly, with a couple of early scores from Adrian Lynch and also a goal from David O’Regan. Cobh were a very big side and well able to hurl. The Carrig lads with James O’Shea at corner back was outstanding, and on a couple of times during the game he made some very important tackles, none more so than in the last 10 minutes. Michael O’Donovan, at corner back was having his usual game and his puck outs were being well delivered all day. Jason O’Leary took a hard knock in the knee after 10 minutes, but luckily he was able to run it off. Kaelan Spillane and Jason kept the ball moving through the middle of the field all day. Simon O’Brien opened his account with a couple of well taken points, also during this time the Carrig lads were opening up a nice lead on Cobh, as they struggled to come to terms with Carrigaline’s first time hurling. David O’Regan at full forward was leading the way, as Eoin Conway took a pass from David and he buried it to the back of the net. Cian Barry, at wing forward was fouled on a number of occasions and Adrian Lynch punished Cobh everytine. Simon O’Brien opened up the Cobh defence with a great run, that he finished it the back of the net. Daniel Bagnell had to mark a very dangerous full forward, and Brian Dorgan at wing back was coming more and more into the game. David Drake, who moved to wing back on the day, due to the absence of Gary Naughton had a marvellous game, especially in the last 15 minutes, when he put in some huge clearances. Carrigaline led 4-6 to 2-5 at half time.
Carrig were caught napping just after half time, when Cobh scored 2 goals to close the gap to 2 points. Then Carrigaline showed great spirit and team work, to score a great team goal by Simon O’Brien and another point to give Carrig a five point lead. Sean Conlon scored a peach of a goal, when he left the corner forward and riffled a shot off the roof to the net. Cobh then scored another goal to leave them just a goal behind. Stephen Gorman in goal was busy now, with Cobh throwing everything at Carrig. Stephen made a couple of excellent saves in the first half and also in the second. Adrian Lynch scored a bullet of a goal, when he pulled first time on a ground clearance to hit the back of the net. Carrig now had a nice lead, but Cobh again struck for a goal to leave only a puck of a ball in it. The game was on a knife edge for the next few minutes. Then, Cian Barry was fouled and Adrian showed great composure and slotted over the free. The whistle went and Carrigaline had won the feile final. There were great scenes of joy, as everyone celebrated this great victory.
Michael McSweeney presented the cup to David and he thanked everybody for their support and also thanked all the mentors.

CITY FOOTBALL
Carrigaline 0-13
Delaney’a 2- 4

On Wednesday evening last, Carrigaline 1 U12B travelled to take on Delaney’s in the city football league. Delaney’s started well and gained an early lead and were 5 points up, before Carrigaline responded by taking up some points of their own. Alan Cooney, Cian O’Flynn and Stephen O’Mullane were all prominent scorers. Delaney’s scored a second goal to leave them 3 points clear mid way through the second half. But Carrigline responded like they did in the first half with Pauraic Conway, Luke O’Hanlon and Stephen O’Flynn, picking their points to finished with 3 points to spare. Carrigaline 0-13, Delaney’s 2-4.

Junior A Football Championship v Valley Rovers

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

A point from Paul Kelleher in the 32nd minute of the second half gave Carrig a well deserved draw in the second round of the Junior A Football Championship in Minane Bridge last Saturday night. In fact Carrig will be disappointed not to have got a victory as they were the better team on the night helped by an outstanding display by the midfield pairing of Kevin O’Driscoll and Sean Corkery who dominated Valleys two seasoned midfielders.

John Winters opened the scoring with a point in the 5th. minute but Valleys responded with a pointed free two minutes later. The Carrig defence gave away too many frees in the first half and the concession of another fourteen yards on more than one occasion was disappointing with Valley Rovers Eamon McCarthy his usual reliable self from placed balls. This will have to be addressed before the replay.

Paul Kelleher had Carrig back in the lead on the 10th. minute before Valleys had three points in a row, two of which came from frees. John Winters had his second point in the 19th. minute before Valleys restored their two points lead from a free in the 22nd. minute. With O’Driscoll and Corkery lording it in midfield, helped in no small way by the excellent kick outs from goalkeeper Michael Webb, Carrig hit a purple patch with three points in three minutes, two from frees from the Mark Doody either side of a Paul Kelleher point. These opportunites came after some good work by Barry O’Keeffe and Chris Irwin. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration in defence left Valleys in for a goal just before half time to leave the half time score Carrigaline 0-6 Valley Rovers 1-5.

With Andrew O’Keeffe and Richard Jenkinson getting on top of their opponents, the Carrig defence got in top in the second half. But all we had to show for our efforts in the first fifteen minutes of the second half was a point from Mark Doody who made a big impression when moved to half forward. Valleys restored their two point advantage with a point in the fifteenth minute.

Doody had Carrig back on level terms with two pointed frees in the 17th. and 20th minute before Sean Corkery gave us the lead pointing after a great solo run through the middle. This was immediately cancelled by Valleys and they went ahead again with a point on the 26th. minute. The last couple of minutes was played out at real championship pace with David Buckley making a significant impact. But it looked to be to no avail until Paul Kelleher got possesion forty yards from goal and scored a wonderful point to leave the final score Carrigaline 0-11, Valley Rovers 1-8. We are certainly getting value for money with all our games in recent weeks going down to the wire.

Team: Michael Webb, Andrew O’Keeffe, Brian Irwin, Richard Jenkinson, David Riordan, Philip Ahern, David Buckley, Kevin O’Driscoll, Sean Corkery (0-1), Chris Irwin, John Winters (0-2), Gary McGovern, Barry O’Keeffe, Paul Kelleher (0-3), Mark Doody (0-5). Subs used: Tony O’Sullivan and Shane Collins

Carrigaline’s U 12’s and U14’s March into Finals

Last Monday evening proved to be an exciting and entertaining event, with two of our underage teams going through to their respective finals. Our Fe12’s played in the Semi Final of the South East Football and Fe14’s in the Semi Final of the Feile Hurling competition.

Fe 12B South East Semi Final
Carrigaline 3-11
Kinsale 2-6
Carrigaline 1 came out on top in a well contested south east semi final, last Monday, against Kinsale. Two goals by Michael O’Grady in the early stages and points by Robert O’Shea and Richard Aherne, gave Carrigaline the advantage by the interval.
Kinsale started the second half brightly and built on the goal they saved just before the turnabout, when they put 3 points on the board without reply. This stung Carrigaline into action and full forward, Ciaran Malone, made his presence felt with a goal and a point.
As the game entered a crucial period, Carrigaline were indebted to their keepers, as first, Stephen O’Flynn and then Jack Glennon pulled off fantastic saves, that prevented certain goals. Carrigaline then managed to tag on a couple of points with Luke O’Hanlon getting on the scoreboard to ensure that Carrigline 1 took the spoils and booked a place in the South East Final.
Impressive performers on the night for Carrigaline included Killian McSweeney, Michael O’Grady and Chris Allen.
Squad: Stephen O’Flynn, Chris Nughton, Chris Allen, Anthony O’Reilly, Killian Mac Sweeney, Morgan O’Hanlon, Stephen O’Mullane, Robert O’Shea, Richard Aherne, Cian O’Flynn, Luke O’Hanlon, Martin Molloy, Alan Cooney, Ciaran Malone, Michael O’Grady, Pauraic Conway, Thomas Kent, Gary Mahoney, Gary Murphy, Robert Allen, Aidan O’Flynn, Peter Bresnan, Richard Allen, Cian O’Flynn, Stephen Caffery, Darragh Mc Carthy, Alan Cooney, Jack Glennon.
FEILE HURLING SEMI FINAL
Carrigaline 5-11
St. Finbarrs 5-3
On Monday evening all roads out of Carrigaline headed to Ballinlough for the Feile semi-final. Carrigaline started brilliantly and soon settled with a couple of early points. The half back-line of Gary Naughton, Tony O’Connor and Brian Dorgan were excellent, clearing everything that came their way. Stephen Gorman made a couple of very good saves in the first half as well. During the first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half, Carrigaline played the best hurling they have played all year. Eoin Conway battling well again. Cian Barry had a superb game on the wing and also scored a goal, which was well taken. The full back line of Michael O’Donovan, Daniel Bagnell and James O’Shea also did very well on the night. Carriglaine got tired in the last 15 minutes and cracks began to show, as St. Finbarrs scored 4 goals in the last quarter of an hour. Jason O’Leary and Kaelan Spillane in the middle ran themselves into the ground, as did David Drake and Captain, David O’Regan. Adrian Lynch stepped up also for a very well taken goal. Simon O’Brien had one of those nights with a tally of 3-9 (0-4) frees, a lot of his scores came from very good team work.
The final is fixed for next Sunday, against Cobh. Hope to see you all on Sunday for the final.

John Kerins Memorial Tournament
Carrigaline U-11’s travelled the short distance up to Pairc Ui Rinn on Sat. last to take part in J.K.M.Tournament. On a beautiful day they played Eire Og in the first Quarter final and after a close start to the game, the Carrig lads kicked some wonderful scores to reach the semi final with a comfortable win.
In the semi they met Na Piarsaigh and after a ding-dong battle the Carrigaline lads lost out by one point after extra time. The full Carrigaline panel got a chance to play in Pairc Ui Rinn, which was a great experience for the 10 year olds.

Panel: J. O’Keeffe, P.Ahern, J.Kind,, , E.O’Donnell , C. McSweeney,, R O’Shea, K.Kavanagh, D. O’Brien, S.Dwane, E. Moyihan, E O’Donavan, M.Lynch, M.Quinn, K.Conlon, S.Ahern , B.Curran, D.O’Sullivan, M.Intrye , M. Curtain, K. Kavanagh, C.Gould, I.slike C.Diggins.

FÉ 13 City Hurling
Carrigaline 1-5
Glen Rovers 3-6
Carrigaline’s under 13’s has their second outing last Thursday, against The Glen in the Fé 13 City Hurling. From the start theour lads were in trouble. The Glen were very strong in the centre of the field and dominated the opening 15 minutes. As well as their centre field, their centre back was causing us a lot of trouble. We started to play for the last 10 minutes of the second half, but somehow, didn’t look convincing. We went in half time 1-1 to 2-4 down. Despite a poor performance, we were still only two pucks of a ball behind.
Carrigline lifted their game in the second half and started to play the type of hurling they were capable of playing. Kaelan Spillane put over three successive points and after Eoin Brennan converted our fourth, our lads looked like they could come back. However, the Glen began to take control again and played some tremendous hurling and extended their lead further with some great scores. The Glen ran out eventual winners with the scoreline 1-5 to 3-6.
Oisin Finn and Michael O’Donovan played great hurling in the backline, while Cian Barry, David Drake and Kaelan Spillane were outstanding up front.

Well done to Kaelan Spillane on his excellent performance with the Cork Schools team that beat Kerry in Páirc UÍ Chaoimh last Sunday.

Team:
S.Gorman, M.Dwane, S.Mellett, C.Sisk, M.O’Reilly, M.O’Donovan, S.O’Halloran, S.Conlon, C.Barry, D.Drake, W.Bruton, E.Brennan, D.O’Keeffe, K.Spillane, O.Finn, D.Spillane, R.McCarthy, E.Callanan, R.Duggan, S.Timmins, I.O’Halloran, S.O’Donovan.

IFC v Glanmire

Intermediate Football Championship v Glanmire

After the heartbreak defeat to Nemo in the first round it appeared that lightening could strike twice when Glanmire goaled in the fourth minute of injury time to leave the minimum between the teams. However the team showed great composure and the outstanding Ken O’Keeffe popped over two points to give us a deserved victory 2-8 to 1-8.

It should not have been so difficult in the end. Carrig dominated the first eight minutes with Nicholas Murphy and Eoin Barry on top in midfield and Ken O’Keeffe and Eoin Murphy picking up everything in the half forward line. However, during this period we had five wides and it was Glanmire who opened the scoring with a point in the 8th minute.

Eoin Murphy had Carrigs opening point a minute later and Eoin O’Sullivan added another to leave Carrig ahead by 2 points to 1 after ten minutes. Carrig proceeded to lose their way over the next ten minutes and Glanmire took full advantage with four unanswered points to leave the score Carrigaline 0-2 Glanmire 0-5 after twenty one minutes. The moving of Geoff Dillon to centre back stemmed the flow through the centre and a point in the 24th minute from Ken O’Keefe signaled a Carrig revival before Peter Muprhy put his stamp on the game.

On top of his game there are few better full forwards in the County and he showed his finishing ability when he got on the end of a marvellous move involving Nicholas Murphy, Ken O’Keeffe and Ollie Conlon to billow the net for a goal in the 25th minute. Peter added a point two minutes later and he was at the end of another move involving Alan O’Keeffe and Ollie Conlon to goal from five yards out to leave Carrig in what appeared to be a comfortable position at half time leading 2-4 to 0-5.

The start of the second half was similar to the first with Carrig with a lot of possession but again failing to take our chances and Glanmire had the opening two scores to cut the margin to a goal after ten minutes. Eoin Murphy pointed in the twelfth minute and it could have been so much better but for an outstanding save by the Glanmire goalkeeper from a shot from Ken O’Keeffe. Peter Murphy followed up an Eoin O’Sullivan delivery to fist a point in the 19th. minute.

Carrig were lucky three minutes later when Kieran Blake blocked down a certain goal from which Glanmire pointed the resultant 45. With the game well into injury time it looked like Glanmire were unlikely to pierce the solid Carrig fulll back line but a rare mistake handed Glanmire a goal and the Carrig following were suddenly feeling very nervous. The Carrig defence handled the pressure well with Ger Cooney, Tom Burke, Nicholas Murphy and Peter Murphy (who had been moved to midfield) carrying the ball out of defense which resulted in Ken O’Keefee kicking over two very good points from the left wing and the referees whistle finally blew eight minutes into injury time much to the relief of the Carrig supporters. Having been deprived in the last minute against Nemo and the Glen in resent weeks it was a relief to have pulled through.

There is certainly the ability within this team to go further but we will need to be more prolific in front of goal if we are to better last years performance and go the whole way.

Team: Mathew O’Sullivan, Killian Forbes, Neally Hayes, Kieran Blake, Geoff Dillon, Tom Burke, Ger Cooney, Nicholas Murphy Eoin Barry, Ken O’Keeffe (0-3), Eoin Murphy (0-2), Eoin O’Sullivan (0-1), Ollie Conlon, Peter Murphy (2-2) and Alan O’Keeffe. Subs Used Paul Holland (blood) and John Mullaney

SOUTH EAST FE 16 FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINAL
Carrigaline under 16 footballers played Ballinhassig in the final of the Southeast league in Brinny, last Wednesday night. In the opening half, Ballinhassig played with a very strong wind and had the first score in the 3rd minute, a point from a free. Carrig’s first score did not come until the 10th minute, a deflection off a Ballinhassig defender. We had a goal from Paul Campbell in the 12th minute. Then, with five minutes to halftime, a goal for the opposition left us trailing again by two points. A point from Stephen Griffin put just a point between the sides at halftime, on a score line of 1-3 to 1-4.
It was expected that Carrigaline would up the tempo somewhat in the second half when playing with the wind, but Ballinhassig had a dream start, when they were awarded a penalty in the very first minute. To make matters worse, Carrig lost their midfielder, Stephen O’Regan through injury. Craig Neville and Stephen Griffin had the next two points. Carrig were awarded a penalty in the 12th minute, which was saved by the Ballinhassig keeper. But the Carrig lads never gave up and points from Stephen Corcoran and Paul Campbell levelled the game going into the last quarter. A point from Craig Neville gave Carrig the lead for the first time in the game. It was every second score from that to the end, and a point in the second minute of injury time by Craig gave us a two-point victory.
This was an exciting game from a scoring point of view, but at times Carrigaline struggled. But it has to be noted that more than half of the team had played a school match in the afternoon, and tired legs were evident.
Final score: Carrigaline 1-12, Ballinhassig 2-7.
Scorers: P. Campbell 1-1, Craig Neville 0-4, S. Griffin 0-3, S. Corcoran 0-2, and P. and T. Murphy 0-1.
Team: P. Donnellan, G. Kiely, C. Hurley, J. McCarthy, P. Ronayne, M. Cuddihy, J. Moran, E. O’Sullivan, S. O’Regan, P. Campbell, C. Neville, T. Murphy, S. Corcoran, K. Manley, S. Griffin, N. Coakley and I.Ward.

City League Matches
Fe 12

Carrigaline 2 (6-8) V Passage (1-1)
Carrigaline 2 continued their winning ways in the U-12 city league with a comprehensive victory over a “never say die” Passage team. The Carrig lads started the game with the wind at their backs and were 8 points ahead after 20 minutes. They played very controlled football in the second half against a stiff breeze and took some good scores with all of the forwards getting on the score sheet.
Panel: J. O’Keeffe, P.Ahern, J.Kind, E.O’Donnell, C.McSweeney, A.O’Reilly, R O’Shea, K.Kavanagh, D.O’Brien, S.Dwane, E. Moyihan, E O’Donavan, M.Lynch, M.Quinn, K.Conlon, S.Ahern C.Cremin, ,C.Diggins, B.Curran, D.O’Sullivan, M.Intrye ,RossDrummond.
Again, this Carrigaline 2 team played against Delaney’s last Saturday with some fine football. After some early misses they found their shooting range and accuracy and kept knocking over some great points to win the game comfortably.
Fe 12B
Carrigaline 1 took on Passage on home turf last Friday night in the city league. Carrigaline started well and found the net 3 times, with well taken goals by Thomas Kent and Gary Murphy. Passage scored 5 points to eat into Carrig’s lead in the first half and were rewarded with well worked scores. Luke O’Hanlon, Gary Murphy and Stephen O’Flynn all goaled in the second period. The goal remained the difference between the two sides at the end, as it finished up on a scoreline of Carrigaline 6-6 to Passage 0-6.
South East League Matches
Fe 15 Hurling
The U15’s were in action on home ground against Ballincollig on Saturday, and had an easy victory. The home side were in control in most sectors, with Daragh Coughlan and Conor Hurley dominating at full forward and centre back respectively. With a plentiful supply of ball from midfielders, Robert Foley and captain, Mark Williamson, the Carrig forwards had a field day, particularly wing forward, Tony Murphy, who scored at will and full forward, Brendan Cashman, who worked very hard throughout.
Team: Michael O’Sullivan, Jamie O’Sullivan, Daragh Coughlan, Brian Giltenan, Andrew O’Sullivan, Conor Hurley, Kevin Ahern, Robert Foley, Mark Willianson, Tony Murphy, Niall Coakley. Eoin Harrigton, Cian O’Sullivan, Brendan Cashman, Kevin Buckley, James O’Reilly.
Fe 14 Football
Carrigaline v Courcey Rovers

Last week, Carrigaline played Coursey Rovers in the south east league. Carrig played some excellent football throughout the game and won well on the night. Brian Dorgan scored a peach of a point in the first half. Mark O’Mahony also scored a bullet of a goal. James Crowley and Adrian Lynch also put some scores on the board. On the night Gary Naughton and Eoin Conway gave a fine performance.
Fe 12 South-East Football
Carrigaline 2 (3-7)
Valley Rovers (4-14)

The Valley lads had too much power, and they eventually pulled away and overcame a determined Carrigaline 2 side, in a fine game of football in the south east league. The younger Carrig lads put it up to Valleys for much of the game. Mid way through the second half Carrig only trailed by 5 points, but a big surprise was on the cards, as in the final quarter, the Innishannon lads added a further 1-2 without a reply to run out comfortable winners.
Panel: J. O’Keeffe, P.Ahern, J.Kind, D.O’Brien, S.Dwane, E O’Donavan, M.Lynch, M.Quinn, K.Conlon, S.Ahern, E.Moynihan, C.Cremin, C.Gould,, B.Curran, I.Slike, D.O’Sullivan, M.Intrye, S.Brophy, C.O’Reilly, E.O’Donnell
Fe 12B1
St. Finbarr’s were the visitors to Carrigaline, on Sunday morning last, in the south east. Carrigaline had the best of the exchanges all over the pitch and ran out comfortable winners in the end.
Fe 12B1
The final league match of the league stage of the South East was played on Monday evening, between Carrigaline 1 and Valley Rovers. It proved to be a dramatic encounter and could have gone either way at the end. Valley Rovers were quickest to settle down into the game and scored 2-2 before Emer Ali goaled for Carrigaline, with a delightful finish. Ali and Ciaran Malone also scored goals in the first half. These scores kept the Carrig players in touch, as Valley’s through some expert finishing, went in 12 points up at half time.
Carrigaline came out in the second half determined to fight back and they did just that, with a brainstorming performance. Chris Allen was increasingly influential in his position. Cian O’Flynn, Robert O’Shea and Martin Molloy all helped turn the game in Carrigaline’s direction, in a fantastic team effort. Luke O’Hanlon’s 2 goals and Robert O’Shea’s well taken scores put the game back in the fire. Valley’s held on under pressure and Carrig couldn’t bridge the gap, as the referee blew his whistle on an entertaining match, with Valley’s winning by 2 points.
Fe 14 HURLING FEILE
Carrigaline v Kilbrittain

On Wednesday night last, Carrigaline travelled to Kilbrittain and came away with a comprehensive win. This game was won in the first half, when Carrig played against a gale force wind and at half time, Simon O’Brien had scored 3 goals and Kaelane Spillane scored a goal. With the aid of a gale in the second half, Cian Barry at full forward, scored 3-1. Kilbrittain were a good side and it took Carrig awhile to settle in the first half, but when they did, Carrig played some impressive hurling.
FE 14 HURLING FEILE
Carrigaline v Killeagh/Ita’s

Again, this team played Killeagh / Ita’s in the quarter final of the feile in Carrigaline, last Sunday evening. There was great support for Carrigaline on the day. They started well, but Killeagh / Itas were able to put it up to them. Carrigaline dominated the first half, leading 3-6 to 0-6 at half time. Carrig had a good start to the second half, but the lads had to show their worth, when Killeagh closed the gap to a goal. Carrig never lost their composure, and the players dug deep, with Michael O’Donovan and Gary Naughton in the backline, Jason O’Leary and Simon O’Brien in the middle, David Drake and Adrian Lynch in the full forward line, all working hard. Mark O’Mahony, also made his presence felt at full forward. Kaelan Spillane, Cian Barry and Simon O’Brien rattled the net. David Drake popped up in the end making reality certain with a goal. This team now go on to play the semi finals next week end.

IHC v Glen Rovers; JHC v Ballinhassig

Tuesday, May 11th, 2004

Intermediate Hurling

After going so close in the first game the replay was a major disappointment as the team failed to come anywhere near their performance in the first game. Once again we gave away a goal in the first minute and where struggling to get back into the game from this. Brendan Hogan opened Carrigs account in the 3rd minute. The Glen had a free in the 6th minutes but points from Brendan O’Driscoll and Michael O’ Sullivan left the minimum between the teams after 13 minutes. The Glen took over for the rest of the first half and put five points on the score board before a pointed 65 from Brendan O’Driscoll left the half time score Glen Rovers 1-6 Carrigaline 0-4.

Carrig opned the second half much brighter with points from Brendan O’Driscoll (free) and Kevin O’Driscoll in the first four minutes. However we were to score only one more point, a Brendan Hogan free for the rest of the game with the Glen getting two points to leave the final score Glen Rovers 1-8 Carrigaline 0-7. Carrig face Milford in the “back door” round in Ballyclough on Friday 28th. May.

Junior Hurling

The Junior hurlers were defeated by Ballinhassig in the junior championship despite a spirited first half performance, however the lack of fitness of a number of players in key positions saw the team run out of steam in the second half despite the best efforts of goal keeper Brian Irwin, Evan O’Sullivan, Sean Corkery and Dave Fleming. Final score Balinhassig 4-15, Carrigaline 1-7

Team: Brian Irwin, Ger Dooley, John Dineen, Gavin Fitzgerald, Evan Wylie, Kevin Curran, Richard Jenkinson, Eoin Barry, Nathan Wall (0-1), Peter Murphy (0-1), Sean Corkery, Anthony Burke (1-5), Alan Muprhy, Dave Fleming and Barry O’Keeffe. Subs Used: Greg Lynch, Karl Browning and Colin Campbell

Carrigaline1 3-8
White’s Cross 2-1

Last Friday, Carrigaline1 played White’s Cross in the City football league. They finished comfortable winners in the end, but it took them a while to get going. For some reason Carrigaline started the game in a sloppy fashion, making many unforced errors. In a low scoring match, the teams went in at level pegging at the break.

Carrigaline came out with their “A” game in the second half and soon put a flurry of scores on the board. Pauraic Conway, Luke O’Hanlon and Cian O’Flynn all found the net. Some fine points were scored by Chris Allen, Jack Glennon, Gary O’Mahony and Richard Aherne. Others to impress on the night were Martin Molloy, Ciaran Malone and Chris Naughton.

Fe 12B Football
Carrigaline 4-7
Mayfield 3-2

Last Saturday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon, Carrigaline1 took on Mayfield at the City venue . The conditions were perfect for football and both teams produced an entertaining contest that was enjoyed by all. Mayfield started the scoring with a well taken goal, that gave our goalkeeper no chance. Carrigaline responded in the best way possible by playing positive flowing football and putting scores on the board. Pauraic Conway, Alan Cooney, Thomas Kent and Luke O’Hanlon all scored goals in the first half. Carrigline also tagged on 4 points to leave them in a commanding position at the break, on a score line of 4-4 to 1-0.
Mayfield came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and really put it up to Carrigaline with a scoring run of their own. Carrigaline lifted their game in response, and only a fantastic save from the Mayfield’s keeper prevented Carrig from finding the net. Cian O’Flynn and Chris Allen impressed with their stylish play. Morgan and Luke O’Hanlon showed commitment and determination, when it was most needed, with Luke taking many fine scores. Peter Bresnan stuck to his task admirably also and Carrigaline won out in the end with a score line of 4-7 to 3-2.

FÉ 13 City Hurling
Carrigaline 4-3 Na Piarsaigh 7-3

Carrigaline’s under 13’s had their first outing last Wednesday, against Na Piarsaigh in the Fé 13 City Hurling. A trip to Na Piarsaigh always promises to be a tough encounter and this was no exception. The conditions, while windy, were very good and the sun shone throughout making it difficult at times for the players to see the sliothar approaching. Na Piarsaigh opened with a flurry and took early control of the game with 3 well taken scores, 2 goals and a point. However, the Carrigaline lads were up to the task and once they started to play as a team they converted the next 4 scores. Kaelan Spillane scored 1-1 and Wayne Bruton and Oisin Finn added goals of their own. Our lads were playing some great flowing hurling. Just on half time, Na Piarsaigh scored an easy goal and the sides came in level at half time.
The second half began with Na Piarsaigh scoring 1-1 in quick succession. They looked unstoppable. However, the Carrig lads were fighting hard to come back, and after Dyalan O’Keeffe scored a point and Wayne Bruton rattled the Na Piarsaigh net for his second goal, the game was on. Oisin Finn added a marvellous point for Carrigaline and our lads looked like they were back on track. Then against the run of play, Na Piarsaigh scored another easy goal and for some reason our lads heads dropped. Na Piarsaigh took advantage of this lull in the Carrigaline play to add another 2 goals and run out eventual winners by 7-3 to 4-3. This was a great display by our lads for their first outing in the year.

FÉ 14B South East Football
Carrigaline(2) 2-5 Kinsale 1-15

Carrigaline’s Fé 14B footballers played Kinsale in the South East league last Friday. Our lads started the game very promisingly and were playing some fine football. However, Kinsale were very strong, particularly at centre back and mid-field and began to dominate proceedings. At half time the game seemed over with the score line 1-7 to
0-1 for Kinsale. Despite the score line, our young team were playing some magnificent passing football, but were failing with the final pass in front of goal.
The second half saw a mighty spirited performance from this team. Goals by David Drake and Eoin Brennan and points by Stephen Gorman, Wayne Bruton, Shane O’Halloran and Eoin Brennan saw Carrigaline win the second half by 2 points, but overall they lost the game by 7 points.
Oisin Finn played a real captain’s part with an outstanding display of football at full back. He was ably assisted by Eric Callanan and Shane O’Halloran. Ian O’Halloran in goal was a real gem. David Spillane at centre back gave an awesome display of football, while Dylan O’Keeffe and Eoin Brennan played their best football this year in the second half. All of the other players were outstanding and gave their most gutsy performance this year, while playing some magnificent football as well.
Team:
I.O’Halloran, M.Dwane, O.Finn, S.O’Halloran, E.Callanan, D.Spillane, L.O’Regan, S.Conlon, W.Bruton, D.O’Keeffe, D.Drake, S.O’Gorman, E.Brennan, P.McGrath, R.Duggan.

Fe 12B South East
Carrigaline 1 played Kinsale in a keenly contested South-East football match, on Monday last. Carrigaline built up a 4 point lead towards the end of the first half, caught by a late Kinsale goal. Robert O’Shea and Alan Cooney grabbed 2 a piece, with Cian O’Flynn and Luke O’Hanlon, also getting on the scoreboard. The half time score of 0-6 to 1-2 didn’t reflect fully the Carrigaline possession in the first half.
Carrigaline opened the second half with 3 unanswered points, but allowed Kinsale back into it with another goal. The Owenabue side had to dig deep to respond, but weren’t found wanting with Robert O’Shea again coming up trumps, finding some fine scores, ably assisted by Cian O’Flynn, Alan Cooney and Chris Allen. Content to take the scores as they came, Carrigaline managed to put a chink of daylight between themselves and Kinsale, who battled hard to the end. The final score of 0-14 to 2-2 made the Carrig lads work for their victory.
Squad: Stephen O’Flynn, Chris Naughton, Ciaran Malone, Anthony O’Reilly, Chris Allen, Morgan O’Hanlon, Killian McSweeney, Robert O’Shea, Richard Allen, Alan Cooney, Luke O’’Hanlon, Cian O’Flynn, Michael O’Grady, Thomas Kent, Stephen O’Mullane, Diarmuid Hickey, Paudraic Conway, Stephen Caffery, Cormac Conway, Robert Allen, Martin Molloy, Jack Glannon, Peter Bresnan, Gary O’Mahony.

There’s only One Cork Boy !! (For those of little Faith)

Thursday, May 6th, 2004

A couple of people in work who I have a lot of respect for expressed some concerns about the readiness of the Cork hurlers this year. ‘God we have nothing, the lads aren’t playing as a unit, Joe Deane has lost all form, Timmy is very sluggish, we have no forwards, midfield is still a huge problem, where will we play Diarmuid, we have no free taker’

My dear friends relax; enjoy the next few weeks and the long evenings. Immerse yourself in all things Cork and feel good.

Have a stroll down the Mardyke, have a wander up to Shandon, even ring the bells if you want to .

Have a lovely ramble down the Lee fields with the dogs and have a quart in The Anglers Rest. Then drive down to Cloyne for a spin and say a few prayers at Rings statue.

Drive to Allihies in West Cork some day, one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It’ll change your life.

Maybe pop into Moks pub on Bandon Rd some night and have a pint with Jimmy Barry Murphy. Just sit there, you don’t have to say anything, he’ll know that you know. Then run across to Lennox’s for a cheese and onion pie and chips with peas and curry

Start saying ‘me dazza’ , and start asking for a glass of ‘raasa’ in your local

Go to a road bowling match out in Blackpool, then walk back into town around 3pm, hopefully it’ll pour rain. Grab a breast in a bun in HillBillies if you get the munchies, then head to the Hi B for a lash of pints until you get thrown out for reading the paper ?

Head into the English market on the way home Go to the old meat counters; buy some offal, a couple of half heads, some liver, heart and kidneys. Make sure you pick up a nice bit of hake and conger from O’Connells fish stall.

Buy a couple of stale skull loafs while you’re there and stroll out of town, you’ll pass where Henry’s once stood, up Barrack St, pass The Enterprise and out Bandon Rd. Pop into ‘Gallies’ for a few cans and The Echo and head over to The Lough.

Be sure to bring your walkman, (not your discman ya
snob) and play The
Stargazers, Gallagher, the Franks and Sultans while you feed bread to the swans.

Hopefully there’ll be soft sweet rain falling, the kind of rain you only get in Cork on summer evenings and on the Friday before big hurling matches. Drift off into a beautiful dream, a dream of balmy Sundays in Thurles, singing De Banks with friends, family and loved ones ?

When you wake up, get your ‘mam’ to collect you and make you tea and toast at home while you dry your jeans, monkey hat and parka jacket in front of the fire and talk all night about music and nights out and savage drinking sessions and old games and the games to come.

You’ll make a few calls to the lads on Saturday about arranging a lift and who’s bringing the sambos and tinnies. You’ll be nervous Saturday night so you’ll get hammered and travel to the game next day with a cruel hangover - nothing worse, nothing better.

You know Sunday will be sunny, they always are in Thurles and you’ll meet people you went to school with outside The County Bar and haven’t seen for 15 years and they’ll look the very same. You’ll meet some really quiet guy in work who you never knew was into Cork and he’ll be demented drunk with an old Barry’s Tea jersey on him. Some of them will be nervous but the real Cork ‘heads’ expect to win, and win ‘handy like’, even against overwhelming odds

Some will say, ‘era we haven’t a chance this year. The papers are laughing at us; we have no forwards or midfield, we chocked last year.’

But you know we have something, something indefinable.

You remember what JBM told you that night in Moks in
May:

‘You can never write us off. We are beautiful. We will be there when all the others are long gone, we are forever baby, we are Cork..’

Great Second Half Performance Earns Draw for Intermediate Hurlers

Carrigaline Intermediate hurlers put in a great second half display to gain a draw with Glen Rovers in the first round of the championship in Minane Bridge last Monday. In fact if not for a highly contentious refereeing decision we would have been celebrating a winning debut to the intermediate grade. With the game four minutes into injury time a long range free for the Glen landed in front of the Carrig goal. An effort for the equaliser went wide of the posts and was waved wide by the umpire. However the referee overruled his umpire and awarded a 65 which was converted. This wasn’t only officiating problem as a point scored by the Glen in the opening half was clearly wide. In close games these decisions make a big difference.

Carrig played with the wind in the first half but were very slow to settle and the Glen were a goal and a point to the good before Nicholas Murphy opened Carrigs account with a point in the sixth minute. This was followed immediately by a point from Michael O’Sullivan. Nicholas added a third point in the 13th. Minute.

In the 21st. minute the Glen were awarded a point which as previously stated was well wide. Immediately from the puck out, Peter Murphy was fouled in the square and Carrig were awarded a penalty. Brendan Hogan’s shot was well saved by the Glen goalkeeper but Brendan made amends almost immediately when pointing a free from well out on the right.

The Glen pointed a free in the 26th. Minute but this was cancelled out by a point from Philip Ahern after receiving a pass from the outstanding Cian O’Mahony. Carrig finished the stronger with points from Peter Murphy and Brendan Hogan (free) to leave the half time score Carrigaline 0-7 Glen Rovers 1-3.

A one point lead playing into a strong wind put Carrig in a precarious position at half time and this was further exacerbated when the Glen were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute which they duly dispatched to the net. The Glen controlled the next ten minutes but tenacious tackling by the Carrig defence where Ger Hoey and Jimmy Murphy were outstanding, and some bad misses kept the margin at 0-7 to 2-3.

Carrig got a great boost when Ger Cooney pointed from midfield to cut the deficit to one point. Ger had been moved to midfield and this was a telling move as he proceeded to play the proverbial blinder dominating the midfield for the closing twenty minutes. And what a final twenty minutes with scores coming thick and fast. In the 13th. Minute a point for the Glen. 14th minute Nicholas Murphy found the net with a great flick and we were back in front 1-8 to 2-4. 15th minute a point for the Glen. 16th minute a pointed free from Brendan O’Driscoll. 17th and 18th minutes pointed free for the Glen putting them back in front. 19th minute a pointed free from Brendan Hogan cancelled out one minute later. 21st and 22nd minutes two fine points from Brendan O’Driscoll followed by a point from Michael O’Sullivan and Carrig were two points to the good 1-13 to 2-8.

The game ended in a welter of excitement with the Glen getting a point back in the 28th minute. Just when it appeared that we had weathered the storm and achieved a notable victory the referee intervened and awarded the 65 to the Glen to tie the game at 1-13 to 2-10.

The replay is fixed for next Friday in Minane at 7.30. the Junior Hurlers play Ballinhassig in Shanbally on Saturday at 7.30 and the Intermediate Footballers play Glanmire in Church Road the following Friday at 7.30. So a very busy couple of weeks ahead.

Feile na nGael
Carrigaline 4-7
Fr O’Neills 1-5

Last Monday evening, Carrigaline Fe 14’s played Fr. O’Neills in the second round of the hurling Feile competition, on the home ground. Carrigaline had a great start with a goal from Simon O’Brien. Fr O’Neills were a strong team and Carrig took some time to get to grips with them. On the night the Carrigaline backs were excellent, with Gary Naughton, Tony O’Connor and Brian Dorgan in the half back line. Michael O’Donovan, Daniel Bagnell and James O’Shea had to be on their toes with Fr O’Neill’s looking for a goal. Stephen Gorman denied them on a couple of occasions mid-way through the second half, with a string of superb saves. Adrian Lynch, finished off a great move with a well taken goal shortly before half-time, when the move started right back in the full back line and involved Michael O’Donovan, Gary Naughton, Eoin Conway, David O’Regan and then Adrian Lynch. Simon O’Brien got in for a second goal just on half-time to leave the score 3-4 to 1-2 in favour of Carrigaline.
Carrigaline began the second half well again and scored the first point. David O’Regan scored two points also. Cian Barry and Sean Conlon contributed very well on the night. Kaelan Spillane topped off a fine night with a goal of his own that was well struck. Mark O’Mahony and Shane Noonan also performed well when they came on, as did Cathel O’Herlihy and Brian Twomey. This team will be heading to the quarter final next week end, date yet to be arranged.

Carrigaline 2 (4-6) V Kinsale (6-12)
On a very wet evening, Carrigaline 2 put in a very creditable performance against a stronger Kinsale team. The Carrig lads were under pressure from the start, but great displays from Philip Ahern and Eoin O’Donnell and some good goalkeeping, kept Carrig in contention up to half time. Some early scores in the second half for Kinsale put the game out of reach for Carrigaline, but they kept playing to the end to score a very total of 4-6.

Carrigaline continued their good form in the U 13A football, with a good win over undefeated St. Finbarr’s, last Saturday evening. A cool and casual goal from Dylan O’Keeffe, and a score of 1-5 from Kaelen Spillane, paved the way for Carrigaline’s victory. Best for Carrig were Sean Mellett in goal, Eric Calnan and impressive Wayne Bruton.

Fe 14 South East Football League
Valley Rovers 2-5
Carrigaline 1-7
Last Tuesday, Carrigline Fe 14’s were unlucky to lose to Valleys in Brinny, on a very wet evening. Valleys scored from the last kick of the game to win by a point.
