The reporter then asked, ‘But would you not suppot England when Ireland are not in the competition?’
The man replied ‘Jaysus no way’.
Reporter: ‘Why not?’
Man: ‘800 years of opression!!’
Reporter: ‘Is there ever any time you would support England?’
Man: ‘If they were playing Kerry!!!’

The reporter handed back to the studio with a puzzled look on his face. He just didn’t seem to get it

Intermediate Hurling Championship v Milford

The Intermediate Hurlers are into the quarter final of the championship after a well deserved victory over Milford in Ballyclough last Tuesday night. Despite the dreadful weather conditions during the day which saw torrential rain lasting up to half time, the standard of hurling was quite good on a pitch that held up well despite the conditions.

As on the first occasion, Milford settled the quicker and had two points on the board from a free and a 65 by the 4th minute. Two fine efforts from Brendan Hogan in the 8th and 9th minute settled Carrig nerves and Nicholas Murphy gave us a lead that we were never to lose when he pointed two minutes later.

Already down a number of players for various reasons, Carrig suffered a further blow when full forward, Dave Fleming limped off injured to be replaced by 16 year old Stephen Corcoran. Brian Irwin, who was very impressive through out, pointed in the 13th minute for a two point lead and Nicholas Murphy (who had been moved to full forward) got the vital goal in the 18th minute when he contested a long delivery from Ger Cooney and finished the ball to the net. A Brendan Hogan free on the 20th minute put six points between the teams.

The Carrig defence was outstanding through out with Philip Ahern belying his years to play the proverbial blinder covering acres of ground through out the game. Kevin O’Driscoll was also a dominant figure at centre back with minor player Gary Harrington very solid at wing back.

Milford were given a life line when they breached the rock solid Carrig full back line in the 27th minute for a goal to leave the half time score Carrigaline 1-5 Milford 1-2.

Thankfully the rain abated for the second half but it was Milford who again opened the brighter with a point in the 2nd minute. Brendan O’Driscoll restored the three point advantage with a pointed free in the 5th minute but Milford were clearly getting on top in particularly in the half back line. They reduced the lead to two points again in the 10th minute.

Carrig selectors moved Nicholas Murphy to centre forward and this combined with committed play of Ger Cooney and Peter Murphy (senior !!!) in midfield turned the tide again. Brendan O’Driscoll again stretched the lead to three points from a free in the 15th minute followed by a point from Michael O’Sullivan in the 17th minute. Milford replied immediately, but with the Murphy brothers and Cooney dominating the puck outs Carrig began to tighten their grip on the game with points from Brendan O’Driscoll (2) and Ger Cooney to put six points between the teams with 3 minutes remaining. A Milford free in the 28th minute was converted but Brian Irwin had the last word with a fine effort to leave the final score Carrigaline 1-12 Milford 1-6 and sets up a quarter final encounter with Valley Rovers.

This was a much improved performance on the last encounter with Eoin O’Sullivan very solid in goal in difficult conditions. The six backs were well on top and midfield was also very effective with Peter Murphy snr (Peter Murphy jnr (no relation) was introduced as a blood sub, thus the need to distinguish the still young Peter Murphy as the senior man). The forwards took their scores well but as a unit they will have to pick up the work rate for the quarter final.

Team: Eoin O’Sullivan, Ger Hoey, Jimmy Murphy, Cian O’Mahony, Gary Harrington, Kevin O’Driscoll, Philip Ahern, Peter Murphy, Ger Cooney (0-1), Michael O’Sullivan (0-1), Nicholas Murphy (1-1) Brendan O’Driscoll (0-4), Brian Irwin (0-2), Dave Fleming, Brendan Hogan (0-3). Subs Stephen Corcoran and Peter Murphy jnr (blood sub)

The underage section of the club have a busy week ahead, as the U 14 Feile team head to Mullingar, to take part in the Feile Na nGael All Ireland Hurling Competition, starting next Thursday, June 24th. Best of luck lads!
This U14 team gave a fantastic display of hurling last Friday evening, in their home ground against Bishopstown. The skills and the training they have done in preparation for the Feile, was present in this match, and they ran out winners on the night.
U 13 City Hurling
Carrigaline’s U13’s played against Blarney, in the city league hurling last Thursday. This was a hard fought contest, with some good hurling from both teams. For Carrig, Shane O Halloran, scored 2 goals and Kaelen Spillane put in a powerful display at centre back, leaving the final score, Carrigaline 3-6 to Blarney 3-4.
Again, this U13 team put in a good performance, overcoming Sarsfield by 2-2 to 0-6 last Saturday morning. Kaelen Spillane gave a fine exhibition of hurling at centre back, while Sean Timmons, Cian Sisk and Eric Callnan showed good defending skills.
U 12 South East Hurling League.
Carrigaline 2 (2-5)
St.Finbarrs (2-3)

In what was a very competitive game, Carrigaline 2 came out on top by two points after a good fight back in the second half. With P.Ahern, J.Buckley , Kevin Conlon and M.McIntrye strong in the defence, they kept Carrig in touch with the Barr’s at the break with the score of 1-3 to 1-0. D. O’Sullivan, who had a great game throughout in midfield, upped the pace in the second half and set up a well taken point by the ever improving C.Diggins. M.Curtain, A.Lynch, S.Brophy and B.Curran all hurled well to the end and helped Carrig to the two point win, which they deserved on the day.

Carrigaline 1 hosted Douglas 2 on Saturday morning last in a keenly contested affair. The game was nick and tuck for the most part, as both teams enjoyed periods of dominance. Carrigline scored an important goal to put them 2 points up midway through the second half. Douglas managed to reply with 3 points of their own in a rapid response. Douglas went on to score some well taken frees to close out the match on a scoreline of Douglas 2-5, Carrigaline 2-2. Carrigaline can be happy with their performance, with Chris Allen, Luke and Morgan O’Hanlon amongst those playing well. Alan Cooney also deserves special mention for his barnstorming performance.
Team: P. Conway, D. McCarthy, C. Malone, P. Bresnan, D. Hickey, S. Caffrey, G. Mahony, L O’ Hanlon, C. Allen, C. Naughton, M. O’Hanlon, A. Cooney, S.O’Mullane, A. Ali, S.O’Flynn, T. McSweeney, M. Mulloy.

This Carrigaline1 team travelled to Douglas last Monday night, to take on a highly fancied Douglas team in a hard fought encounter. Douglas lads were better and stronger than the Carrig outfit in most areas, but were made to work for everything they got, by a spirited Carrigaline display. Amir Ali, was outstanding in goal, making many fantastic saves when under pressure, S. O’Flynn, P. Bresnan and C. Malone impressed for Carrigaline, but every one stuck to their task well. Douglas ran out comfortable winners.

Fe 12 Hurling
On Wednesday last, Valley Rovers were the visitors to Carrigaline in a South East Hurling clash. Carrigaline fought hard throughout the game and really put it up to Valleys. The half time score didn’t accurately display the amount of possession Carrigaline won.
Carrigaline moved up another gear after the break with a committed, determined performance. Luke and Morgan O’Hanlon were prominent throughout taking their scores well. Pauraic Conway took his goal confidently. C. O’Flynn, C. Malone hurled well and all the team played their part. Unfortunately Carrigaline lost out by a point in the end on a score line of 2-3 to 1-5, but their performance deserved better.

Blackrock 4-0

We played Blackrock last Saturday in our 5th outing in the city hurling league.
The game was played with fierce determination. The hurling was fast and tough. Carrigaline started well with a superb goal from Liam O’Regan and Kaelan Spillane quickly followed up with a well taken point. Blackrock repled with a goal of their own. It was end to end stuff for the remaining part of the first half. Cian Barry, Sean Conlon, Cian Sisk and Kaelan Spillane were playing out of their skins. Cian Barry ran through and rattled the blackrock net for a super goal with 5 minutes to half time. Sean Conlon added an outstanding individual point to leave the score at half time : Carrigaline 2-2 to Blackrock 1-0.
As expected, “the rockies” came out fighting in the second half and were coming in droves at the Carrigaline defense. They were rewarded with a well taken goal. It was all to play for. For the next ten minutes there was no score but the hurling was outstanding for this age group. Michael O’Donovan at full back was holding it together for Carrigaline. They were throwing everything at him but each time he rose to the challenge and cleared the ball up the field. Kaelan Spillane had moved to centre back and Cian Barry to mid-field and both were the playing outstanding hurling. Wayne Bruton, and Liam O’Regan were tenacious in the attack for Carrigaline and never gave up. Oisin Finn continued to send in some great balls to the full forward line. Carrigaline were rewarded with a goal from Sean Masterson. Cian Barry added a great point from a free. Then a plethora of scores came. Fe 12 South East Semi Final
Carrigaline (1) 1- 8
Vallley Rovers 3-8

Last Wednesday, on a perfect evening for football, Carrigaline contested Valley Rovers in the South East Football Semi Final. Tracton provided the venue, for what turned out to be a keenly contested encounter. Valley’s were the first to get a score on the board, but then Carrigaline took control with Robert O’Shea and Alan Cooney prominent and free scoring. Carrigaline raced into a 4 point lead, but the game turned again after Carrig missed goal chances. Valley’s took a late opportunity with a poacher’s goal of their own. The Carrig boys could consider themselves unlucky to be a point down at the break.
Carrigaline scored the opening point of the second half, but then Valley’s gained a stranglehold on the final, which Carrigaline, try as they might, could not shake off. Even the impressive Stephen O’Flynn, who had a faultless game couldn’t prevent Valley’s scoring 2 goals at vital times. Valley’s second goal came soon after Carrigaline goaled with a fabulous effort through the determined Martin O Molloy. Valleys seemed to get the breaks of the loose balls on the day and held out against everything Carrigaline threw at them. Carrrig fought till the end, but Valley’s won the day playing well in every department. Carrigaline can console themselves with a shot at the B County, and can be proud of their efforts in the South East Football Final.
Squad: S. O’Flynn, C. Naughton, M. O’Hanlon, A. O’Reilly, C. MacSweeney, C. Allen, S.O’Mullane, R. Aheren, R. O’Shea, C.O’Flynn, M. Molloy, A. Cooney, M. Malone, M.O’Grady, A. Ali, T. Kent, P. Fe 12 B County Football
Carrigaline 5-8
Sean Clarach 2-7

Sean Clarachs were the visitors to Carrigaline in the quarter final of the B County Football, last Saturday afternoon. The Avondhu side started well scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes. Carrigaline worked themselves back into the match with powerful play from Robert O’Shea, who goaled twice, and also Michael O’Grady finding the net in fine fashion. The game remained tight however, the half time scoreline reading Carrigaline 3-2 Sean Clarach 1-5.
Carriglaine found the net twice early in the second half, although Sean Clarachs scored one of their own. However, as the half wore on, Carrig started to play more flowing football and began to score fine points. Cian O’Flynn, Luke O’Hanlon and Stephen Caffrey all managed to find points and Carrigaline pulled away to win with a bit to spare.
Team:C. Malone, C. Naughton, C. Allen, A. O’Reilly,D. Hickey, M.O’Hanlon, C. MacSweeney, R. Aherne, C. O’Flynn, A. Cooney, L. O’Hanlon, R. O’Shea, S.O’Mullane, P. Conway, M.O’Grady, G. Murphy, D. McCarthy, A. O’Flynn, G. Mahony, A. Ali, T. Kent, T. MacSweeney.

U12C South East Hurling League
Courceys Rovers 3-5
Carrigaline 3-7

On a damp evening in Ballinspittle in a compelling game, Carrigaline won a marvellous game of hurling, which was in doubt up to the final whistle. The Carrig lads started slowly with Courceys first to the ball and within a short period were finding their range, and were 2-3 to 0-1 up, before a pile driver of a free from 30metres was sent to the roof of the net by Carrig’s Robert O’Shea. Courceys responded well with two more scores, to lead at the break 3-4 to 1-1.
Nine points down and a number of changes were made at the break. Kevin Kavanagh was given a man-marking job to do on Courceys, which he did brilliantly all through the second half. With Carrigaline now up to the pace of the game, they started to take some good points from Cillian MacSweeney, Dylan O’Brien and Eoin Moyihnan, and when Michael Lynch goaled, it was game on with a single point between the sides, the score 3-5 to 2-7. Carrig fought hard for ever ball and came under great pressure from the home side, but some great defending saw them break up field, where Eoin Moyihnan found himself unmarked and his goal bound shot found the corner of the net to the great joy to the travelling Carrigaline support. The final whistle blew a short time later to give the Carrigaline youngsters a 2 point winning margin, but credit must be given to both teams who brightened up with their commitment and effort a miserable and humid evening.

Intermediate Hurling Championship v Milford

Ballyclough was last chance saloon for both Carrigaline and Milford last Friday evening. Despite the long journey a large crowd gathered to support the team. However it looked ominous at the outset as Milford raced into a three point lead after only two minutes. Carrig settled after this and points from Kevin and Brendan O’Driscoll left the minimum between the teams after 5 minutes. With the half back line of Geoff Dillon, Paul Foster and Cian O’Mahony in total control and Ger Cooney and Philip Ahern picking up everything in midfield Carrig completely took over everywhere except on the score board. From the 5th to the 17th minute we had eight wides and these almost proved to be disastrous.

Brendan Hogan finally leveled the scores in the 17th minute, but Milford were back in the lead a minute later. A pointed free from Brendan O’Driscoll and a Philip Ahern point had us in the lead for the first time in the 22nd minute. A brave performance from Nicholas Murphy who though clearly carrying an injury battled on bravely and pointed in the 23 minute after a trademark catch. Milford had the last say of the first half, to leave the half time score Carrigaline 0-6 Milford 0-5.

Two Brendan Hogan frees in the first two minutes put three points between the teams but we were not to score again until the twentieth minute by which time Milford had again leveled matters. Nicholas Murphy scored another great point in the 20th minute.

Carrig introduced sixteen year old Stephen Corcoran and he certainly livened up the forward line. However it was Milford who restored parity with a point in the 24th minute. The prompting of Stephen Corcoran earned a couple of frees but again we failed to convert. With the game in injury time a melee erupted on the Milford sideline (which was completely out of character with the way the game had been played) and while this was going on Milford pointed. When order was restored 34 minutes had elapsed on the clock. It was fitting that Eoin O’Sullivans puck out was aimed at Ger Cooney who was outstanding on the night. Ger grabbed the puck, out burst through and set up Brendan O’Driscoll who made no mistake and put the ball over the bar and leave the final score Carrigaline 0-10 Milford 0-10.

With the six backs outstanding again as they were in both games against the Glen, we are hopeful that a better return up front could see us in to the third round after the replay which will probably take place the weekend of the 20th. June.

Team: Eoin O’Sullivan, Ger Hoey, Jimmy Murphy, Andy O’Keeffe, Cian O’Mahony, Paul Foster, Geoff Dillon, Kevin O’Driscoll (0-1), Ger Cooney, Michael O’Sullivan, Brendan O’Driscoll (0-3), Philip Ahern (0-1), Peter Murphy, Nicholas Murphy (0-2) and Brendan Hogan (0-3).
