Fe15 City Footbhall League
On Saturday last, Carrigaline Fe15’s played Balllinhassig in the city league in Carrigaline. The home team started very well with Simon O’Brien causing huge problems everytime he moved forward from mid-field. Tony O’Connor was also rock solid in the middle of the field. Ballinhassig came close on a number of occasions, but for the brilliant James O’Shea and Shane Noonan, Carrig could have had a different game on their hands. Jason O’Leary took a lot of ball forward all through the game. Eoin Conway at full forward also broke a lot of ball for the corner forwards, who could have had scored. This was a great team effort and the side are improving with every game.

FÉ 13 Footballers win City League Final

Carrigaline 2-11 St. Nicholas 1-8 The 2004 FÉ 13 City league football final was played in St. Annes last Saturday. The conditions on the day were atrocious with gale force cold winds. St. Nicks played with the wind in the first half and opened the game with some fine points from play. Our defence held up well, but were assisted by the blustery winds as St. Nicks missed a number of scorable chances. Sean Mellet, in goal for Carrig, was outstanding and on a number of occasions pulled off some magnificent saves. If our defence were uncharacteristically under pressure, our midfielders and forwards were in outstanding form. The wind didn’t matter to them, as they played some superb team passing football and when Kaelan Spillane pointed a free, our lads took off. They put their heads down and attacked St. Nicks goal time after time. They were rewarded with an outstanding point from Richard Duggan from a very acute angle and a hard fought goal by Sean Conlon, who was just back from a long injury. Our full forwards Dylan O’Keeffe (Capt), Oisin Finn and Richard Duggan were firing on all cylinders and constantly hassled St. Nicks full back line. St. Nicks took back control and added some great points of their own and a well taken goal by their half forward. Before half time Wayne Bruton added a classic point following a great team move, which started from a great piece of defensive play by David Spillane. Oisin Finn was rewarded for his efforts with a cracker of goal before half time, to leave the score at half time as
Carrig 2-3 to St. Nicks 1-7.

It was all to play for. We trailed St. Nicks by the narrowest of margins and we had the wind at our backs in the second half. The lads were fired up, but knew that it wasn’t going to be easy as all our games against St. Nicks were close and tough.

We opened the second half like greyhounds out of a trap with barrage of attacks on St. Nicks goal. Again our midfielders Kaelan Spillane and Wayne Bruton were on fire and continued to feed some excellent ball to our on-song half forward trio of Sean Conlon, Liam O’Regan and Stephen Gorman. This trio worked tirelessly for the second half and between them converted 4 points in the second half. The other 4 points in the second half were scored by Kaelan Spillane, Dylan O’Keeffe and Oisin Finn (2). Even though St. Nicks came close on a number of occasions, the Carrig lads proved too strong for them on the day. Carrig ran out winners in the end by
2-11 to 1-8.

Well done lads on winning this hard fought City League Final. It was truly a team effort on the day and throughout the season. Unfortunately not everyone got the chance to play in the final, but every single player in the squad played their part in helping Carrig achieve this success. Thanks Michael for playing on the day even though you were feeling sick - your presence was an inspiration to all the lads. Thanks also to David for coming along on the day but who couldn’t play due to having tonsillitis – you know you clearly played a huge part in ensuring that the team got to the final. Well done to all the lads, their manager, coaches and selectors.

Congratulations to Dylan O’Keeffe as Captain of the team, who led his team-mates to a great victory and played a true Captain’s role in doing so. It was great to see Sean Conlon return from injury to put in a man of the match performance on the day.

Finally, a special word of thanks to the lads from St. Nicks. Every time we have played you this year, in both football and hurling, it has been a tight and tough encounter. It was never easy but it was always sporting and I’d say we have probably shared the successes equally to date. May we long continue to play great sporting games together where the ultimate winner is the game of Football or Hurling.

Team Squad:
S.Mellett, C.Sisk, M.O’Donovan, M.Dwane, D.Spillane, C.Barry, E.Callanan , W.Bruton, K.Spillane, S.Gorman, L.O’Regan, S.Conlon, D.O’Keeffe, O.Finn, R.Duggan, D.Drake, S.O’Halloran, E.Kavanagh, M.O’Reilly, E.Horgan, N.Creed Nolan, C.O’Mahony and E.Brennan.

Fe15 City Football
Carrigaline 6-5
Mayfield 1-9

On Saturday last the Fe15’s started the city league with a home match against Mayfield. This was definitely a game of two halves. Mayfield started playing with the wind and played very well indeed. They took some great scores during the first half. In added time in the fist half they led 1-7 to 0-3. Carrigaline got a goal on the stroke of half-time to leave Mayfield leading 1-7 to 1-3.
Carrigaline started the second half with two quick goals and this seemed to knock Mayfield out of their tracks. Mark Canty, Adrian Lynch and Kevin Kidney played very well on the day in the forward line. Gearoid Harrington and Shane Noonan were rock solid in the back line. Jonathan Bermingham also had to take the kick outs off the ground and he was excellent on the day.

GREAT WEEKEND FOR CARRIG FOOTBALLERS

BY Nathan Wall PRO

Last weekend saw the busiest weekend for the club so far with the Intermediate footballers, Junior A and B footballers, and both Minor football and hurling fielding teams. The Intermediates played Galtee Gaels of Limerick in their first game of the Munster Intermediate league, the Junior A footballers played local rivals Tracton in their opening encounter of the south east league. The Junior 2 City team played away to Crosshaven and had an easy victory and our Junior 3 City team “the KILLER B’s” made it 3 wins out of 3 by beating Nemo Rangers by a single point. The Minor A footballers also travelled away on Sunday and played Brian Dillions and lastly the Minor hurling team played Douglas in a friendly and were narrowly beaten. On Sunday March the 6th the U21 football team play Courcey Rovers in their opening game of the south east championship in Carrigaline, Time TBA.

MUNSTER INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL LEAGUE:
On Saturday the Intermediate footballers travelled to Kilbhenny Co. Limerick to play Galtee Gaels in their first match of this campaign. The minute the ref threw the ball in the Carrig midfield pairing of Eoin De Barra and Dave Fleming were well on top. With the assistance of a strong wintry breeze Carrig got their first score from the booth of half forward Kevin o’Driscoll. Carrigalines defence on the day was very strong with Brian Irwin solid at full back and from his clearance Carrig went on the attack and Paul Holland kicked Carrigs 2nd point in the 5th minute. De Barra and Fleming opened up the Carrig Attack and perfect pass from Eoin Murphy to Ken o’Keefe and O’Keefe had no problems in putting the ball into the net making it 1-2 to nil after 8th mins. At this point of the match the home team woke up and put a lot of pressure on the Carrig defence and opened their account on the 10th minute with a well taken point and soon after made it 2 points. Carrig began to pass poorly and Galtee Gaels couldn’t put a higher score on the board. Carrig began to regain their feet again and with some fine work by o’Driscoll. O’Keefe had his kicking booths on and put another point on the Carrig score. Straight from the kick out De Barra caught the ball and from his attack Peter Murphy made it 1-4 to 0-2 for the visiting team. The home team managed to get their 3rd point from a free but it was Carrig who dominated this half and with some great work by the forwards Murphy managed to get his second point to leave 5 points between the teams at half time. At the start of the 2nd half it was the home team who took control and should have took their chances but failed to do so. On the 5th minute a great block down by half back Eoin o’Sulllivan led to a Carrig attack, Peter Murphy solo ran from the 45 meter line and his shot rattled the back of the net and a O’Keefe point straight from the kick out gave the scoreline 2-6 to 0-3. As Carrig put the pressure on the Gaels defence Carrig got another point and would have had more but for some good last minute challenges from the home team. This upped their performance and they took control of the game and kicked 3 unanswered points. The Carrig team held out well and with Eoin de Barra, Peter Murphy, Ken o Keefe, Brian Irwin and Dave Fleming playing well no team was going to beat them. Carrig scored 3 more points by Murphy, Keefe and a 45 from the booth of Fleming. A good performance from the whole team on the day and carrig won 2-10 to Gaels 0-9.
TEAM: M Webb, K Forbes, B Irwin, C Lynch, E O’Sullivan, J Dillon, G Harrington, E De Barra, D Fleming, K O’Driscoll, Eoin Murphy, E O’Keefe, K O’Keefe, Peter Murphy, P Holland. Subs used: J Mullaney for E O’Keefe, T Burke for C Lynch and M O’Sullivan for P Holland.

MINOR ‘A’ CITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
On Sunday last our Minor ‘a’ footballers travelled to play Dillions in the City league. This was the teams 3rd game in the league and were still seeking their 1st win, however this was not to be Carrigs day. From the throw in the home team had a great start and were 1-2 ahead after 5 minutes. The Carrig lads started to settle and soon were taking the game to their opponents but found it very hard to get scores. At half time we were 2 goals down but still had hope of victory. The 2nd half was the same as the first. The carrig team showed some great spirit and rallied again but were denied on four occasions by the woodwork and the Dillions Goalie. This was a tremendous performance by an understrength carrig team and great credit is due to then all. Well done to Paul Campbell who scored all carrigs 7 points. Final score Carrigaline 0-7 Brian Dillions 4-7.

JUNIOR ‘A’ SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The Junior team had their first game of the south east league at home last Sunday. A great Carrig performance all round gave them their first victory. Cian Irwin got Carrigs 1st point of a very low scoring first half, followed by two points from Aussie, and a great goal by newcomer Cormac Crid Nolan. The Carrig defence were outstanding in the first half and Tracton could only score 3 points. Score at half time was Carrig 1-3 Tracton 0-3. In the 2nd half Tracton began to take control of the match and soon led by 0-7 points to Carrigs 1-3. Carrig soon began to come back into the match and were helped by old veteran Philip Ahern. Sean Corkery and Aussie two more points for Carrig and another goal from Crid Nolan make it 2-7. Tracton managed to score another point but carrig held out for a great victory. It was also good for the team to see the return of goalkeeper Tony Harris from injury. Best for carrig on the day were Gary Harrington, Philip Ahern, Paul Holland, Cormac Crid Nolan and Eoin O’Sullivan.

KILLER B’s ON FIRE

On Sunday 13th the club had three teams playing n the city league and all games were played at home. The junior 2 team playing Passage in their first game of the year, the junior 3 team playing Na Phairsigh and the minor a football team playing Douglas. The next couple of weeks will see a lot of our main teams playing alot of matches and the Intermediate footballers kick off their Munster league games and also the U21 football team playing Courcey Rovers in their opening game of the U21 Championship, which is fixed for the 6th of March.

JUNIOR 2 CITY LEAGUE V’s PASSAGE

The first game of the day kicked off with the junior team playing Passage on the main field. Carrig played against a very strong wind in the first half, which resulted in Passage starting off the better team in the opening few minutes. The Carrig defence handled the pressure well and with full back Andy O Keffee and half back Gary Harrington on top form. Carrig got their first score of the game on the 14th minute with a superb goal by corner forward Barry O Keffee. Passage found it very hard to break down a solid defence and as Carrig moved up the pitch Barry O Keffee had a good chance well blocked down. Carrig got their second score on the 22nd minute with a pointed free from Barry O Keffee, O Keffee scored another goal on the 24th minute and was assisted by good passing work by his fellow team members. Passage registered their first point on the 28th minute. Some of Carrigs’ passing plays worked very well on the day and Carrig scored another goal from the boot of John Winters. O Keffee scored another point by superbly fisting the ball through the air. But some way-ward kicking through some strong wind Carrig could have been further ahead. At half time the score was Carrig 3-3 Passage 0-1.
Carrig started the second half well and immediately Barry O Keffee got Carrigs seventh score of the game. Carrig were always going to be dominating in this half. Michael O Sullivan added 2 further points to the score and an Eoin O Sullivan free made it 3-7 to 0-1 with ten minutes to go. The Passage men piled on the pressure and scored two fine points. Daniel Twomey added salt to wound for the Passage men with a well-taken goal. Paul Holland scored 4 points for Carrig without reply and when the man in the middle blew the final whistle the Passage team must have been happy he had. The final score was Carrigaline 4-12 Passage 0-3. Best on the day were Barry o Keffee, Andy o Keffee, Micheal o Sullivan and Eoin o Sullivan.

JUNIOR 3 CITY LEAGUE V’s NA PHIARSIGH

The 2nd match of the day saw the KILLER B’s play Na Phiarsigh in their second city league match. Phiarsigh started the game with the aid of the gale force wind and scored their first point on the 5th minute. Colin Corkery who was outstanding in midfield scored Carrigs 1st point with a well taken free against the wind. The conditions during this game were very poor and the strong wind didn’t help the quality of football during the opening half. In the first 15 minutes the Carrig defence were under a lot of pressure but with the old veterans of the team Kieran Staunton and TJ Cronin outstanding in the full back line. At the other end of the pitch Joe Harte had his effort well saved by Phiarsigh goalkeeper. Barry Houlihan rattled the crossbar when Joe Harte flicked a good pass onto Houlihan. Corkery made it 2 points to 1 with another pointed free. Poor passing by the Carrigaline players had gifted Na Phiarsigh to make it level but they failed to do so. Joe Harte made it 3 points to 1 and his fellow teammates worked very hard to get this point. At this stage of the match Phiarsigh began to hit their opponents very hard. At half time Carrig led by 2 points.
At the start of the 2nd half John Roberts broke down a Na Phiarsigh attack and from this the ball went down to Alan Murphy who kicked his first point of the game. Phiarsigh yet again had a good spell for 10 minutes but found it very hard to break the strong defence in front of them. Another point for Carrig set them 4 points clear. The Northsiders had a great chance to put a point between the teams but a great save by Carrig goalie Eoin Murphy kept his team spirits high. Dave o Brien scored another point for Carrig and to make things worse for the visitors they had a man sent of for dangerous play. But against the run of play and in the dying minutes of the match Phiarsigh scored a goal to put only two points between them. Immediately Dave o brien scored a fine point for Carrig and added another to make it 8-4. In the final few minutes of the match the visitors piled the pressure on but carrig held out to make it 2 out of 2. Best on the day were Kieran Staunton, TJ Cronin, Colin Corkery, Richard Jenkinson and Mick Quinn. Final score was Carrigaline 0-8 Na Phiarsigh 1-1.
