KILLER ‘B’s GIVE CARRIG 1ST TROPHY OF THE YEAR
By Nathan Wall PRO CARRIGALINE GAA CLUB

On Monday 28th March the Un 21 ‘B’ footballer team played Ballymartle in the South East Final in Shanbally, Carrig looked like they were going to win easily, but a Ballymartle come back in the final ten minutes of a highly entertaining game denied Carrig an easy victory. Early on Sunday morning the Intermediate Hurlers played Blackrock in the O’Murchu Cup and won after a very hard fought match. At the same time the Minor ‘A’ footballers played Ballinhassig in the City/ South East League and made it 2 wins out of 2 after a very though game. Next Saturday Night sees our Un 21 ‘A’ team play Ballygarvan in the Semi Final of the South East, Your support would be very appreciated for the lads. The Race Night will be held in the club on Fri April 1st @ 2030 in the club and a great night is guaranteed.
UN 21 ‘B’ SOUTH EAST FINAL:
On Monday morning the under 21 B team played Ballymartle in the South East Football Final in Shanbally. Carrig started the first few minutes stronger, and got the opening score after a Wesley O’ Brian point in the 1st minute. Soon after this Ballymartle made it a point apiece after some fine work by their forward line. A ballymartle pointed free on the 5th minute gave the Riverstick side the lead. Eoin O’Sullivan was dominant in midfield and a foul on him gave Cormac Crid Nolan the chance to make it all level and he done this with ease. Soon after this Carrig went another point ahead after some great work by Barry Houlihan but this point was set up after a great pass from O’Sullivan. Carrig were breaking down the ballymartle defence well and after a break from play, Craig Neville saw the ball fall neatly into his hands and from this Carrig got their first goal of the game. After this score Ballymartle put pressure on the Carrig side and the Riverstick side had a fine chance of goal superbly blocked down by Ossie. Another pointed free from Ossie made it Carrig 1-4 to Ballymartle’s 0-2 after 15mins of the first half. Carrig’s defence were put under savage pressure and were highly led by the experienced John Roberts and Rory Barrett in defence. Another Ballymartle free made it 1-4 to 0-3. Soon after this point Cormac Crid Nolan had the chance of another Carrig goal but his effort went over went over the bar. Carig were well on top after this and Neville got Carrig’s 2nd Goal after some fine work by Barry Houlihan. Towards the end of half time Neville couldn’t believe his luck when he was faced with a one on one situation with the keeper but his fine effort rattled off the crossbar and went over for a point to leave the score Carrig 2-6 Ballymartle 0-3. The 2nd half was a total reverse of the first with Ballmartle dominating this half. The Riverstick team got their first score of the 2nd half with a pointed free. The Carrig side were beginning to struggle in this half but Neville put another score on the board for Carrig. Soon after this carrig settled well and were finding their routine. Barry Houlihan got Carrig’s 3rd goal and he deserved this after his fine hard working display through the match. Ballymartle’s heads began to fall and they were committing a lot of fouls which Carrig punished them for. The Carrig defence were then put under a lot of pressure by Ballymartle and were denied yet another goal after a great block down by Peter Roynane. Carrig got another 2 points in the match but this is where the game changed. Ballymartle found spirit inside themselves and were not giving up without a fight. They scored 2-6 in the final quarter to pile the pressure on Carrig, but with the Cool, Calm and Collective John Roberts wouldn’t leave Carrig loose this one. Ballymartle put it up to the Carrig team in the final Quarter but couldn’t win this match. Carrig won by 2 points in the end with the scoreline reading Carrig 3-8 to Ballymartle 2-9.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Carrig recorded their first points in the O’Murchu Cup with a well deserved win over Blackrock in Church Road on Easter Sunday. Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half Carrig were into their stride early on and got some good scores from Stephen Corcoran and Gary Harrington. Birdie increased the lead with two points and then Ger Cooney consolidated Carrig’s lead with a goal and a point to leave Carrig ahead 1-6 to 0-4 at the break. Carrigaline started the brighter again of the 2nd half with John Keohane and Kevin O’ Driscoll controlling midfield. The forwars were finding the goal quiet easily and were 3 goals up at the quarter stage. However Blackrock were not going to give up at this stage and got a goal and 3 points in a 10 min spell to make the game harder for Carrig. Carrig finished the stronger side to finish out deserving winners. Best for Carrig was Goalie Brian Irwin, Paul Foster, Brendan O’Driscoll, Gary Harrington and Ger Cooney who got 2 –3 from play.
MINOR ‘A’ FOOTBALL:
On Sunday last our Minor ‘A’ footballers won their 2nd league match. The game against Ballinhassig was played in Carrigaline and was a great contest from start to finish. Carrig started well and were 2 scores ahead thank to Stephen Griffin, however Ballinhassig rallied and were soon to take a 3 point lead. A well taken goal from Stephen Griffin and another Shane Barry point gave Carrig the lead that they were never going to lose during the match. Playing with the elements in the 2nd half Carrig started well but made to work hard for every score by a determined Ballinhassig side. Two points each from Deady and Griffin, coupled with goals from Valy Potcavaru, Paul Campbell and the excellent Stephen Griffin ensured Carrig were not going to be denied this victory.

UNDERAGE REPORT MARCH 21ST

Monday, March 28th, 2005

Fe14 Feile Football
A performance of near perfection was how Carrigaline overcame Mallow in Feile Peil last Sunday evening. A powerful display from the backs driven by Michael O’Donovan and the mid-field play of Wayne Bruton and Kaelan Spillane were in super form. The speed and skill of the forwards was too much for Mallow to handle with Oisin Finn having a brilliant game. Final score: 4-5 to 0-3.

U12B South-East.
Carrigaline v Kinsale

This young Carrigaline team put on a great display of point scoring on a fine Sunday morning last. Inside the first couple of minutes they found the back of the net with a low strike from Robert O’Shea. They then kicked 6 points without reply with an effort from Ian Silke the pick of them. Carrigaline controlled the middle of the field with Stephen Dwane putting in a solid display. The Carrigaline goal wasn’t tested throughout mainly due to good displays from Anthony O’Reilly,Cillian McSweeney and newcomer David Drinan. Two further points from K.Kavanagh put the Carrig lads 2-10 to 0-5pts up at the break. The Carrig lads continued the second half at great pace and kicked some marvelous points from long range and both sides of the pitch. Robert O’Shea for the second week running scored an impressive 1-10. This was a good team performance ending with high scores and sets them well on the way to semi-final spot in this year’s South-East U-12 competition.
Next game for Carrigaline 1 is away to St.Michaels in the City League on Saturday next at 1.45pm.
Team: J. O’Keeffe, A. O’Reilly, M. Quinn, P. Ahern, M. O’Grady, S. Dwane, E. O’Donnell. C.McSweeney, K. Kavanagh, E.Moynihan, E.O’Donovan, D.O’Brien, C.Cremin, M.Lynch, R.O’Shea, K.Conlon. J.Kind.

U12C South East Football
Carrigaline 0-01 Douglas2 2-14
The Carrigaline U12 team playing in the South East U12C Football competition had their second outing last Friday evening against a very strong Douglas2 side.
From the start it was obvious this would be a difficult game for Carrigaline. Douglas began in a determined manner and dominated mid field. This placed the Carrigaline backs under constant pressure. Despite this Carrigaline managed to limit the Douglas attack to points until late in the half, when Darragh in the Carrigaline goal was finally beaten. After dealing very well with anything that came his way earlier, he could do nothing about this goal. Half time score was Douglas 2-10 to no score.
At half time a number of positional changes were made and a more determined Carrigaline team came out. mid-field and forwards were getting more possession and working better together. However when they did, the Douglas backs were quick to close them down. Despite this they did force the Douglas goalkeeper into two good saves and had a ball come back off the crossbar and go wide.
The defence was more solid and limited the Douglas attacks. However, Carrigaline could not eat into Douglas’ first half lead, even though the Carrig lads showed a huge improvement in this half. Again, another committed performance by this improving Carrigaline team.
Information on next match will be given at training.

U12C South East Football
Carrigaline 3 were in action against St Finbarr’s last Saturday morning. Despite a slow start where the Barrs scored first, once the Carrigaline lads settled they began to dominate from mid field and led well by half time.
In the second half they continued to score well and ran out winners of a very competitive match. This was a much improved performance after the recent loss in the first round.
U12 City Football
Carrigaline 2 played away to St Vincent’s last Saturday morning in the city football league. Both teams put in a great effort, but the Carrig lads ran out the winners on a score of 3-8 to 1-4.
U13 City Football
The U13’s played at home last Saturday against Canovee in the city football league. The visiting team proved the stronger side on the day. This team will play against Douglas next Saturday.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR CARRIG HURLER’S

BY NATHAN WALL PRO

On St. Patrick’s Day the Junior hurler’s and Intermediate hurlers had their first league games of the year. The Intermediates were away to local rivals Ballymartle in the O’Murchu Cup and the Junior hurlers played Kinsale in the South East League in Carrigaline, both teams were beaten by stronger opponents and the fact that both games were on at the same time didn’t help the performance of the both teams. On Sunday 20th the Premier Minor Hurlers played Sars in their first competitive game and came off with an outstanding victory, both the Minor hurlers and footballers should be proud of themselves with their victories in the Premier grade and lets hope this continues long into the year. On Sunday evening the Junior footballers played Ballymartle in very bad weather conditions in Riverstick and yet again had another good victory, which was needed as the lads are due to play Tracton on April 12th in the South East Championship. The Annual Race Night will take place in the club pavilion on April 1st, this is one of the major fundraisers for the club and all your support will be needed, a good night is assured and anyone wishing to purchase a horse can do so by contacting any committee member.

JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Last Thursday the Junior and Intermediate hurlers played Kinsale and Ballymartle. The Junior team playing at home and the Intermediates playing away to Ballymartle. A very young Junior team was beaten by a stronger Kinsale side and if the Intermediate wasn’t fixed for the same time the lads would have put up a better performance. The Intermediates had the same problem with a lot of their lads missing. Ballymartle and Kinsale were both stronger on the day but it was a good workout for the lads on the day.
PREMIER MINOR HURLING LEAGUE:
On Sunday afternoon the Minor team played Sars in the Premier Minor league in carrigaline in good conditions. Carrig started very well and were moving the sliothar well and putting the scores up on the board. Wesley O’ Brian was instrumental in this Carrig victory and was well assisted by Stephen Corcoran who scored 1-8 on the day. At half time Carrig led 1-7 to Sars 0-4. In the 2nd half Carrig were put under a lot of pressure from the Sars team who played the 2nd half with a strong wind but the Carrig full back line kept them at bay. Carrig managed to score 1-4 in the 2nd half while Sars managed 2-4. This was a great sporting game of hurling from both sides and the visiting team tried their best to break down the Carrig back line but on the day Carrig held out for a brilliant victory for the club on the scoreline of Carrig 2-11 Sars 2-8.
TEAM: M Webb, K Kelleher, J Walsh, J Kidney, J Moran, R Keohane, C Touhy, W O’Brian, P Roynane, C Neville, M Cuddihy, T Murphy, P Campbell, S O’Regan, S Corcoran. SUBS USED: A Noonan for K Kelleher.
SCORERS: Stephen Corcoran 1- 8 (4 from frees), Craig Neville 1-1, Stephen O’Regan 0-1, Tony Murphy 0-1.
JUNIOR ‘A’ SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE:
On Sunday evening our Junior footballers played Ballymartle in the football league. The game was played in terrible conditions with a constant downpour throughout the game. Ballymartle settled early and had the better of the early exchanges playing with the elements. Playing the better football they led 1-3 – 0-2 after the first quarter. Carrig soon settled into their game and with Cian O’Mahony, Andy O’Keeffe and the ever young Philip Ahern leading from the back line, Carrig started to reduce the lead. With a better supply of ball the Carrig forwards put more pressure on the Home side and with John Winters, Danny Twomey and the impressive Barry O’Keeffe now outplaying their markers Carrig went in at half time 2 points down. 1-5 – 1-3. Carrig raised their game in the 2nd half and totally dominated most of the exchanges and soon coasted into the lead. The experience of Sean Corkery at center back ensured that Ballymartle rarely troubled Tony Harris’s goal and Ronan Hennessy and Elliot O’Keeffe dominating at center field Carrig looked well. However all was not rosy up front with Carrig as some wayward kicking kept the scoreline down and this has to be a worry for the selectors. The game ended on the scoreline 3-7 to 1-6 and a good win for a very young Carrig side.

NOTICES:
Membership is now due from all players and mentors and must be payed before 31st March 2005. Race Night on in club pavilion on April 1st and anyone interested in purchasing a horse can contact any committee member.

UNDERAGE REPORT MARCH 13TH

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

U12B South-East Football
Carrigaline 1 (5-18) V Ballinhassig (3-4).

In this first round match Carrigaline proved too strong for a never say die Ballinhassig team. Carrigaline with some great inter play throughout the field were quick into their stride and scored 4 points without reply. Then, Ballinhassig replied with a goal, but this spurred on the Carrig lads again and had notched up a total of 1-12 at the break to lead by nine points. With all forwards getting on the score board they kept up the pressure in the second half to run out comfortable winners. Their next outing in the South East will be next Sunday morning, when they play Kinsale away at 11am. Meet in the club at 10am sharp.
Team: J. O’Keeffe, A. O’Reilly, M. Quinn, P. Ahern, M. O’Grady, S. Dwane, E. O’Donnell. C.McSweeney, K. Kavanagh, E.Moynihan,E.O’Donovan, D.O’Brien, C.Cremin, M.Lynch, R.O’Shea, K.Conlon. J.Kind.

Fe12C South East Football league
Carigaline 1-5 Ballygarvan 3-5

The Carrigaline Fe12 team had their first football outing in the South East competition last Saturday morning in an away match to Ballygarvan.
The game began with great effort from both sides. However, this effort did not lead to many scores, as both sides squandered a number of scoring chances. Ballygarvan had the Carrigaline defence under constant pressure throughout, but some great defending kept Carrigaline in touch. Highlight of this first half was a fine opportunistic goal by Cian Diggins for Carrigaline. Half time arrived with only a score between the teams.
The second half was a different story with both sides making more scoring chances. When Carrigaline legs began to tire, Ballygarvan’s better teamwork began to tell and they managed to score a couple of crucial goals. From this point on, Carrigaline were chasing the game, but were unable to get the vital scores. Ballygarvan were deserving winners of this closely contested match. Credit must go to both teams for the spirit and fair play shown throughout.
This was an exceptionally committed performance by the Carrigaline players on their first outing. As they get more games, their teamwork will improve. Those who merit special mention on the day were Andrew O Gorman, Brendan Scully, Stephen Brophy & Cian Diggins (for that goal).
Next match is at home against Douglas.
Fe12 South East Football League
Last Sunday saw the 12C team kick off the 2005 season with a great game against Crosshaven. This team is officially known as Carrigaline 3 and is made up of Fe11 players. This was their first match of the year and despite having had only one practice session the Carrig lads served up a fantastic display of skill and determination only losing by two goals to last years County Championships.
The football from both teams was very entertaining and the skill level was very encouraging for the future. All the team put in a huge effort and congratulations to Dean Kent on scoring his first point for Carrigaline. This team will be at home to St Finbarrs next Sat. in this competition.

Fe14 City Football League
Carrigaline Fe14’s continued their good form by beating Brian Dillons 5-5 to 1-5 in the city football league, in an away game last Sunday evening.
Best for Carig on the day were Stephen Gorman, Wayne Bruton, Cian Sisk and Kaelan Spillane. This team will play against St. Nicholas in the next round.

BY NATHAN WALL PRO CARRIGALINE GAA CLUB
Last weekend yet again saw another hectic Sunday for team managers and players, with 5 football teams in action. The Minor A footballers were at home to Whites Cross and got their first win of the campaign. The Premier Minor footballers were away to St. Michaels and yet again put in a great all round team performance to make it 2 wins out of 2. The Junior 2 City team were up against Douglas and had a good victory. The KILLER B’s travelled to Mayfield in their Junior 3 City match and put in a solid performance to win and lastly at the same time in Carrigaline the Junior A football team played Shamrocks in the South East and were only beaten in the final 10minutes as the Carrig players ran out of steam. On Saturday the Intermediate hurlers had a challenge game against last years Intermediate county champions Watergrasshill and by all accounts this was a promising start by the hurlers who were narrowly beaten. Last Thursday night Mr Steve McCarthy of Astra Construction Carrigaline attended the presentation of the cheque to the club in the pavilion, Astra will be sponsoring the juvenile and adult side of the club for the next 3 years and this is great sponsorship for the club and the people of Carrigaline.

PREMIER MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The minor footballers made it two wins out of two with a 6-5 to 1-8 win over St. Michaels in Blackrock last Sunday morning. Carrig opened brightly with Joe Moran and Stephen O’Regan getting an early grip in midfield. Craig Neville was denied a goal by an excellent save from the St. Michaels keeper. Craig opened Carrigs account with a point in the 6th minute. St. Michaels broke downfield for a goal in the 7th minute and despite Carrig having the majority of possession they were 1-2 to 0-1 ahead after 17 minutes. Cormac Creed Nolan pointed a free in 20th minute but this was immediately cancelled out. Wesley O’Brien pointed in the 23rd minute. St. Michaels pointed in the 30th minute but Carrig got the goal that they deserved when Stephen O’Regan won possession in midfield. Timmy Kenneally who was very prominent throughout the game broke through and released Cormac Creed Nolan who found the net to leave the half time score Carrigaline 1-3, St Michaels 1-4. A Cormam Creed Nolan free in the first minute of the second half had Carrig on level terms before Coramc had his second goal in the 3rd minute. Quick thinking from Timmy Kenneally with a quick free kick, with Cormac bravely getting to the punch before the goalkeeper. Hugh Cox added a point in the in the 5th minute before Craig Neville put Carrig firmly in the driving seat with another goal in the 7th minute.

The goals kept coming with Darragh Cotter getting two and Craig Neville adding another one to leave the final score Carrigaline 6-5, St. Michaels 1-8.

JUNIOR B’s V’s MAYFIELD
The Carrigaline junior B team got back on track after a minor glitch last weekend with a fine win over a sporting Mayfield team. The game started at a very high tempo with each side exchanging scores in the first ten minutes, with the Carrig midfield pairing of Micheal Kiernan and Brian Scanlon wining some important battles in the middle of the field. The Carrig Defence being lead by TJ Cronin and Eoin Murphy soon got to grips with their Mayfield counterparts and kept Mayfield’s scoring to a minimum. At half time the scoreline was 1 goal 4 points to 1 goal 2 points in Carrigs Favour. The Start of the second half saw Carrig dominating more and more with some fine running and play from the lively Simon Deedee and the free scoring Barry Houlihan with a splendid goal to increase the deficit. Carrigs dominance continued with points from Shane Rath, Micheal Kiernan and the impressive all day Mickey Quinn leaving the final score 2goals 9 points to 1 goal 4 points to Carrigaline. O’KEEFFE SPARKLES FOR CARRIG U21s
BY Nathan Wall PRO

On Sunday last the 7th March, the Carrigaline U21 Footballers began their South East Championship Campaign at home to Courcey Rovers. It was a superb afternoon for a football match and the GAA grounds were in great condition. After the U21 game the Intermediates played their 2nd match of the Tom Creedon Cup playing Ballinora, who knocked us out of the Championship last year in Bandon and were looking for revenge. On Sunday the Minor A footballers played Tracton in Minane Bridge and after an hours of excitement football came off with a draw. The KILLER B’s had their first defeat of the year to Rochestown in the Junior 3 city and by all accounts were very unlucky to lose this match after a great performance by all again.

SOUTH EAST U21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
Carrigaline, last years beaten finalists opened their U21 season encounter last Sunday against a very young Courcey Rovers side in great conditions in Carrigaline. Carrig got off to a flying start after Elliot o’Keeffe put Carrigs first point of the day on the scoreboard with a fine effort in the 1st minute. Courceys who on the day fought very hard and never gave up replied with a point. After some fine play from full forward Daniel Twomey, who passed the ball nicely to Barry o’ Keeffe, Carrig got their first of 5 goals after young O’Keeffe went on a fine solo run and nicely put the ball in the Rovers net. Nevertheless, the Ballinspittle side had brought the deficit back to a point by the 10th minute when they got 2 points but thereafter the Carrig lads monopolised possession. Points from young O’Keeffe and Tony o’Sullivan getting the home side’s 2nd goal after good work from half forward Michael o’Sullivan. Carrig at this stage of the game were dominating possession well and picked off their scores with ease from the boot of Paul Holland who worked very hard through the whole game, O’Keeffe (2) and Michael o’Sullivan. Courcey’s while on the attack had a penalty to try bring themselves back into the match but their effort was poorly struck and Carrig keeper Matthew O’Sullivan saved with ease. The Carrig defence on the day where outstanding with captain Andy O’Keeffe at full back dominating, his two corner backs Cian O’Mahony and David Cowhig also dominating the game and young Joseph Moran at center back holding the fort very well. Carig went into the break well on top with the scoreline reading 2-8 to Rovers 0-3 and the away team had an uphill battle ahead of them. The 2nd half was the same as the first but with some very hard and late tackles ruining the game. The Carrig lads continued to score with points from Michael O’Sullivan, Tony O’Sullivan found himself unmarked on the 13metre line and he scored his 2nd goal of the day. The game became scrappy with Courceys tackling late and giving away a lot of frees and scores soon dried up, until in the last ten minutes the home side went up another gear. John Winters got Carrigs 4th goal and Daniel Twomey got the 5th and 4 unanswered points saw Carrig steam ahead. Couceys kept battling away and never gave up. But on the day Carrigs skill and superiority was never in doubt. Best on the day for Carrig was Andy O’Keffe, Cian O’Mahony, Joseph Moran, Tony O’Sullivan and Man of the Match Barry O’Keeffe.
TEAM: M O’Sullivan, C O’Mahony, A O’Keeffe (c), D Cowhig, C Lynch, J Moran, G Harrington, R Hennessey, E O’Keeffe, J Winters, P Holland, M O’Sullivan, B O’Keeffe, D Twomey, T O’Sullivan.
Scorers For Carrigaline: T O’Sullivan 2-2, B O’Keeffe 1-4, D Twomey and J Winters 1-1, P Holland 0-3, E O’Keeffe and M O’Sullivan 0-1

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL T.C.C
After the U21 match the Intermediates played Ballinora in the 2nd round of the Tom Creedon Cup. Ballinora started the game as the stronger team and went into an early lead with 4 unanswered points. Carrig then back to settle into the match and got their first point from John Mullaney. Ballinora played some fine football and their kicking was superb. Carrig had to rely on Kieran Blake, Brian Irwin and Jeff Dillon to try and keep the Balliniora forwards at bay. David Fleming was a tower of strength in midfield and was dominant through out the game. Elliot O’Keeffe got Carrigs only goal of the match with a fine lob. Ballinora registered 3 more points and at half led 0-7 to Carrigs 1-2. The 2nd half was a repeat of the first with Ballinora coming out with all guns blazing and were kicking very well between the posts. Carrig were finding it hard to cope with their fast play and were 5 points down early on in the half. Carrig had a good spell and found it hard to get scores after the Ballinora pulled off some fine saves. The home side ran out of team at the end and Ballinora had an easy victory on the scoreline of 1-14 to Carrigs 1-3, but the score had no reflection on the match as this was an hour of good football from both sides.
MINOR “A” CITY/SE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
On Sunday the Minor A footballers traveled to Minane Bridge to play local rivals Tracton. In the past few weeks the lads have had no luck in their games coming up against stronger city sides but they never give up and are getting better as they go on. The Carrig side stared off very well and never looked backed as they dominated all areas of the pitch. With just 10mins gone the Carrig management had to take Daragh Coughlan off due to an injury and this was a major blow to the team. Jerry McCarthy filled the center back position and he done very well. After 20mins Tracton led 1-4 to 0-2. Half time brought two changes to the carrig side with the introduction of Simon Deady and Tony Murphy. Carrig unfortunately ran out of steam at the end and with the final kick of the match Tracton put the ball between the posts to tie the game. Final Score was Carrigaline 1-7 Tracton 1-7. Best for Carrig Steven Griffin, John Walsh, and a Man of the match performance by Corner Back Peter O’Mahony.

Fe15 City Football League
Carrigaline 3-10 Ballinora 3-8

Last Saturday the Fe15 footballers played Ballinora in the city league, in what was a very tight affair. Carrigaline started very well with a few early points. At that stage Carrigaline seemed to be on top, but Ballinora had other ideas and began to play very attractive football, with their centre forward causing huge problems. David O’Regan dropped back to centre-back, and Brian Twomey went out mid-field with Simon O’Brien moving to centre forward seemed to stem the Ballinora tide. At half-time Carrigaline were down 3-4 to 1-5.

Michael O’Connor had a few stern words for the lads at half-time and this really seemed to work, because the lads scored 2-2 without reply in the first few minutes of the second half. Tony O’Connor having got injured had to come off and Kevin Kidney came on and straight away and was involved in what was a superb team score. Redvers McGrath was having a personal battle of his own with the corner back, but he let his football do the talking. With time nearly up and only 2 points between the sides, Jonathan Bermingham made as good a save that anyone has seen for many a long day. Carrigaline held out to win by 2 points. David O’Regan was outstanding on the day.
Fe14 City Football
Carrigaline Fe14 footballers were away to Nemo last Saturday. This was their first match in the city league, ending with a good win over Nemo. The team gave a good all round performance, with Oisin Finn, Niall Creed Nolan and Eoin Kavanagh playing very well.
Fe13 Football
Carrigaline 2-7 Douglas 2-2
Carrigline came out on top in a keenly contested challenge match against Douglas, last Saturday afternoon. Both sides were a bit rusty at times, as would be expected at this stage of the season. Carrigaline started the better of the two sides and went into a 4 point lead at the interval. Padraic Conway and Diarmuid Hickey were prominent in the scoring exchanges.
Douglas came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half and goaled before Carrig had settled. Carrigaline rallied with Kiieran Malone strong in the back line and Cian o’Flynn scoring. Stephen O’Flynn’s key saves meant that Carrig won the day.
Squad: S.O’Flynn, C. Naughton, C. Malone, S. Caffrey, G. O’Mahony, C. Allen, S. O’Mullane, C. O’Flynn, M. O’Hanlon, L. O’Hanlon, M. Malloy, K. Hickey, C. Lynch, P. Conway, K. Murphy, P. Bresnan, A. O’Flynn.

INTERMEDIATES MAKE IT TWO OUT OF TWO

By Nathan Wall PRO Carrigaline Gaa club

Last weekend the intermediate footballers played their 2nd game of the year playing Valley Rovers in the Tom Creedon Cup which was played in Carrigaline, at the same time the Junior A footballers travelled to Belgooly in the south east league and were beaten by a stronger Belgooly team. Earlier in the day the Minor Premier footballers played Macroom in the first game of the year in this grade and showed a great all round team performance to come out the better side. On Sunday the Minor A footballers travelled to Mayfield in the city league and were also beaten by a very strong Mayfield team. Later that day the Junior 2 city team played Lough Rovers and 10 minutes into the 2nd half the game was called off because the visitors only had 13 players so Carrig got the victory but Carrig were well on top anyway. The Junior 3 city teams game at home to Ballinure was also called off because the visiting team failed to show up. On Sunday Carrigaline had 2 Minor hurling players involved with the Cork Minor hurling team, so well done to Raymond Keohane and Wesley O’Brian on this achievement. The night before saw the Club holding its annual Dinner dance which was held in the Carrigaline Court Hotel, the Minor A hurling team were presented with their south east medals from last year and well done to all players and management involved. This Sunday the 6th March sees the U21 footballers play Courcey Rovers in the opening game of the U21 south east Championship which will be played in Carrigaline @ 1500, All your support for this excellent U21 team will be needed.

PREMIER MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
On Saturday last, the Premier Minor football team played Macroom in their opening match of the year in cold conditions in Carrigaline. Carrigaline started very well against a strong Macroom team who won the Minor A county last year. The Carrig players were holding the fort well with some great defending in the first quarter by Peter Roynane and Kieran Kelleher. Carrig got their first score of the day on the 5th minute from the boot of Alan Jenkinson who neatly placed the ball in the Macroom net. A highlight from the Carrig forwards on the day was their ability to put a lot of pressure on the Macroom defenders when the away team had the ball. Macroom got their first score of the day from a pointed free and this seemed to be the only way they were going to get scores as the Carrig defence led by Ray Keohane and Joe Moran were solid out. On the 15th minute the Carrig players began to relax and began to pass off some poor ball and Macroom took advantage of this and on the 20th minute went into the lead by a point but this was the only time they would do so. On the 25th minute after a great ball from Timmy Kennelly Carrig got their 2nd goal from the fist of Cormac Crid Nolan who on the day worked extremely hard to get this victory.
Wesley O’Brian made it 2-1 to 0-4 nearing half time. On the stroke of half time Kennelly had a great effort saved by the Macroom defender and on the rebound Daragh Cotters shot rattled the crossbar. Half time score was Carrig 2-1 – Macroom 0-4. Both teams started the 2nd half well but after some fine work from half back Colin Touhy his fine effort sailed over the bar for the first score of the half. The visitors made it 2-2 to 0-5 after 10 minutes. Crid Nolan got another point for Carrig with a fine solo run. The score could have been higher only for some awful kicking from both teams. At this stage Macroom started to pile on the pressure but credit must be given to the Carrig defence on the day for their fine defending. Macroom were rewarded for their efforts on the 15th minute with a superb point from their full forward. On the 18th minute Kennelly rattled the net with another great goal, Carrig got 3 unanswered points to make the scoreline at the final whistle 3-6 to Macrooms 0-8. So a great performance all round by all players.

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL TOM CREEDON CUP
The Intermediate Footballers played their 2nd match of the year at home to Valley’s in the Tom Creedon Cup on Saturday. The first 5 minutes was evenly sided but Carrg were first off the mark with a kicked free from Ossie. Valley’s put a lot of pressure on the Carrig team after this but with some great defending by Brian Irwin the visitors couldn’t find a way through. Carrig began to get into the match then with some great work from Eoin De Barra and Peter Murphy. Another well taken free from Ossie made it 0-2 to nil after 5 minutes. Carrig began to break the Valley’s defence at this stage and Nicholas Murphy who on the day was absolutely outstanding, scored Carrigs 3rd point. Yet again Ken O’ Keefee who had a great game the week before in Limerick was kicking very well and he made it 0-4. The Valley’s defence on the day was very poor and a mistake by their full back gifted Carrigs first goal which was easily scored by John Mullaney. Soon after the goal Valleys registered their first score of the match from a very harsh free. O’Keefee made it 2-5 0-1 after a great 45meter ball from Nicholas. Valley’s replied with 3 unanswered points and at half time Carrig led 2-5 to 0-4. The 2nd half was the same as the first with Carrig dominating all over the field especially in the centre of the field. In the 2nd half Valleys were fouling a lot and Ossie was punishing them dearly for this. After the 15th minute of the first half Carrig led 2-8 to Valleys 0-5. Peter Murphy got Carrigs 3rd and final goal and points from De Barra, Fleming, O’Keefee, helped Carrig storm ahead and Valleys were never going to catch them. The final score was Carrig 3-09 to Valley’s 0-7.
