STREET LEAGUE REPORTS MAY 29TH

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

The South East Under 10 Football tournament started last Sunday evening. Teams from Ballinhassig, Sliabh Rua and Valley Rovers joined two teams from Carrigaline. Valley Rovers were the strongest team and won all their games. Sliabh Rua, also very strong won all their games except for their match against Valley Rovers. Ballinhassig had some fine players on show and Carriagaline had mixed fortunes with some fine wins and courageous losers. The games were very well supported by parents while referees Sean Ryle and Padraig Cotter did excellent work, despite some controversial decisions.

Carrigaline A were comfortable winners over Ballinhassig and had a very close game with Sliabh Rua who emerged victorious with a final score of 8 to 3.

Carrigaline B also managed a win over Ballinhassig but lost to Sliabh Rua. The Sliabh Rua match was the first game for Carrigaline B and despite a fine display, Sliabh Rua’s physically stronger team saw them emerge victorious.

The Sliabh Rua and Valley Rovers game was a fine game of football. Two well trained and strong teams battled it out to see who would be leaders of the evening tournament. Valley Rovers proved to be the stronger team on the night with a final score of 6 to 3.

The last game of the evening was between the two Carrigaline teams. Carrigaline B emerged victorious with some great displays. Carrigaline A battled to the end and as the games went on showed fine promise. Well done to both teams on an excellent display of commitment and skill.

City Bord-na-nOg Reports

Fe13 City Hurling
Carrigaline travelled to Mayfield for this Fe13 fixture on a wet evening last Wednesday. It was a well contested game, but Mayfield had the edge throughout and scored the goals that won them the game.

Fe 12 (2) Hurling v Barrs
This was a thrilling game between two very committed teams played at Togher on Friday last. The outcome was in doubt right up to the final minutes when the Barrs scored a decisive goal to clinch victory on the scoreline 3-2 to 2-1.
Best for Carrig in a great team performance were David O Shea, Robert Foster, Conor Gould and Cillian O Mahony. Shane Griffin had an outstanding game at centre-back while his namesake in goal pulled off a string of superb saves and was without doubt man-of-the-match.

Fe 14 Hurling v Na Piarsaigh
On Saturday last Carrig renewed rivalry with Na Piarsaigh at the latter’s venue. This was an outstanding game between two evenly-matched teams. After an absorbing hour’s hurling the sides finished deadlocked at 2-10 each. A goal on the stroke of fulltime by Wayne Bruton gave Carrig a one point lead but Na Piarsaigh rallied once more to equalise from a free in added time. Best for carrig were Michael O Donovan, Oisin Finn and EoinBrennan

South-East Bord-na-nOg Reports

Fe14C South East Hurling
Ballygarvan were the visitors to Carrigaline last Thursday night. Ballygarvan opened the scoring, but Carrig soon responded. The Carrig forwards looked dangerous, Alan. Cooney, Stephen. Caffrey and Conor O Mahony causing their markers plenty of problems. It was all still to play for at half time, as Carrig led by 2-4 to 3 points.
The second half began with Cian O’Flynn getting a long range gaol. At the other end Sean O’Donovan was having an excellent evening in goal, dealing with everything that came his way with great composure. He was ably assisted by a cohesive Carrig back line unit, where Peter Bresnan and Chris Allen stood out conceding only two scores in the second half. Carrig’s superior goal scoring ability ensured a comfortable victory in the end.

CARRIG HURLERS LOSE DESPITE BRAVE CHALLENGE IN OPENING ROUND!
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP V’s MILLFORD:
A magnificent goal by Millford’s Mick O’ Connell, who soloed 40 meters before scoring in the 50th minute, proved the decisive score in this keenly contested opening round game of the Intermediate championship in a rain sodden pitch in Castletownroche last Wednesday night. The game was a repeat of last year’s first round, which Carrigaline won after a replay and while there was never a hint of the antics which marred the drawn game, there was a great edge to the game. On a night totally unsuitable for hurling, Carrigaline got the dream start and playing with great authority particularly in attack, they stormed into a 0-4 0-1 lead after 7 minutes. Millford did create a number of chances in that opening period but a weakness in attack cost them several scores and were playing a lot of ball to Cork minor Eoin Dillon but he was marked closely and superbly by fellow minor Joe Moran who had an excellent game on the night. Carrig were also dependent on their free taker Brendan O’ Driscoll to a large extent and his accuracy saw his side go into the break 0-9 0-7 in front, a poor return for Carrig’s early dominance. Early in the second half both sides for guilty of some dreadful misses and hit 6 wides between them before this keenly contested game saw the opening goal for Millford. A rather silly free was punished by Millford when the Carrig defence failed to clear a long delivery and the Millford corner forward rattled the Carrig net to put them into the lead for the first time and they never lost this lead. Carrigaline threw everything at Millford in the final 10 minutes but failed to get the goal they so dearly needed. As the tension mounted so too did the keenness of the exchanges and amid great excitement Raymond Keohane tied the game with a fine point. However it was to be Millford’s night as they hung on to win by 2 points. Both teams entertained the large crowd with an hour of superb hurling. Carrig were served well on the night by Paul Foster, Joe Moran, Raymond Keohane, Gary Harrington and Nicholas Murphy. Carrigaline now play local rivals Ballygarvan in the back door in a mouth-watering contest on June 15th venue and time TBA. Final score Carrigaline 0-14 Millford 2-10. CARRIGALINE TEAM: E. O’ Sullivan, G. Hoey, J. Murphy, A. O’ Keeffe, J. Moran, P. Foster, G. Harrington, K. O’ Driscoll, M. Cuddihy, R. keohane, N. Murphy, B. O’ Driscoll, S. Corcoran, G. Cooney, B. Irwin. Scorers for Carrigaline: B. O’ Driscoll 0-5 (0-4 frees, 0-1 65), G. Cooney, R. Keohane, N. Murphy, 0-2 each, B. Irwin, S. Corcoran, K O’ Driscoll (65) 0-1 each.
JUNIOR ‘A’ HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP V’s BALLINHASSIG:
On Sunday evening in warm conditions in Shanbally the Carrig Junior hurlers played Ballinhassig in the opening game of the south east championship. Carrigaline were looking for there first championship win in this grade since we got promoted to Intermediate last year and the players were feeling confident. After a blistering start Carrig took an early advantage and were hurling well against a strong wind and things were looking good. But as Carrig were getting into the swing of the game, Ballinhassig scored the 1st of 5 goals that would punish the Carrig team. Carrig kept plucking hard at the Ballinhassig lads but 2 further goals just before half time sunk Carrig’s chances. Half time score Carrigaline 0-8 Ballinhassig 3-8. Early in the second half Carrigaline threw everything at the Ballinhassig defence but failed to get the goals they needed so badly to get back into the match and were punished for every miss. As Carrigaline failed to score it was the opposite at the other end 2 more goals further hardened Carrig’s chances. On the night the team hurled exceptionally well but failed to get the goals they so badly needed and now play Belgooly on Saturday June 4th in the back door, time and venue TBA.
OTHER RESULTS AND NEWS:
In the Non Exam football league, Macroom beat Carrigaline well last Tuesday night and in the hurling league the lads continued their good run by beaten Ballincollig. Last Friday night in Fermoy the Carrigdhoun senior hurlers played Avondhu in the Senior Championship first round and after an hour of standard hurling Avondhu advanced to the next round to face Imokilly. Carrigaline were represented on the night by Kevin O’ Driscoll Jnr, Eoin O’ Sullivan and Nathan Wall.

UNDERAGE REPORTS MAY 22ND

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Two games were played in the City Under 12 Hurling League during the past week resulting in two great victories.

Fe 12 HL Glen Rvs. 0-1 Carrigaline (2) 2-2

The scoreline does not reflect the closeness of this game played at the Glen Field on Wednesday last. It was a game eagerly and sportingly contested by two very skilful teams. Best for Carrigaline in a great team performance were Brian Lynch, Robert Foster, Kevin O Connell and Cian Lynch.

Fe 12 HL Carrigaline (2) v Ballincollig

In this game played at Carrigaline on Saturday last the Carrig lads recorded a comprehensive victory. Conor Gould played very well at midfield and ensured a plentiful supply of possession for the forwards who were in great scoring form.
Jamie Depuis led the line well at centre-forward and was ably assisted by Kevin Martin, David O Donovan, and Jason Brady. Even regular full back Cillian O Mahony got in on the act. Moving to full forward he bagged three goals in a great team performance

Application forms for Club Summer Camp (July 4th – 8th) will shortly be available.

D-DAY FOR CARRIG HURLERS
By Nathan Wall PRO
The week ahead sees Carrigalines Intermediate team and Junior team play their first round matches in their championship. The Intermediates play Millford on Wednesday 25th May in Castletownroche in the opening round of the Intermediate championship and going by last year’s game this should be a cracking encounter. On Thursday 26th May in Shanbally the Junior A hurlers play Ballinhassig in their opening round of the south east championship and will be hoping to beat last year’s beaten finalists, both games have a 1945 throw in. games in the past week have been limited with only the Junior B footballers playing Rochestown in the south east league and winning on a scoreline of Carrigaline 4-6 Rochestown 4-3. The Minor non-exam teams were also in action with the footballers drawing with Ballincollig on Tuesday night and the hurlers beaten Innascarra on Saturday night by a goal. Also the club have 3 players involved with the Carrigdhoun Senior hurlers who play Avondhu in the opening game of the senior Championship and 1 selector, the players are Kevin O’ Driscoll, Eoin O’ Sullivan and Nicholas Murphy and the selector is Nathan Wall, Best of luck to all involved.
Minor Non- Exam League:
On Saturday last we played our second game in the non- exam-hurling league away to Innascarra having already defeated Blackrock in the opening round. This was a good hard game of hurling between two committed sides that both gave there all over the hour. Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half Carrig took the game to the home side but despite some good pressure failed to break away from the mid cork side. The Carrig defence was not having one of its better days and but for the work of keeper Shane Barry we would have been in big trouble. The forwards were also finding the game tough against an Innascarra defence determined to prevent carrig from scoring. However through good work from Tony Murphy, Steve Corcoran and Joe Moran we led by a point at half time. The Carrig mentors made some positional changes at half time and this seemed to have the desired effect as Carrig came more into the game. An Innascarra goal rocked carrigaline but some excellent play from sub Simon Deedy and Corcoran who passed a great ball to Tony Murphy to finish to the net. This score lifted Carrig and for the last 15 minutes Innascarra couldn’t break through the Carrigaline Defence. The final score was Carrigaline 1-12 Innascarra 1-9 and an important win for the Carrig lads. On the day we had fine performances from Jason Kidney, Kieran Kelleher, Tony Murphy and Peter O’ Mahoney. Next game is at home to Ballincollig on Sat 28th at 1930.
FIXTURES:

FÉ 14 Hurling Championships

Carrigaline 1-6 Na Piarsaighs 4-9
Unfortunately our under 14’s bowed out of the hurling championship last Saturday, when they were beaten by a superior Na Piarsaighs side.

The wind played a large factor in this game, as did the fact that we were missing some key players on the day. The game started with Carrigaline playing with the wind. Our lads played some fine hurling, but were not converting enough of their chances to scores. David Drake was outstanding at centre field and scored a total of 1-4 in the first half. Michael O’Donovan was having a royal battle with the Na Piarsaighs centre forward throughout the half and Michael Dwane and Stephen Gorman were very solid in the half back line. Cian Barry was trying his heart out at centre forward, but the Na Piarsaighs back line were very strong. Carrigaline went in at half time a single point ahead 1-5 to 2-1.

We knew we were up against it in the second half with Na Piarsaighs having the wind at their backs. Within 2 minutes, Na Piarsaigh had the sliotar in the back of the net and when they added three points in succession, our lads heads started to drop. Although our backs were valiant in their defence, it was never going to happen for the Carrig lads. Na Piarsaighs ran out easy winners in the end. Sean Conlon had a super second half performance, as did Sean Mellett, Cian Barry and David Drake. A special mention to Eoin Brennan who was outstanding in goal.

It’s a great credit to our lads that they kept fighting to the very end. All the lads played their hearts out and nothing more could have been asked of them. Well done lads on a gutsy performance.

Team Squad:
E.Brennan, D.Spillane, S.Mellett, C.Sisk, M.Dwane, M.O’Donovan, S.Gorman, L.O’Regan, D.Drake, P. McGrath, C.Barry, S.O’Halloran, D.O’Keeffe, O.Finn, S.Conlon, R.Duggan, E.Kavanagh, E.Horgan, C.O’Mahony , N. Martin

Fe12 City Hurling League
Carrigaline 1-5 St. Finbarrs 3-4
Carrigaline1 playing with a very strong breeze in the first half, built up an early lead scoring 1-4 without reply in this city hurling match against St Finbarrs. They were first to every ball playing great first time hurling and this was evident after ten minutes, when Stephen Dwane scored a wonderful goal with a great strike from distance.
The second half was a totally different game. The Barrs hit two early goals that rocked the Carrigaline lads and playing against the stiff breeze they couldn’t get the ball up field and the Barrs ran out comfortable winners.
Team: E. O’Donovan, P. Ahern, M. Lynch, E. O’Donnell, K. Kavanagh, C. McSweeney, D. Drinan, J.O’Keeffe, E. Moynihan, D. O’Brien, R. O’Shea, S. Dwane, B. Curran, A. O’Reilly, K. Conlon, S. Brophy, R. Diggins, T. McSweeney, M. McIntyre, M. Quinn, D. O’Sullivan.

Fe12(2) City Hurling League
Carrigaline v Ballygarvan

This was Carrigaline’s Fe12(2) first hurling match of the season, a home game against Ballygarvan. This was the same pairing as last year’s Fe11C final. The Carrig lads got stuck in from the start and produced a very encouraging display. They notched up a score of 4 goal and 11 points. As it was also Communion Day and both teams were short players. Conor Gould was our best forward on the day scoring 1 goal and 8 points. Jamie Depuis was outstanding and definitely the “man of the match”. The next game will be against Glen Rovers on Wednesday May 18th.

Fe14C South East Hurling
Carrigaline v Kinsale
Last Thursday evening Fe14C had a home game against Kinsale. The Carrig lads played well and were ahead throughout the game, ending in their favour on a score of 3-8 to 2-5.

Fe12B South East Football Semi-Final
Carrigaline v Courcey Rovers

Carrigaline 1 Fe12’s had a comfortable win over Courcey Rovers in the south east semi-final last Monday night. The Carrig lads played some outstanding football and scored some great points making them easy winners.
They now play a strong and favourite Valley Rover’s team in the final next week. Best of luck lads! All support welcome.

Fe12C South East Football Semi-Final
Carrigaline v Shamrocks
Carrigaline 3 also reached the semi-final of the south east, which was played against Shamrocks last Monday night. This was a well contested game. All the Carrig lads played well with a committed team effort. But the physical strength of the Shamrock team showed in the end and they ran out the winners.

CARRIGALINE FAIL TO TAKE THEIR CHANCES
By Nathan Wall PRO

JUNIOR ‘A’ FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
In Riverstick last Friday evening, the carrigaline Junior ‘A’ footballers played Kinsale in the South East championship in front of a small crowd. In the opening few minutes of the game both teams had early chances to register points but failed to do so. Playing with a strong wind it was Kinsale who got the first point of the match and it took a great save from Carrigaline keeper Tony Harris to prevent them from goaling soon after. Carrigaline should have been ahead after 8 minutes but put their efforts on the wrong side of the posts. Carrig got their first point of the game after 10 minutes through Elliot O’ Keeffe after some fine work by Daniel Twomey in the forward. No sooner had he scored then Kinsale went back in front and converted two frees to see them go 3 points clear. In between Elliot O’ Keeffe and Sean Corkery missed relatively easy scoring chances for Carrigaline. After 20 minutes gone Kinsale saw themselves go further ahead and this was their final point of the first half. At the other end it was Kinsale who were to be thankful to their goalie after he denied Sean Corkery a certain goal and Carrigaline got the final score of the half after Eoin O’ Sullivan pointed to see Kinsale lead 0-5 to 0-2 at half time. The second half saw Carrigaline up their performance but yet again they squandered opportunities to reduce the deficit between the sides. Kinsale increased their lead to 0-7 to 0-2 after ten minutes. Carrig could have seen themselves go further behind but only for some fine saves from Tony Harris in goal but 2 more unanswered points saw Kinasle slowly drift away from the men in Blue and Yellow. With 20 minutes gone Kinsale were awarded a penalty which rattled the post and rebounded off Harris to go out for a 45, which they failed to convert. Carrigaline fought hard with Peter Ronane, Eoin O’ Sullivan and Daniel Twomey fighting hard till the end. Kinasle increased their lead to 0-10 to 0-2 before Carrigaline were awarded a penalty with time ticking on. Mark Doody’s effort was saved well by the keeper and Kinasle went down the field to register their final point of the game. The final score does not reflect the Carrigaline performance, they all played well and fought hard but it was the fact that they failed to take their chances that cost them on the night. Carrigaline now face Ballymartle in the loser’s round and must win this if they hope to progress in the Championship. Final score Carrigaline 0-2 Kinsale 0-11. Team: T Harris, A O’ Keeffe, B Irwin, R Jenkinson, C Lynch, P Holland, P Ronane, S Corkery, E O’ Sullivan, M Doody, E O’ Keeffe, O Conlon, C Irwin, D Twomey, J Mullaney. Subs used: K Meehan and R Barrett.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
In Ballygarvan last Tuesday night the Intermediate hurlers played their 3rd league match and were looking for their first league win. Carrigaline who were missing a lot of their regular players opened the scoring account with a pointed free by Stephen Corcoran. Early pressure from the home side kept Carrig on their toes another point from Brendan O’ Driscoll put Carrig 2 points clear after some fine work by Corcoran and Peter Murphy Jnr. Ballygarvan replied with a point but it was soon cancelled out with another fine Corcoran point. Straight from the puck out Ballygarvan got the first goal of the game to put them a point clear and replied with another 2 unanswered points. The quality of hurling in this game was outstanding and it was the first time ever that these teams played at this grade and could possibly play each other in championship. Carrigaline soon leveled it after a superb doubled goal by Peter Murphy. After this the home side were in complete control and scored 3 unanswered points to leave the score at half time Carrigaline 1-3 Ballygarvan 1-6. The home side started the 2nd half the same as they ended the first with 2 early points but Brendan O’ Driscoll narrowed the gap with a point. Carrigaline fell asleep for a short while and gifted the Garvan’s 4 easy points from play but yet again it was O’ Driscoll who gave Carrig a lifeline after his effort from a free rattled the back of the net and soon replied with a point to make it Carrigaline 2-5 Ballygarvan 1-12. This lifted Carrigaline and they soon took control of the game, points from Harrington and Cuddihy put only 2 points between the sides. But the home side broke Carrigalines hearts, an error in the Carrig defence gifted Ballygarvan their second goal and 3 unanswered points sealed their victory in this great contest. Final score Carrigaline 2-7 Ballygarvan 2-15.

Boys Ages 10 & Under
There was quite an amount of activity last weekend.
Training went ahead for both Football & Hurling and with fabulous weather, a great turnout was had both days.

Sunday morning Douglas paid a visit to Carrigaline with a large contingent of players. This was for Hurling Challenge matches across the different age groups.
Teams were made up of 8 to 10 players per side. This gave the children the opportunity to play and be involved in as many different games as possible. The support and encouragement being given from the coaches, mentors and many parents was mostly drowned out by the shouts and screams of delight from the players themselves. Across the games there were quite a number of exceptional performances from Carrigaline players. One game in particular had a Carrigaline player in a starring role, who in the final 6 mins of the game scored 2 goals and was responsible for 2 more being scored by his team mates. Unfortunately for Carrigaline he was playing with Douglas at the time.
In all there were a total of nine games played. Results were 4 Wins for Carrigaline, 4 Wins for Douglas and 1 a Draw.

More challenge matches are being organised for various ages. Timing of these games will be down to the condition of the pitches (after the weather) and their availability. Details to be advised by your coach at training.

Please note Training times:-
Football Saturday 14th 11.30 A.M to 12.30 P.M.
Hurling Sunday 15th 11.00 A.M to 12.00 P.M.

Fe14C South East Hurling
Carrigaline v Sliabh Rua

Sliabh Rua were the visitors to Carrigaline in this south east clash last Friday evening. This turned out to be an entertaining and keenly contested fixture. Carrig had the best of the opening exchanges and utilized the wind advantage going in six points to the good.
Sliabh Rua came out in the second half determined to eat into Carrigaline’s lead, but Carrig remained focused and won on a scoreline of 3-4 to 2-5. This was a very encouraging start to the campaign for the Carrig lads. David Spillane, Eoin Brennan, Luke O’Hanlon, and Stephen Caffrey were amongst those to perform well on the night.
Fe12C South East Football
This Fe12C match was an away game to Crosshaven last Sunday morning. This was an extremely entertaining match. In the first half, Crosshaven played against strong wind and rain and were ahead at half time.
In the second half, Carrig improved their game and team work and came within a point of snatching a draw. The crossbar and post denied Carrig two certain goals. This was the final match in this competition and shows a tremendous improvement since their initial outing. Well done lads!
Fe12B South East Football
Carrigaline 4-5 Douglas 0-5

The Carrig Fe12B team were away to Douglas last Monday evening. Carrigaline secured a home draw in this south east semi-final with an excellent win against Douglas.
Fe16 City Football
Na Piarsaigh came out on top last Tuesday in this city league match. The remainder of the matches in this league will be postponed until after the exams.
>B>Fe13 City Hurling League

Carrigaline 6-6 Douglas 2-1
Carrigaline won out comfortable winners against Douglas in this city league fixture. Cian O’Flynn, A. Cooney, M. O’Hanlon and C. Allen were some of Carrig’s best performers on the day. Carrrig can look forward with some hope to the season if they can maintain this level of effort and keep improving their performance.
Fe12 City Hurling League
Carrigaline 0-7 Blackrock 2-4

Sun shining, a good pitch and a bunch of young lads giving their all, made this Fe12 fixture a very entertaining game of hurling between two evenly matched teams. Blackrock started the brighter, Carrig a bit off the pace in what was their first outing for this year with the small ball. Robert O’Shea caused endless headaches for the Blackrock defence and notched up 4points in the 1st half to leave the halftime score 1-2 to 4pts.
After the break, the lads now feeling victory was within their grasp tore into the Rockies and had some chances to go into the lead, but the ball was taking either side of the post with the breeze. Stephen Dwane and David Drinan controlled the half back line and time and time again broke up the Rockies forward play. Eoin O’Donavan pulled off a great penalty save, but shortly after, with Carrig trailing by a point and game finally balanced, Blackrocks full forward struck the killer blow with a well taken goal. Carrig went back up the pitch to score a point from Dylan O’Brien. Brain Curran had his goal bound shot blocked and try as they might Carrig couldn’t peg back the lead to leave Blackrock winners by a goal. Every player for Carrigaline tried hard, with Philip Ahern, Michael O’Grady, Kevin Conlon and John o’Keeffe excellent throughout.
