Fe 12 South-East B Hurling League
The under 12’s maintained their unbeaten run in the League when they travelled to Ballinspittle on Wednesday of last week and defeated Courceys on the scoreline 3-4 to 1-4. This means that they have finished top of the League and qualified for the semi-final which more than likely will be played on Monday next July 4th.
In the game v Courceys the team were defensively very sound with Stephen Dwane in the pivotal position and Anthony O Reilly at corner-back having outstanding games. Cillian McSweeney and John O Keeffe were a dominant midfield partnership with the latter scoring two great goals.

Fe 12 South East C Hurling League
A visit to Minane Bridge on Thursday of last week resulted in a titanic match with the home team just edging the honours by the narrowest of margins. It was a great game with play swinging from end to end, heroic defensive work and outstanding scores being taken. Peter Mullane and Conor Gould were a formidable midfield partnership while Shane Griffin in goal made some great saves. The other Shane Griffin at centre-back was a tower of strength all through. Anthony O Donnell and Shane Lynch also stood out in a great team performance.

Fe13 City Football League
Carrigaline travelled to Mayfield for their final fixture in the city football league last Saturday. A physically stronger Mayfield team made best use of a strong breeze advantage and built up a commanding lead that Carrig couldn’t bridge in the second half. Best for Carrig on the day were Cillian McSweeney, C. Malone, and J. Glennon.

Fe 12 City HL(2) v Bishopstown
Our under-11 team travelled to Bishopstown on Saturday last and came away with a fine win over the home side. Conor Gould was top scorer with four goals while Anthony O Donnell notched two. Peter Mullane continued his excellent form of late while Kevin Martin, David O Shea, David Canty, Brian Lynch, David O Donovan and David O Callaghan all contributed significantly to a great win.

Fe 16 City HL v Blackrock
Following the recent examinations the under-16 hurlers resumed competitive action
in the first round of the Fe 16 City Hurling League Competition on Saturday last in Carrigaline. In the absence of an official referee the visiting team refereed the game.
Carrigaline were short some regular players so all credit to Kevin Ahern who took the goalkeeper’s jersey at short notice.
The first half of this game was closely contested with little separating the teams. Early on both sides took their points, then Carrig put on the pressure and following a great pass by Simon O’Brien, Brendan Cashman got Carrig’s first goal. Carrig again scored following a pass from David O’Regan to Niall Coakley. Persistent pressure was put on the Carrig goal but Kevin Aherne made some good saves. A third goal for Carrigaline was followed by two quick goals from Blackrock. At half-time the score line read Carrigaline 3-3 Blackrock 2.5.
Carrig’s cause was not helped when three players were withdrawn at the interval to attend Cork Under 15 training. This changed the balance of the team for Carrigaline and they had to defend for the second half. Blackrock got on top and ran out comfortable winners. However the performance and work rate of the Carrig lads throughout was encouraging and praiseworthy
Best for Carrig on the day were Darragh Coughlan at full-back, Conor Hurley at centre-back and Robert Foley at mid-field.

Team panel as follows:
Kevin Ahern, James O’Reilly, Darragh Coughlan, Brian Giltinan, Mark Williamson, Conor Hurley, Andy O’Sullivan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Robert Foley, Eoin Harrington, Niall Coakley, Cian O’Sullivan, Simon O’Brien, David O’Regan and Brendan Cashman. Subs: Jamie O’Sullivan, James McCarthy, Eoin Conway, James O’Shea and Jamie Corcoran.

FEILE WEEKEND A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

All Ireland Feile Hurling Weekend 17th to 19th June 2005.

Last weekend we had the spectacle of the All Ireland Hurling Feile finals in Cork. This is the first of two years in which this Fe14 prestigious event is being held in Cork. It is also going to be held in Cork next year.

A total of 96 teams were competing in five divisions. Carrigaline were competing in the top division and were hosts to Dicksboro GAA club from Kilkenny. Dicksboro arrived in Carrigaline GAA club at midday on Friday 17th and from then the “show began”. There was an enormous amount of preparatory work that went into this event by a large number of club members. The club was looking fabulous and we were blessed with the weather.

The opening game took place at 3p.m. against Dicksboro. With only 15 minutes a side you needed quick scores (and preferably goals) to win these games. Unfortunately, Dicksboro got those scores and ran out easy winners in the end. Our lads tried really hard but Dicksboro were too strong for them on the day.

After the match the 29 Kilkenny lads met up with their host families for the first time. This was the start of the great friendships that were built up over the weekend. At 6p.m. both teams set off to town for the parade through the city. What a spectacle! In excess of 4,000 kids took part in a wonderful, colourful pageant. A tremendous atmosphere prevailed throughout as spectators and passers by clapped each of the teams. In Patrick Street Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh gave a brief summary of each club as they passed by the viewing stand and our captain Michael O’Donovan was presented with a commemorative Gold Medal and pennant by the GAA president Sean Kelly to mark the occasion.

On Saturday the rest of the preliminary matches of our group were played. Our lads were absolutely flat footed against the Waterford champions, Ballygunner and narrowly lost that game. All our heads were down as we knew that the lads had not played to anything like their potential. However, they came out in their last match against Douglas and played with great fire and determination and won through in the end. However, Dicksboro emerged as winners of our group and went on the play eventual champions, Kilmacud Crokes in the quarter finals in Blackrock on Saturday afternoon. They were beaten by the narrowest of margins (1 point) in a gruelling encounter, where the wind had a major influence on the game. Dicksboro looked more tired that they had since their arrival in Cork and were very unlucky not to emerge as winners of this game.

On Saturday evening our club played host to the semi final of Division 3 between Brian Dillons and Causeway from Kerry. The game was closely fought throughout with some fine hurling skills on show. The Kerry team won out in the end.

On Saturday evening we feted the Kilkenny lads and their mentors and families in the club. There was a disco for the young people and music and a Barbeque for all. The whole clubhouse was throbbing. It must rank as one of the great nights for the club.
During the evening Carrigaline and Dicksboro exchanged gifts of appreciation with one another and promised to keep the friendship and relationship together for the future.

It was an early start on Sunday morning when teams, mentors and families attended and participated in 10 O’clock mass. Fr. Bertie welcomed both teams and gave a very meaningful sermon to us all on the role we all have in mentoring people through life’s fears.

After mass we all congregated in the GAA Clubhouse for Tea & Biscuits and to say our final farewells to the Dicksboro entourage. Michael O’Donovan, Captain of the Fe 14 team presented a magnificent hand inscribed plate to each of the Dicksboro team players as a memento of the occasion.

That brought us to the end of the hurling Feile 2005 but it is the start of a future friendship between Carrigaline GAA Club and Dicksboro GAA Club. It was a tremendous occasion and we would like to sincerely thank all those who supported or helped to make it a resounding success for us. There was a lot of hard work and organising that went into the weekend by many people- the club thanks you all. Congratulations to the Fe 14 Manager Pat Barry, his selectors and of course to the players – you have made the club proud in the way you have projected this club during this prestigious competition.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS BOW OUT OF CHAMPIONSHIP
BY NATHAN WALL PRO
INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP V’s BALLYGARVAN
Last Wednesday evening saw the mouth-watering contest of Carrigaline playing local rivals Ballygarvan in the losers round of the Intermediate hurling championship in superb conditions in Minane Bridge. This was Carrigaline final chance of progressing in the championship and this was the same situation with the Ballygarvan men who were narrowly beaten by Eire Og in the opening round. In a winner takes all situation, Ballygarvans two-goal blast in either half proved to be the killer blow for the Carrig side. As with all local derbies, the crowd was always guaranteed plenty of excitement, but as regard a contest this game never ignited. Carrigaline were under pressure from the throw in and were soon trailing by 3 points but settled their game and points from young Stephen Corcoran and Ray Keohane were soon back in this match. But then came the first goal of the game which was a brilliant piece of individual skill from Ken Ashman when the wing forward picked the sliothar up on the 50 meters line and following a marvelous solo run blasted the roof of the net to the disgust of the Carrig team. But Carrig refused to give up after this and further points from Corcoran who was giving the Ballygarvan corner back a run around Carrig were only 2 points down at the interval. The second half was only a minute old when Ballygarvan were dealt a stern blow following a facial injury to midfielder Finbarr Barry. Although the Carrig side cut the deficit to a minimum by the three-quarter stage, they could never breach a formidable rearguard that exhibited the finest skills of the game in hooking and blocking. Consequently, Carrigaline will be very dishearted by their return. Apart from shadowing their opponents for a period early in the second half, they were never serious contenders. This was a big match for both clubs, but excepting half forwards Nicholas Murphy, Ray Keohane, Corner forward Stephen Corcoran and half back Gary Harrington to gave all he could, Carrig never left their mark. With ten minutes left on the clock Ballygarvan yet again rattled the net with the killer goal and after this goal, there was no looking back for the victors. With a succession of 5 late points they comfortably booked their place in the next round of the Intermediate hurling championship and best of luck to them. Best for Carrigaline on the night was Joe Moran, Nicholas Murphy, Ray Keohane, Stephen Corcoran, Paul Foster and Gary Harrington. So it’s back to the Drawing board for the Intermediate management and they will now look to next season to get things off to the winning ways.
MINOR NON_EXAM LEAGUE GAME V’s BISHOPSTOWN
On Saturday last our minor hurlers completed the league section of the Non Exam League with a fine win over Bishopstown. The team has now an unbeaten record in the league and have qualified to meet Glen Rovers or Inniscarra in the final.
Last Saturdays game was played in the near perfect conditions in Bishopstown and both sides served up an entertaining hours hurling. Both teams started well and there was nothing between the sides in the opening half each matching score for score. Raymond Keohane, Peter Ronayne and Tony Murphy adding points to the scoreboard for Carrig and at half time it looked to be anybody’s game. Carrigaline started the second half well and a well-taken goal from full forward Timmy Kenneally after some hard work by Paul Campbell edged the Carrig lads ahead. Carrig started to dominate in all sections of the field and were hurling well. Another goal from a free by Tony Murphy sealed Bishopstown fate and kept Carrigs unbeaten win intact. Final Score Carrigaline 2-12 Bishopstown 0-8 points
MINOR NON EXAM LEAGUE HURLING FINAL V’s GLEN ROVERS
On Saturday evening the Minor hurlers were looking to keep their unbeaten record so far this year in the final of group one in the Non exam league. The opponents were the Glen who 2 weeks previous were beaten by Carrigaline in the league by 3 goals. The Carrig side was well aware of the danger their opponents could cause and were well up for this game. In a thrilling opening half it was the Blackpool side that took the early advantage with two fine points from play. The Carrig full back line was finding it hard to come to grips with the fast pace of the Glen full forward line. A pointed free from Joe Moran who on the day put in a Man of the Match performance reduced the deficit to a point. Immediately the Glen replied with a point, which could have been a certain goal, only for a last minute interception from Full back John Walsh. At the other end of the field it was Timmy Kennelly who was causing the problems for the Full Back line and his effort, after a fine solo run, was saved well by the Glen Keeper. The Glen slotted over four unanswered points with 5 minutes left in the first half. Carrig needed to get scores quickly if they wanted to stay in the game and this was delivered through a fine goal from Kennelly who blasted the Glen net with an outstanding goal, 2 points from Stephen Corcoran and a point from Mitch Cuddihy leveled the scoring. Carrig were well on top now and were feeling confident but two points from the Glen on the stroke of half time put them slightly ahead. Half time score Carrigaline 1-4 Glen Rovers 0-9. If Carrigaline were to win this game they needed every single player on the field to give 110% in the second half and after only a minute of time gone in that half their hearts were broken, the Glen were awarded a controversial penalty and this was converted superbly by Cork minor player Patrick Horgan. Carrigs heads immediately fell and the Glen tapped over 2 unanswered points and soon Carrig found the sliothar in the back of the net again and Carrig were climbing an uphill battle. Points from Paul Campbell and Stephen Corcoran kept Carrig in contention and an excellent converted goal from Corcoran raised the Carrigs side performance. But the Glen yet again got another 2 points, which they did so well throughout the game, match Carrig score for score and get the important ones when they so dearly needed them. Carrigaline are to thank goalkeeper Shane Barry who denied the Glen 3 certain goals. At full time Carrigaline were beaten on the scoreline Glen Rovers 2-16 Carrigaline 2-8.

Boys Ages 10 & Under
The football training was disrupted last weekend due to the Feile matches being played, but the hurling training did go ahead on Sunday morning..

In the last round of games played by the U-10 s in the South East U-10 Football League, they had mixed fortunes with 1 Win, 1 Draw & 1 Loss.
Results were a win against Valley Rovers 2, a draw with Sliabh Rua and a loss to Valley Rovers 1. As this competition is progressing, it s clear to see that the U-10 Footballers are continuously improving.

Wednesday June 8th the Under 10 - Under 7 hurlers travelled to Ballincollig for Hurling Challenge matches. Ballincollig had two teams of each age group, while Carrig had one, with each Carrigaline team playing both teams. Some great matches were played.
The under 7’s & 8’s played very well and were much stronger than Ballincollig, winning all their matches.
The under 9’s, although playing with great heart and determination were unable to get the better of a strong Ballincollig side.
The under 10’s having been beaten in their opening match, settled down and rallied to overcome their opponents in the second game.
Overall it was a great night of competition and very positive signs for the Street League hurlers.
Thanks to all the parents that helped to transport the players to Ballincollig and also the mentors involved in organising the teams for the Match.

On Sunday 19th Tracton brought a selection of U-10 & U-7 hurlers to Carrigaline for a number of games. Carrigaline had two U-7 teams. The first team was very strong and won well.
The second game was much closer but Carrigaline held on for a win here, also.
The U-10 match began fairly even, however Carrigaline made more of their scoring chances and were winners of this game.

County U-12 Football Final. 11/06/05

Carrigaline ( 2-4) V Douglas (1-12).

Carrigaline U-12 footballers quest for county honours this year fell just short on Saturday afternoon when they met a much stronger Douglas team on the day. Carrigaline were hit on the morning of the match by the withdrawal of two players due to illness and this seemed to unsettle the lads. They found the going tough from the throw in. Douglas piled on the pressure in the first 20mins and were 8pts to 2pts ahead. They could have been more ahead only for some fine goalkeeping by Eoin Moynihan. Carrigaline came fighting back before half time and two good goals from John O’Keeffe had the lads level. A great point from Eoin O’Donovan had them one point ahead at the break.
The second half belonged to Douglas and attack after attack finally paid off when they eventually got the better of Carrig’s man of the match, goalie, Eoin Moynihan. Eoin pulled off two fantastic saves that would grace any stage. The better team work of the Douglas lads saw them stay ahead to the finish despite the courageous efforts of the Carrig lads to claw back the deficit.
This bunch of lads have given us great enjoyment throughout the year on their way to the final. Heads up lads, we will be back, ye have done, yourselves, your mentors, your families and your club proud.

Panel: J. O’Keeffe, A. O’Reilly, M. Quinn, P. Ahern, M. O’Grady, S. Dwane, E. O’Donnell. C.McSweeney, K. Kavanagh, E.Moynihan, E.O’Donovan, D.O’Brien, C.Cremin, M.Lynch, R.O’Shea, K.Conlon. J.Kind, S. Brophy, J. Buckley, B.Curran, M.Curtain, C.Ciggins, M.McIntrye, T.McSweeney, D. O’Sullivan, I.Silke, A.Thomas, D.Drinan, A.Lynch, B.Scully, A.O’Gorman.

Fe 12 City Hurling
Carrigaline (3-6) V Glen Rovers (5-8).

Played at Carrigaline Community School pitch on Tuesday June 7th Carrigaline rested a number of their first team players and made full use of their large panel. These lads put in a great effort only to fall short to a much stronger Glen team late in the second half. Most impressive on the night were Brian Curran, Andrew Thomas, Andrew O’Gorman, Cian Diggins and Michael McIntryre.

Fe 14 City Hurling
Carrig met St. Finbarrs at Carrigaline on Tuesday of last week and after a great performance ran out winners 2-15 to 3-4. Great defensive work by Sean Mellett, Cian Sisk and Michael Dwane laid the foundations for this victory. David Drake and Sean Conlon were outstanding throughout the game while Dylan O Keeffe, Wayne Bruton and Shane O Halloran played superbly in the forwards. It was a great team performance overall and ideal preparation for the forthcoming All-Ireland Feile competition.

Fe13 City Hurling
Carrigaline travelled to Passage on a perfect evening for hurling last Wednesday. Carrig meant business from the first whistle and defended well with the full back line in particular clearing the ball well. At the other end A. Cooney and S. Caffrey looked dangerous with L. O’Hanlon full of purposeful running and winning regular possession. Cooney and Caffrey both scored 1-1 in this period. However, the score of the day was reserved for D. Hickey, who won the ball in the half forward line, turned his man and with searing pace soloed towards the goal before finishing in style. Carrigaline were in a commanding position at half time, but Passage were to come out all guns blazing in the second half. The game turned into a hard fought contest with every ball in dispute. C. O’Flynn never took a backwards step in midfield and he was ably assisted by Philip Ahern and Cian Diggins. Passage were piling on the pressure at this point, but P. Conway and M. O’Hanlon made vital stops on the line to ensure that Carrig held on for a deserved draw This was a great performance of skill and courage. They can look forward to their next match with confidence.

Fe 12(2) City Hurling
Na Piarsaigh were the visitors to Carrigaline on Wednesday last and after a great game took the points back to the city. Carrig never gave up and battled all the way to the final whistle.

Fe 14 South-East Hurling
Carrigaline played host to Courcey Rvs in the under-14 BHL on Friday last and recorded a very facile win over a depleted opposition.
Our second team travelled to Minane Bridge on the same evening and despite a very brave performance went down to a strong Tracton side.

DO OR DIE FOR CARRIG INTERMEDIATE HURLERS
By Nathan wall PRO

On Wednesday night in Minane Bridge at 2000 the Intermediate hurlers play Ballygarvan in the losers round of the championship. It’s the final straw for both clubs and by the time this paper is published the players will be in the final few hours of preparation for one of the biggest local derby’s in a long time. Carrig’s preparation has been good with a lot of training put in and a few challenge match’s but will be without the services of Peter Murphy who has just recovered from an injury, Philip Ahern injured and Wesley O’ Brian exam tied. With all the signals suggesting that this will be a cracker it is too close a game to call with both sides well up for this game. Hopefully by 2130 on Wednesday night the hurler’s will be in the next round of the championship against Kilbrittain. The past week was a quiet week with a lot of players getting a deserved break. On Saturday night the minor hurlers continued their outstanding un-beaten record by beaten Bishopstown in the Non- exam-hurling league and will now play either Innascarra or the Glen in the final. Report on that game will follow in next weeks article. Next weekend sees one of the busiest weekends in underage programmes coming to Carrigaline with the All Ireland feU14 hitting Carrigaline, hopefully the weather will be good and it will be a successful weekend for everyone involved. Also well done to Nicholas Murphy who played a leading role in Cork’s victory over Clare in the Munster Championship on Sunday in Ennis. And finally hard luck to the Carrigaline U12 football who were narrowly beaten by Douglas in the county final last Saturday, well done to everyone involved on a great performance throughout the campaign.
