Carrig Under 12’s in County Final

U-12 ‘A’ County Hurling Semi-Final.

Carrigaline 3-14 V Cloughduv 1-4.

Carrigaline U-12’s reached their second county final this year when they produced an excellent performance on Saturday evening last to overcome a good Cloughduv team. This great achievement must be noted, as they are the first team within the club to reach two premier county finals in the same year in hurling and football.
Carrigaline’s determination to play in the premier hurling decider was evident from early on as they tore into the game and never gave the opposition a chance as they raced into an early lead of 1-8 before Cloughduv registered a score. Robert O’Shea scorer of six of those points was a handful for the Cloughduv defenders throughout the hour. Kevin Kavanagh scored the goal with an unstoppable first time pull on the ball to the roof of the net. John O’Keeffe again turned in a solid performance and scored two brilliant points before the break one from an acute angle out near the touchline. Conor Cremin added a goal from close range and two more points from Michael Lynch who put in a great effort during the sixty minutes. The two Carrigaline corner forwards David Drinan and Darragh O’Sullivan played their part in helping to build up a good lead at half time. Carrigaline led at the break 2-10 to 1-1.
A comfortable lead on the re-start and the lads weren’t going to let this one slip. Playing against a stiff breeze they defended well as Cloughduv threw everything at them. Stephen Dwane had a marvellous game and along with Cillian McSweeney and Anthony O’Reilly stood firm and cleared their lines. Lynch was now at full forward and full of energy. After some tough tackling he answered in the best way possible by adding 1-2 during the second half. A further two points from Robert O’ Shea gave the lads a comfortable victory. Ian Silke, Eoin O’Donnell and Jamie Kind along with the five subs used all played their parts in what was an excellent squad performance.

Best of lucks lads and please support their tremendous efforts.

In the second half Douglas came back strongly but Carrig held firm. MINOR ‘A’ HURLERS LOSE DESPITE THRILLING REPLAY!!!!
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

MINOR ‘A’ HURLING REPLAY:
The Carrigaline Minor hurlers played Ballygarvan in the replay of the south east championship last Tuesday night in Shanbally and for the large attendance that was there they got their moneys worth. The previous week both teams drew after a late Ballygarvan goal and the replay was played with great heart and skill by both teams. Carrig got off to a magic start with a pointed free by Carrig’s top scorer on the night Simon O’ Brian, who caused major problems for the Ballygarvan full back line. The same player neatly broke down the Garvan defence to slot the sloithar to net to give carrig a 4-point advantage after four minutes. The game was played at a very fast rate with all players showing great hurling skill and heart and it was a pleasure to be a spectator. Ballygarvan soon got into the game with Cork Minor player Stephen White opening their scoring and soon later they had two points on the board before young Niall Coakley pointed superbly for Carrig, but this was to be Carrig’s final point of the first half. In the final 10 minutes of the 1st half Ballygarvan began to dominate and managed to score 1-3 in this period, only for a fine save by Carrig goalkeeper Michael Webb, Carrig would have been trailing by more. The start of the 2nd half was exactly the way Carrig started the first with O’ Brian breaking the Ballygarvan’s backs hearts with his fine runs and his sublime points which only put a point between the sides after 37 minutes. Carrig soon leveled it with a pointed free from Niall Coakley, who was standing in for the injured O’ Brian, who was constantly been fouled by the Ballygarvan full back, but looking back at the game it was the only option the player had cause if he had not done so, O’ Brian would have easily slotted at least 6 goals. With Dara Coughlan not giving White an inch of space and playing out of his skin, Carrig must have been confident. Further points from O’ Brian put Carrig a goal clear but the never say die attitude from both teams began to kick into action. A Ballygarvan goal and point put them slightly ahead after 44 minutes. This encounter really came to life at this stage and the supporters from both clubs were to witness one of the greatest hurling games the south east division has witnessed. Simon O’ Brian slotted two points over the bar for Carrig to put them a point ahead but with 12 minutes remaining it was Ballygarvan who rattled the net for the 3rd time to put the Garvan’s 2 points ahead and immediately after the puck out in superb style Brian got his 2nd goal. In the final few minutes both sides exchanged points to level proceedings and on the 30th minute, Carrig were awarded a free around 45m out, up stepped top scorer Simon O’ Brian to give Carrig the lead, but as a young player the pressure was to much and his shot sailed an inch wide to leave the score Carrig 2-10 Ballygarvan 3-7. Straight away the ref blew the whistle and this excellent game of hurling was going to extra time. In the first half of extra time O’ Brian pointed twice early on to give his team a two point advantage but as throughout the game Ballygarvan responded with two points to level. In the final minute of the first half Simon O’ Brian converted a free to give Carrig the smallest of margins at the break. The second half of extra time saw the Ballygarvan side dominate and take control with Carrig only scoring one point in that ten-minute spell. Players fitness was tested to the limit and it was a shame to see one of these sides losing and been knocked out of the championship as there is no back door in this grade. Ballygarvan held out to win by 3 points with them scoring 5 points in the final half. Credit has to be given to both clubs on this highly entertaining hurling which kept everyone on their toes, every player from both clubs did themselves proud and their clubs proud. The final score was Carrigaline 2-18 Ballygarvan 3-18. On the night Carrigaline were well served by Dara Coughlan, John Cowhig who had a fine game at center back, Patrick Donnelan, Niall Coakley and man of the match Simon O’ Brian who played superbly throughout both games.
U21 ‘A’ SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONSHIP:
In a one-sided first round clash of the south east U21 Championship, Carrigaline were totally outclassed by a better-balanced Valley Rovers in Ballygarvan last Thursday night. Carrig came into this game with a lot of confidence but it was evident from the early exchanges that they were going to be up against it. Valley began well and raced into an early lead of 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes with Carrig’s point coming from a pointed free by Barry O’ Keeffe. In the 17th minute Carrig keeper Eoin O’ Sullivan produced a save from the top drawer that denied Valleys a certain goal. With the Innashannon playing excellent hurling and with Cork Intermediate hurler Kevin Canty in flying form, Valley Rovers lead at half time by only 5 points with the scoreline reading 0-8 to 0-3, Carrig’s points coming from a free from Wesley O’ Brian and a superb acute angle point from O’ Keeffe. Carrig played some nice hurling in the first half and could have been closer at the interval only for some wayward striking of the sliothar. The second half saw Valley Rovers completely sail away from Carrig with Canty showing his true class of hurling, four unanswered points and the writing was on the wall for Carrig despite their best efforts. Carrigaline, to their credit, never gave up and points from Gary Harrington and Peter Murphy point two minutes from the end was Carrig’s final score of the match. Final score Carrigaline 0-5 Valley Rovers 1-15.

U-12’s Advance in County
U-12 County Hurling Quarter Final.

Carrigaline 3-14 Charleville 1-3.

Fresh from their victory in the South East final, this group of dedicated players cruised to a comfortable win at Carrigaline on Saturday last in glorious sunshine against a gallant Charleville team. Charleville tried everything but couldn’t match the Carrig effort on a very warm day.
The Carrigaline lads settled into the game early on and were 1-1 to the good after seven minutes, a goal from Dylan O’Brien and a point from Robert O’Shea. After ten minutes the visitors caught Carrigaline with a high ball into the goalmouth and the ball somehow nestled into the back of the net. With their tails up the visitors put Carrig’s defence under a lot of pressure, but with the outstanding Anthony O’Reilly marshalling his fellow defenders they held firm and kept the opposition at bay. O’Reilly with his excellent ability to read the game has been rock solid throughout the campaign.
Rob O’Shea was again in fine form and he cracked home a brilliant goal from 20 metres after being set up with a well executed handpass from Kevin Kavanagh. Two more points before the break from Eoin Moynihan and O’Shea had the lads ahead at the break 3-3 to 1-1.
The second half belonged to the home team as they hurled Charleville off the pitch with some excellent first time hurling. John O’Keeffe dominated the full back position with some great long clearances up the field and he was ably assisted by Eoin O’Donnell, Jamie Kind, Cillian McSweeney and Stephen Dwane.
Michael Lynch moved to the middle of the pitch at the break and along with Michael O’Grady worked hard to keep a good supply of ball going into the forwards who in turn made good use of the quality ball, knocking over eleven points during the second half with Kavanagh, O’Brien, Moynihan and O’Shea all hitting the target.
Ian Silke, Kevin Conlon and Brian Curran tried hard along with subs Philip Ahern, Michael McIntyre, Andrew Thomas, and Darragh O’Sullivan.
They will now play Bandon or Cloughduv in the Semi-Final on Saturday next. Check notice boards for time and venue.
Best of lucks lads and please support their tremendous efforts.

The under 14 footballers recorded two good victories recently in the SE Under 14 Football League.
On Friday July 8th they visited Ballinspittle and came away with the points following a comprehensive victory over the home team, Courcey Rvs. In a great team performance Wayne Bruton, Liam O Regan and David Spillane were the players who led the way.
On Friday of last week Valley Rvs. were the visitors to Carrigaline. This was a much more competitive game than the previous week and Valleys were full value for their half-time lead of four points. However Carrig turned it around in the second half and played some excellent football to triumph on a scoreline of 8 – 18 to 3 – 10. Michael O Donovan, David Spillane, Wayne Bruton and Dylan O Keeffe were superb in a great second-half performance.

PREMIER MINOR HURLERS STAGE BRAVE COMEBACK
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

PREMIER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
Fourteen-man Carrigaline produced the comeback of the season to overcome a strong Charleville side in the Ulster Bank Premier Minor hurling championship at Blarney on Tuesday 12th July. This was hurling at its very best and after Carrigaline’s Joe Moran saw red for a late challenge in the 42nd minute when his side trailed by six points the north cork club looked home and hosed. Then the Carrig side showed the heart and talent of the team and every single player raised their game with Tony Murphy and Paul Campbell outstanding in the final ten minutes to seal the game for Carrigaline. But on saying this it was a game that Carrig were very lucky to win and must seriously up their performance for the next round. The first half belonged to Charleville as their center forward ran the show. The winners found it hard to find their scoring range and Charleville with 2 comfortable goals led by 2-5 to 1-4 at the interval. Carrigaline looked faced with a mammoth task when referee Peter Downey had little option but to show Moran a red card but the Carrig team as a unit rose to the challenge. Charleville looked comfortable when leading by six points but two blistering goals in as many minutes by Raymond Keohane and Craig Neville rocked the north cork club and Carrig took over from here. Three points from Tony Murphy and two points from Paul Campbell finished the Carrigaline rout as Charleville were left bewildered at the final whistle. On the night Carrigaline were well served by Jason Kidney, Alan Noonan, Ray Keohane, Timmy Kenneally and Craig Neville. Final score Carrigaline 3-11 Charleville 2-10. Carrigaline now await the draw for round four where they wait anxiously for their next opponents. On Friday night the premier minor team continued their success with a good win over another north cork club Mallow.
MINOR ‘A’ SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONSHIP:
A 65th minute goal by Cork minor Stephen White gave Ballygarvan a second chance against Carrigaline in the opening round of the South East Minor ‘A’ hurling Championship which was played at Shanbally on Wednesday night. This thoroughly enjoyable game had the clubs tied three times, including at half time. Carrigaline fielded their second minor side in two days, hoping to produce the same performance that beat Charleville the night before. They clung to a three/four point lead in the last quarter, but eventually succumbed after their midfielder Robert Foley got a straight red card in the 60th minute as they led 1-11 to 0-10. In added time of five minutes it was then the Garvan’s scored a goal and a point to level proceedings for the last time. But, prior to all the late drama the spotlight had shone on Carrig’s top scorer, young Simon O’ Brien, the 15 year old contributing 10 points out of 1-11 was deserving of a standing ovation, a she kept his side a step ahead of Garvans throughout, with his accuracy both from play and placed balls. It was Ballygarvan who opened the scoring, but Carrig’s Niall Coakley gave his side a great start one minute later, when he grabbed Robert Foley’s free, before unleashing a pile driver to the back of the net. O’ Brien got his first score on the 7th minute and after this Ballygarvan replied with 3 unanswered points to level the game after twenty minutes. Three on the trot from o’ Brien replied equally from the Garvan’s to leave the score at half time 1-5 to 0-8. After an early exchange of scores, Carrig claimed territorial advantage to forge 1-10 to 0-9 in front by the 50th minute. Ballygarvan were unlucky soon after, as they hit a couple of bad wides and also see a close in shot rebound off the cross-bar. Then after another exchange of points, we saw outstanding keeper Michael Webb save from Ballygarvan’s center back 20m free before Carrig were reduced to 14men and then a great move out of defence saw White save his side. Final score 1-11 a piece.
INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP REPLAY:
A Superbly- orchestrated second half goal-rush in the space of eleven minutes powered Glanmire to victory and left Carrigaline pondering ruefully on what might have been in Saturday’s Evening Echo cork county IFC second round replay at Church Road. Carrigaline were the dominant force in the opening proceedings but the ease in which they allowed Glanmire to gain the initiative after the changeover will haunt them for sometime. Playing very slick football, Carrig opened their account with a Barry O’ Keeffe pointed free after hard work by Elliot O’ Keeffe but this score was soon equalized at the other end. A fifth minute wonder goal by John Mullaney, who superbly saw the keeper off the line, and soon later Mullaney pointed superbly for Carrig after a great pass from Eoin Murphy, Carrig lorded the free-flowing opening sequences in a most impressive manner. Glanmire managed to stay in touch with well taken points and long range frees. Carrig at this stage of the game were playing with some extreme confidence and could have been further ahead only for some poor shot attempts. With Daniel Twomey causing major hassle for the Glanmire full back, his two corner forwards Barry O’ Keeffe and John Mullaney were picking up a lot of breaking ball and setting up scores and a late burst from Carrigaline which saw Twomey, Peter Murphy and Eoin O’ Sullivan point for Carrig, Carrigaline went into the break leading by five points on the score line Carrigaline 1-6 Glanmire 0-4. Midfielder Eoin Murphy gave Carrig the dream start to the second half when he furthered the gap to six points. Taking full advantage of Carrigaline’s weaknesses at the back, Glanmire with two snap goals by both corner forwards in the space of 3 minutes, came thundering back to level the game in the 38th minute. In a stunning turnaround and with their confidence now soaring, the Riverstown side crashed another goal to the back of the net and with two pointed frees they had reversed the scoring in their favor to a five point advantage. It was now up to Carrig to put the game to Glanmire and they sure did. Carrig rallied magnificently and a wonder goal from wing forward Ken O’ Keeffe in the 53rd minute left only a single point between the sides after his younger brother Barry converted a free. At this stage of the game the players fitness was really told and credit must be given to both sides who played the whole game at full pace and entertained the crowd with a tremendous game. It was anybody’s game at this stage and it was Glanmire who made the first constructive push with two points in quick succession but the Carrig men responded with two of their own from O’ Keeffe (snr) and Mullaney. In the final few minutes Carrig had what seemed to be a clear penalty decision thrown out the window after the Glanmire keeper literally jumped on top of Nicholas Murphy after he was through on goal. In injury time Carrig agonizingly failed to get on level terms and two points in the final seconds from Glanmire sealed their excellent victory, which broke the Carrig teams hearts. Final score Carrigaline 2-11 Glanmire 3-11.

SUPER TWELVES

Fe 12 C South-East Hurling Final Carrigaline 10 - 4 Tracton 1 - 0

At Shanbally on Monday evening last in Mediterranean-type weather conditions Carrigaline met near neighbours and great rivals Tracton in the final of the Carrigdhoun Under 12 C Hurling League. When the two teams met at an earlier stage of the competition Tracton emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins. Another close game was expected with the Carrig boys confident that they could reverse the result.
The early exchanges were even enough with both teams threatening to score. Carrig were first on the scoreboard with a point by Conor Gould. Minutes later the same player gathered a ball about 30 metres out and sent a rocket of a shot to the back of the Tracton net. It was the perfect start and Carrig built on their lead when full-forward Anthony O Donnell, who tormented the Tracton backs throughout, raced clear to kick a goal in the 12th minute. Conor Gould converted a free and Anto was in for his second goal when the Tracton backs were slow to clear their lines.
When Tracton did threaten they found the Carrig backs in uncompromising mood. Shane Griffin was soundness personified in goal while the full-backline of Killian O Mahony, Robert Foster and David O Shea gave nothing away. Shane Griffin was excellent in the pivotal position while his half-back partners Killian McIntyre and Kevin O Connell let nothing past. Killian was especially outstanding making some great clearances and setting up many attacks.
The forwards were a constant threat to the Tracton goal with corner-forwards David O Donovan and David Canty lending great support to team captain Anthony O Donnell. Centre-forward Jamie Depuis was using his strength to great effect and was ably assisted by Alan Courtney and Aidan O Flynn. Aidan landed a great point in the 20th minute and five minutes later Anthony O Donnell completed his hat-trick with another kicked effort. Tracton registered their only score on the stroke of half-time. The interval scoreline of 4-3 to 1-0 did not really reflect Tracton’s brave efforts in the first period.
In the second half Carrig got completely on top due to the skilled and forceful play of their mid-field pairing of Conor Gould and Peter Mullane who supplied plenty of possession to the forwards. Anto struck for his fourth goal after two minutes and a minute later super-sub Kevin Martin was on hand to score the first of his two goals.
Conor Gould scored another 2 goals and a point while substitute Jason Brady completed the scoring with a goal in the 26th minute.
The other subs on the night were David O Callaghan, Cian Lynch and Darragh Corcoran . Derry Gregg and Eoin Buckley completed the panel while Brian Lynch and Kevin Harrington were absent due to holidays. Well done lads on a wonderful performance.
Following the game the trophy was presented to team captain Anthony O Donnell by the Chairman of the Carrigdhoun Juvenile Board, Pat Moran, to the delight of the Carrig supporters.

Panel; Shane Griffin, Killian O Mahony, Robert Foster, David O Shea, , Shane Griffin, Killian McIntyre, Peter Mullane, Kevin O Connell, Alan Courtney, Conor Gould, Anthony O Donnell, David Canty, Aidan O Flynn, David O Callaghan, Daragh Corcoran, Jamie Depuis, Kevin Martin, David O Donovan, , Cian Lynch, Jason Brady, Derry Gregg, Eoin Buckley.

Fe 12 B South-East Hurling Final Carrigaline 4 – 12 Ballinhassig 3 – 6

The second game at Shanbally on Monday last was the final of the premier Carrigdhoun under-12 hurling competition between Carrigaline and the great hurling stronghold of Ballinhassig. When the two teams met earlier in the league they had a close competitive game. The final didn’t disappoint and the exchanges kept the large attendance well entertained.
The issue was in doubt well into the second half with little separating the teams and the lead having changed hands on several occasions. About ten minutes from the end, Robert O Shea, who was outstanding throughout, hit a brilliant ground stroke from about 20 metres which found the corner of the Ballinhassig net and from then on there was only going to be one winner as Ballinhassig wilted and Carrig added another 1 – 3 without reply.
Carrigaline got the best possible start when Kevin Kavanagh goaled in the first five minutes. Ballinhassig replied with a point before Carrig stretched their lead with points from Dylan O Brien and Robert O Shea (free). A feature of the game was Robert’s unerring accuracy from placed balls and play, finishing with a total of 1 - 7.
Ballinhassig got back into the game when a long-range free found the net. Carrig responded with points from Michael O Grady and Robert O Shea before Ballinhassig’s best player, Michael Collins found the net following a great stop by Carrig keeper Eoin O Donovan.
Killian Kavanagh notched another goal and a point before half-time but Ballinhassig responded with a string of points to leave the interval score at 2 – 5 each and everything to play for.
Carrig began the second half with two quick points from Robert O Shea but Ballinhassig were not slow to respond and notched 1 – 1 to lead by two points.
However with the Carrig half-backline of Jamie Kind, Cillian McSweeney and Stephen Dwane now beginning to dominate, and midfielders John O Keeffe and Michael Lynch playing strongly the tide was turning in Carrig’s favour. A point from excellent wing-forward Michael O Grady and a successfully converted 65 from Cillian McSweeney tied up the scores. Shortly afterwards came Robert O Shea’s decisive strike. Another goal from Dylan O Brien and three points from Robert sealed a magnificent win.
This was a great team performance with every player giving their all and contributing to a memorable win over a gallant Ballinhassig side.
Following the game , Pat Moran, chairman of the Carrigdhoun Juvenile Board, presented the cup to captain Cillian McSweeney.

Panel: Eoin O Donovan, Darragh O Sullivan, Anthony O’Reilly, Eoin O Donnell, Jamie Kind, Cillian McSweeney Stephen Dwane, John O Keeffe, Michael Lynch, Robert O Shea, Eoin Moynihan, Michael O Grady, Dylan O Brien, Kevin Kavanagh, Conor Cremin, Ian Silke, Brian Curran, Kevin Conlon, Philip Ahern, Jamie Buckley, Michael Curtin, Cian Diggins, Michael McIntyre, Andrew Thomas, David Drinan, Aaron Lynch, Stephen Brophy.

Under 12 Hurlers on the Double

Following victories in their respective semi-finals on Monday last the Under 12 B and C hurlers have reached the South East Finals which will be played on Monday next, probably at Ballygarvan, commencing at 6.45p.m.
Both semi finals were played in Carrigaline before a very good attendance. The large and appreciative crowd were treated to some wonderful hurling with the C semi-final in particular keeping the crowd entertained right to the final whistle.

Fe 12 B South-East Hurling semi-final

Carrigaline 1-9 V Courceys 0-7.

Carrigaline had to dig deep to reach the final of this years South-east competition when they were pushed all the way by a very good Courcey Rovers team. The lads hurled well below par for most of the match and had to rely on some good individual performances from John O’Keeffe, Anthony O’Reilly, Jamie Kind and Robert O’Shea, scorer of eight excellent points, to see them run out winners on a score line of 1-9 to 7pts.
Carrigaline opened the scoring with two good points and went further ahead with a goal from Dylan O’Brien who tried hard all evening. Courceys came back into the match with three unanswered points and almost went ahead before the break when they struck the crossbar from a close in free. Another two Carrigaline scores stretched the lead to four points at half-time.
Courceys piled on the pressure throughout the second half and only for some excellent defending and a number of wides by the visitors we would have been in big trouble.
Robert O’Shea broke Courcey’s hearts when he went on two solo runs to score twice in five minutes. A long range pointed free by man of the match John O’Keeffe gave the Carrig lads breathing space and they held on to win by 5pts.
The final is fixed for Monday night next July 11th where they will play Ballinhassig. Again all support is required and welcome.

Fe 12 C South-East Hurling semi-final

Carrigaline 7-2 Ballygarvan 5-3

The second game at Carrigaline on Monday night was a thriller and kept the attendance on their toes right to the end. Two evenly matched teams gave it their all in a titanic struggle and the issue remained in doubt up to the final minute. A devastating five minute spell in the first half saw Carrig streak ahead at the interval on a scoreline of 3-1 to 0-1. Two goals from full-forward Aidan O Flynn and a wonderful first-time effort from midfielder Peter Mullane were the difference between the teams at half-time.
Ballygarvan came out with all guns blazing in the second half and laid siege to the Carrig goal. Some heroic defending kept the Garvans at bay with full-back Robert Foster being especially defiant in the face of incessant pressure. Finally the pressure told and Bally got through for two goals. However Carrig responded and driven on by Shane Griffin and Brian Lynch in the half-backline the forwards began to make inroads in the Ballygarvan defence. Anthony O Donnell was particularly prominent in the Carrig response. Goals from David Canty (2) and Conor Gould stretched the Carrig lead. Some great saves by the Ballygarvan keeper kept them in the game and inspired their forwards to get the scores which brought them to within two points of Carrig with a few minutes remaining. Carrig rallied once more and substitutes Daragh Corcoran and Jamie Depuis got the clinching scores to put an end to the brave Ballygarvan challenge. The team can now look forward to the final v Tracton on Monday next.

SOUTH EAST U14C HURLING LEAGUE

Ballinhassig were the visitors to Carrigaline on Wednesday of last week. Ballinhssig started the better of the two teams and took an early lead. However, Carrigaline responded and had a spell of dominance themselves, but they didn’t convert their possession into enough scores. A Cooney picked off a couple of points and Carrig also found the net from a long range shot.
Ballinhassig increasingly began to find space in a stubborn Carrig defence and in the second half scored a few late goals to win the match comfortably. Carrig had some strong performances on the night in M O Reilly, L O Hanlon, E Horgan, A Cooney and D Hickey.

BURKE RESCUES CARRIG WITH SPECTATCULAR GOAL!!!
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP V’s GLANMIRE:
A moment of pure genius by Carrigaline in the 55th minute that yielded a superb comeback goal was one of few talking points in the Evening Echo Intermediate football championship at Church Road on Saturday night. In a game that was tough and physical some players will consider themselves fortunate that referee Donal Fleming was in lenient mood. You would have to give credit to Carrigaline as they looked dead and buried when trailing by four points with less than five minutes remaining, but they dug deep and fully deserved a second bite of the cherry. Glanmire kicked themselves into a two point lead after seven minutes and were dominating exchanges before the energetic Barry O’ Keeffe finally got Carrigaline on the scoresheet in the 19th minute with a pointed free, after the hard working John Mullaney was fouled. Scoring by both sides was a rarity but Glanmire went 2 pints clear on the 26th minute. And following some intense Carrigaline pressure they slotted over point number two in the 29th minute from an Eoin O’ Sullivan forty-five who throughout the game was outstanding after receiving and early injury after a late tackle. On the stroke of half time the Glanmire keeper denied the on fire John Mullaney a certain goal with a super save. Carrig, who trailed 0-2 to 0-3 at the interval, knew that they had to step it up big time in the second half and they began brightly with a John Mullaney point in the 37th minute leveled the game and this point was set up by an excellent pass by Ken O’ Keeffe, and four minutes later Mullaney edged Carrig ahead for the first time in this game. Carrig were now playing well and dominated most play but should have been further ahead for all their hard work. Glanmire leveled the scoring on the 52nd minute from a forty-five. The Carrig management will have to be very happy with the full back lines defensive especially the outstanding performance of full back Neilly Hayes who throughout the game was excellent. Then, against the run of play, a bad error by Carrig keeper Tony Harris, allowed the Glanmire corner forward in to complete the easy task of fisting the ball into an empty net. Carrig supporters and management were convinced that it was a square goal but to the delight of Glanmire the Ref allowed the goal, the evergreen Pat Ryan pointed for Glanmire straight away and the writing looked on the wall for Carrig. Then came a move that would have graced any pitch in Ireland, which saw Carrigaline grab a lifeline. The sweeping move began when Neilly Hayes got possession from his own 20-yard line and passed to Eoin Murphy who in turn found Mullaney. Mullaney then pinpointed a pass to Ken O’ Keeffe who played an assist to the in rushing Tom Burke. Everyone from Carrigaline thought Burke would get a nosebleed and blast wide but we were soon to witness one of the best strikes we may possibly see in our lives. The Kerry native unleashed a powerful shot which rifled the top corner of the net. At first there was shock that Tom Burke had scored such a superb goal, then after a slight pause, the excitement that Carrig might level this game was expressed. In the dying seconds Eoin Murphy held his nerve to kick the equalizing point as the Glanmire players looked shell-shocked. Both teams have major improvements to do if they wish to reach a county final. The replay will more than likely take place on July 16th / 17th.
Best for Carrigaline on the night was-Killian Forbes, Neilly Hayes, Kieran Blake. Eoin O’ Sullivan and John Mullaney.

JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS BOW OUT AFTER DISMAL ENCOUNTER
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

JUNIOR ‘A’ FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
Last Saturday evening saw the eagerly awaited Junior football game between Carrigaline and Ballymartle in greasy conditions in Minane Bridge. In a game that overall was a dismal affair Ballymartle defeated Carrig by 4 points and was their first victory against Carrigaline in Junior football Championship in 3 years. It was the Riverstick side that opened the scoring with a pointed free after 2 minutes. As players from both teams were finding it hard to get to grips with the conditions Carrig could have put a few scores on the board but failed to do so after hard work by Marc Doody who was causing hassle for the Ballymartle defence but he was soon rewarded with a well taken pointed free to level proceedings. This upped the sides performance and the team began to settle with Richard Jenkinson and Andy O’ Keeffe dominating. After some fine play from the Carrig backs the ball was worked well up the field and found its way to Kyle Meehan who put Carrig ahead by a point. With conditions worsening minor errors on the Carrig team gifted Ballymartle an equalizing point after 15minutes. The Ballymartle side was soon a point ahead but Carrig could have been a goal down only for a fine save from Michael Webb. A well worked point O’ Keeffe, Ollie Conlon and Kyle Meehan ensured that Gary McGovern had an easy task of leveling the game yet again. After 25minutes of action both teams were level pegging but it was carrig who took a slight lead going in at the break due to further points from the boot of John Winters and Marc Doody (0-2). Half time score Carrigaline 0-6 Ballymartle 0-4. It was now in Carrigs hands if they wanted to continue their championship campaign and needed 110% from every player but it was Ballymartle who got the first score of the 2nd half. Throughout the second half Carrig had most of the possession but failed to make use of it and allowed the riverstick side back into the game and were soon level again with six points a piece. In the second half Carrig only managed to score a single point that was converted by Winters. Ballymartle were soon reduced to 14 men and this seemed to up the games tempo. Some superb point scoring from Ballymartle kept putting them into the next round of the championship and in the dying few minutes of the game a pointed free ensured that this game was over for Carrigaline. Final score was Ballymartle 0-11 Carrigaline 0-7.
OTHER NEWS AND RESULTS:
Next Saturday, July 9th sees the Junior ‘A’ Hurlers play local rivals Ballygarvan in the Quarter Final of the South East Championship in Crosshaven @ 1830. This should be a thrilling encounter and Carrig will be hoping to make amends for the defeat in the Intermediate championship recently. The Premier Minor Footballers traveled to Togher last week to play their first league game since the leaving cert has finished and suffered their first league defeat against a very strong Barrs side. Best of luck also to the Premier Minor hurlers who play Charleville in Blarney next Tuesday 12th July in the opening round of the championship. And lastly, Congratulations and best wishes to Nicholas Murphy and Joe Moran who are involved in next weekends Munster football final in Pairc Ui Choimh. Nicholas has been on the Senior panel for a number of years but has been playing outstanding football in the past couple of months and lets hope he can add another Munster medal to his collection, Joe Moran is on the Cork Minor panel and is a future prospect and we wish both the players the best of luck on this important day.

JUNIOR ‘A’ HURLERS REACH SOUTH EAST SEMI FINAL AFTER SUPERB VICTORY.
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

JUNIOR ‘A’ HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
Carrigaline Junior Hurlers had a well-merited 1-17 to 0-7 victory over Ballygarvan in the quarter final of the South East Championship. Carrig opened in impressive style and Evan O’Sullivan had a goal and two pointed frees on the board before Ballygarvan had there opening score in the fourth minute. Evan was in great scoring form both from placed balls and open play and ended with an impressive tally of 1-7.
Noel Cooney pointed a long range free in the fifth minute, which was cancelled out, by a Ballygarvan point from play. With the half back line of Colin Tuohy, Noel Cooney and Alan Noonan well on top further points from Evan O’Sullivan (2), Philip Ahern and Barry O’Keeffe left the score Carrigaline 1-7, Ballygarvan 0-3 by the 15th minute.
Ballygarvan came more into the game in the closing stages of the first half but Carrig had a comfortable lead at half time 1-10 to 0-5.
Ballygarvan opened the better in the second half and two pointed frees reduced the margin to 6 points by the fifth minute. However a fine save by goalkeeper Shane Barry allied to the fine play of Sean Corkery and Stephen O’Regan in midfield saw Carrig regain the momentum with two frees from Evan O’Sullivan and a point from play by Craig Neville had Carrig 1-13 to 0-7 ahead entering the last quarter.
Two points from the evergreen Philip Ahern and a point each from the two Peter Murphy’s saw Carrig run out winners by 1-17 and 0-7 and qualify for the semi-final where they will meet the winners of Tracton and Kinsale.

Team: Shane Barry, Jason Kidney, John Dineen, Richard Jenkinson, Colin Tuohy, Noel Cooney (0-1), Alan Noonan, Sean Corkery, Michael O’Sullivan, Evan O’Sullivan (1-7), Peter Murphy snr. OTHER NEWS:
On Saturday night the intermediate footballers play Glanmire in the replay of the Intermediate football championship in church road. After the first game which had a dramatic finish with a superb Tom Burke goal both teams will give it everything as this is a do or die game. Carrigaline have prepared well for this game with a number of challenge games and hard training sessions and will be looking to Neill Hayes, Eoin O’ Sullivan, Peter Murphy, Nicholas Murphy, Ken O’ Keeffe and John Mullaney for big performances if they wish to continue in the championship. The premier Minors play Charleville on Tuesday 12th in Blarney in the opening round of the hurling championship. Preparation has been good but the team has suffered two major injury blows in the past week with Peter Ronayne (wrist) and Conor Hurley (shoulder) but the team is still very strong and hopefully will get over the first round. Congratulations to Joe Moran and Neilly O’ Keeffe who were involved with the Cork minor football team that denied Kerry 5 in a row in the Munster Final on Sunday 10th. And lastly commiserations to Nicholas Murphy who was midfield for Cork in their defeat to Kerry in the Munster final in excellent conditions in Pairc Ui Choimh, Nicholas had an excellent game for Cork and carried cork through the game and if Cork had won I’m sure he would have got man of the match.
