Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

South East U 14 C Hurling Championship

Carrigaline travelled to Crosshaven in the first round of the championship on Monday Sept 19th. Carrigaline were the deserving winners on the night and played well as a unit with everyone playing their part in a great team performance.

City U13 C Hurling Championship

Passage came to Carrigaline for the first round of the City Championship on Saturday last. The Carrig lads stuck well to their task in the opening period and only conceded 2 points. A well taken Gary. Murphy goal gave Carrig a one point lead going into the second half. A Passage goal soon after the restart gave the home side something to think about, but a well taken Robert O Shea goal gave Carrig a timely boost. Chris Allen, Ciaran Malone and Peter Bresnan made life difficult for the Passage forwards as the whole side worked very hard. In a tight, low scoring game there was never going to be much between the sides and Carrig held their nerve to record an exciting one point victory.

SE FE 16 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL
CARRIGALINE .V. BALLINHASSIG

Last Thursday night 23rd September, Carrigaline travelled to Ballinhassig to play the Semi-Final in the South East Football Championship.
Ballinhassig were first to score with a point from a free. Carrig responded with points from Simon O’Brien and David O’Regan. Their mounting pressure on the Ballinhassig goalmouth got a deserved goal scored by Killian Kavanagh followed by a point from Niall Coakley who was making a welcome return to the panel. By half time Carrigaline led 1.04 to Ballinhassig’s 0.02 and seemed to be in a commanding position.
The second half saw Carrig quick on the attack and registering another point from Robert Foley. Ballinhassig responded with point after point while Carrigaline tried for goals and sent their shots wide. Another opportunity was saved by the goalkeeper and one wondered why they would not take their points. Then Ballinhassig got a penalty and quickly converted it into a goal. As the game progressed only a point separated the sides. Carrigaline as always under pressure started to respond and before long found the net thanks to Niall Coakley. Points followed from Eoin O’Sullivan, Simon O’Brien, Conor Hurley and David O’Regan.
The final score was Carrigaline 2.11 to Ballinhassig 1.06 and so Carrig advance to a final showdown with Sliabh Rua
Subs used were Tony O’Connor for Brian Twomey, Eoin Harrington for Killian Kavanagh, Kevin Ahern for Eoin O’Sullivan, David Manley for Kyle Kinsella and Shane Noonan for Brendan Cashman.
The panel for Carrigaline was James O’Reilly, Brendan Cashman, Darragh Coughlan, Brian Giltinan, Brian Twomey, Conor Hurley, Andrew O’Sullivan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Robert Foley, Tony Murphy, David O’Regan, Niall Coakley, Kyle Kinsella, Killian Kavanagh, Simon O’Brien, Stephen Power, David Manley, Jamie O’Sullivan, Michael O’Sullivan, Shane Noonan, Kevin Ahern, Tony O’Connor and Eoin Harrington.
SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONSHIP FE 16 FOOTBALL FINAL
CARRIGALINE .V. SLIABH RUA

VENUE Tracton 25th September 2005 REFEREE Brendan Keohan

Last Saturday Carrigaline travelled to Tracton to play Sliabh Rua in the Fe 16 South East Football Championship Final. It was only a few weeks since both sides had competed in the final of the South East Hurling Championship when Sliabh Rua were the victors. One could see from the pre match warm up Carrigaline were hungry for a win against their old rivals.
From the start Carrigaline put pressure on the Sliabh Rua goalmouth but their efforts went wide. Sliabh Rua started to push forward but the Carrigaline backs were blocking everything that came their way. A strong block was made by Brian Giltinan who sent the ball forward to David O’Regan and Carrigs’ first point was scored. Shortly afterwards a pass from David O’Regan to Niall Coakley and another score was notched up. Killian Kavanagh was strong in defence and cleared each ball he caught out to midfield. Although Sliabh Rua made some changes Carrigaline were ready for whatever came their way. They continued their attack on goal and found the back of the net before long. By half time the Carrigaline team led 2.05 to Sliabh Rua 0.00.
Having learned from the semi-final game Carrigaline knew they had to keep up the pressure for the second half, and they did so by dominating throughout the pitch. Sliabh Rua gained a few points from frees and pushed forward but their attempts on goal were dealt with capably by the Carrigaline keeper James O’Reilly.
Carrigaline competed for every ball. From 1 to 15 they all put in a great effort on the field. Carrigaline counter attacked with two points. Sliabh Rua again tested the Carrigaline goalkeeper who made a brilliant save. Although ahead Carrig still pushed forward. A pass from Tony Murphy to Simon O’Brien who had a clear run and was fouled resulted in a penalty for Carrigaline. Conor Hurley duly stepped up and gained another goal for Carrigaline. Sliabh Rua tried to counter attack but Carrigaline dominated play, and closed off any openings Sliabh Rua made. There was no return for Sliabh Rua and Carrigaline achieved a well deserved victory. The final score was Carrigaline 3.08 to Sliabh Rua 0.05.
Subs introduced were David Manley for Kyle Kinsella, Brendan Cashman for Eoin Harrington, Stephen Power for Eoin O’Sullivan, Jamie O’Sullivan for Simon O’Brien and Kevin Ahern for David O’Regan.
Pat Moran Chairman of the South East Board presented the Cup to Carrigaline Captain Niall Coakley and wished Carrigaline well in the County next Sunday.

PREMIER MINOR FOOTBALLERS EASE INTO NEXT ROUND
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

PREMIER MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
The premier minor footballers of Carrigaline eased into the next round of the Ulster Bank Premier Minor football championship with a comprehensive against Valley Rovers last Tuesday night in Ballygarvan. Both these teams met last year in the south east final with Valley Rovers winning by the smallest of margins but with both teams in the top grade this was sweet revenge for Carrig. Straight from the throw in Carrig had a dream start after midfielder Stephen O’ Regan won possession and sprinted from the center to kick over a sweet opening point. After 5 minutes cork Minor Fiachra Lynch registered Valleys first point of the game and he was Valleys main target man throughout the game. Both teams were accountable of some dreadful passing but as the nerves settled the skill of the players began to show. Carrig’s backs were been put under a lot of pressure but with Wesley O’ Brian and Jason Kidney in fine form Carrig were never going to be beaten and a Kidney break from the back line, which saw the player run from his own 13m line up to the Valleys 21m line, resulted in the player been fouled and Craig Neville slotted Carrig’s 2nd point of the day from the free. Throughout the game the Carrig lads were very confident under the high ball and the lead up to some of their points was excellent to watch. Valley Rovers were yet again penalized for a foul on Timmy Kennelly who was taken down inside the square after a superb solo run and Kennelly buried the resulting penalty to the back of the net and within two minutes Carrig had another goal after Paul Campbell crossed a high ball into the danger area and John Walsh fisted to the net for Carrig’s 2nd goal. With ten minutes left in the second half, Walsh pounced on a goalkeeping error and easily struck the ball to the net, Craig Neville picked up the all on the wing and went on a solo run and his rasping shot was saved by the Rovers keeper but he couldn’t hold onto the ball and Walsh punished him dearly for this, but it must be said that this goal was created by Ray Keohane who superbly plucked a high ball from the air. Further points from Neville and Kyle Meehan had Carrig well in the driving seat. The Innashannon side never gave up and tapped over 3 consecutive points to reduce the gap to 10 points at half time. Half time score Carrigaline 3-05 Valley Rovers 0-4. The second half really saw Carrig up their game and this half saw them score a total of 3-7. Just like the start of the first half Carrig immediately got a score after Kennelly slotted easily over the bar. But the Rovers never say die attend showed and they replied immediately with a superb point, Rovers were piling the pressure on the Carrig defence as they searched for a goal to bring them back into the game but the Carrig defence stood tall and denied the Rovers a chance to get back into the game. The game was wrapped up with 20 minutes remaining after Craig Neville attempted to kick a point but it fell short and as the Valleys Keeper tried to get a grip of the ball, he failed to keep the ball in this hands and dropped in behind the white line for Carrig’s fourth goal. A further brace of points form Meehan and Kennelley made it 4-10 to 0-5. The Carrig management brought on the 5 subs that were allowed and decided to take off the players who needed the rest but this didn’t stop them scoring more, and even half back Colin Touhy got in on the action with a superb point. Carrig’s display was rounded off with 2 goals from Kennelly and points from Cormac Crid Nolan and in the last minute Valleys got the goal they so badly needed at the start of the second half. Carrig now go into the next round of the championship and with Joe Moran and Peter Ronayne who should be available for the next game now available for selection the Carrig mentors will have some serious selection headaches. Well done to all involved. Final score Carrigaline 6-12 Valley Rovers 1-7
TEAM: M WEBB, J KIDNEY, R KEOHANE, K KELLEHER, W O’ BRIAN, A NOONAN (CPT), C TOUHY, S O’ REGAN, H COX, P CAMPBELL, K MEEHAN, C NEVILLE, T KENNELLY, J WALSH, C CRID NOLAN. UNDER 21 HURLING:
This Sunday sees the under 21 hurlers face Courcey rovers in the southeast semi final in Riverstick. After been beaten by a superb Valley Rovers side in the first round the lads have regrouped well and trained hard and had good wins against Shamrocks and Ballymartle but the game on Sunday will be a tough game to call. With the likes of Eoin O’ Sullivan, Andy o’ Keeffe, Gary Harrington, Wesley O’ Brian, Colin Lynch and a few handy minors Carrig should prove too strong. Hopefully by 1 o’ clock on Sunday they will be competing in a south east final. Best of luck to all involved.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING LEAGUE:
County finalist Nemo Rangers proved too strong for Carrigaline in this intermediate hurling game played in Carrigaline on Sunday last. While the opening exchanges were close Nemo always looked sharper and led at half time by 0-8 to 0-4. Two early goals in the second half by Nemo ended the game as a contest and despite the best efforts of Gary Harrington, Jimmy Murphy and Colin Lynch from Carrigaline, Nemo ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 2-13 1-9.
DR HARTY CUP:
Best of luck is extended to Carrigaline Community School who play their first Dr Harty Cup match against Thurles CBS in Fermoy next Wednesday @ 1400. It is the schools first time playing in this grade after winning the Senior B grade last year and are training very hard for this. The team mainly consists of Carrigdhoun players from Carrigaline, Shanbally, Tracton, Ballygarvan, Crosshaven and Riverstick. This also is great for the South East division as it shows the standard of hurling that is up and coming in our division. Best of luck to all involved from Carrigaline GAA Club.

CORCORAN BLASTS U21 HURLERS INTO SOUTH EAST FINAL
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

UNDER 21 SOUTH EAST SEMI FINAL:
A 58th minute free from Stephen Corcoran put Carrigaline through to the final of the south east U21 hurling final in a windy but excellent pitch in Belgooly on Sunday morning. The game was there for the taken with the sides level at 1-10 to 0-13 but Carrig pushed forward and won a vital free which Corcoran expertly converted. Throughout the game, a young Courceys team put the game to Carrig and led from the 4th minute up till the 55th minute. In a game that never really sparked only in the last 10 minutes, it was heart and pride from the Carrig team that paved the way for their victory. The swirling wind in Belgooly didn’t help either side and made shooting a tough task. Carrig were physically stronger but will be up against it when they play either Valley Rovers or Ballinhassig in the final. This was no means a convincing win but throughout the field Carrig won some of the smaller key battles. They dominated at midfield for the entire game where Mitch Cuddihy and Wesley O’ Brian both put in a match winning performance and both these players covered massive ground throughout the game. The half back line were put under a lot of pressure from the long puck outs from the Rovers keeper but with Ray Keohane, Colin Lynch and Gary Harrington all in fine form Carrig were never going to be beaten. Up front the move of Corcoran out to the half forward line worked wonders. He was non- existent in the first half but when moved out from the corner and given some room and a better supply of ball he took control of the game and all that Courceys could manage was t foul him. Courceys led at half time by 1-6 to 0-6. Carrig never really threatened the Courceys full back line in the opening half but scores from Gary Harrington, Corcoran and Craig Neville kept Carrig in the game. On the restart Carrig had a dream start with points from Michael O’ Sullivan and Corcoran but Courceys free taker kept them in the game with his excellent free taken. Corcoran hit 3 excellent frees while Couceys replied also with a pointed free. Carrigaline took the lead for the first time since the fourth minute with a Corcoran free but yet again Courceys kept the game alive with a pointed free in the final minutes. With 2 minutes remaining it looked as if it could be heading for either a replay or extra time before Stephen Corcoran spilt the posts with a pressure free to send Carrig into their first southeast final in nearly a decade. Final score Carrigaline 0-14 Courcey Rovers 1-10.

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

Under 13 Hurling Tournament

Carrigaline played in an U 13 tournament in Dicksboro Co. Kilkenny on Saturday last. The Carrig lads started particularly well and won their opening two games against Geraldines from Wexford and St. Marys from Clonmel. In the third game of the group stage Carrig were beaten by the eventual winners Dicksboro. Nevertheless, Carrigaline qualified for the semi final against Bishopstown. The city side raced into a two goal lead as Carrig were slow to start. The Owenabue side had it all to do in the second period and set about their business in a determined fashion. An excellent, spirited performance led to Carrig scoring 3 - 2 in the second fifteen minutes, but they had left themselves too much to do. Everybody enjoyed themselves on the day and all players in the squad played their part.

City Under 15 Hurling Championship
Carrigaline 3-11 Brian Dillons 3-5

On Saturday last Carrig played Brian Dillons in the first round of the U-15 city hurling championship at Carrigaline. Having met already this year in the league, with Carrig coming out on top in a close match, everybody was looking forward to what promised to be another tight affair and that’s the way things turned out.
Carrig started very well with a very good supply of ball coming in from the half-back line of James Crowley, Tony O Connor and Brian Twomey. Jason O Leary and Simon O Brien were outstanding in the middle of the field causing all sorts of problems to the Brian Dillons defence .The full forward line worked hard all day with each of them getting on the score sheet, Adrian Lynch 0-2, Brian Dorgan 0-1 and James Mc Carthy 0-1. Daniel Bagnall was playing in goal for the first time in two years and it looked like he had never left the position as he was inspired on the day. At half time Carrig led by 1-6 to 0-3 .
Brian Dillons were playing with the wind in the second half and they started well with a couple of points. The display by the full back line was very good on the day, the save that James O Shea made in the first half was top drawer stuff. Both corner backs Jamie Corcoran and Shane Noonan showed how much they have improved this year with excellent displays throughout the game. David O Regan and Eoin Conway both received knocks during the game but still both scored on the day as did Redvers Mc Grath 1-0 and Simon O Brien 2-04.
We will be playing Douglas in the next round and this will also be a close one to call. Keep an eye on the notice board for that fixture.

City Under 14 Football League

St. Finbarrs 2-15 Carrigaline 1-9

In this game played at Togher recently the home side came out on top following a disappointing display from the Carrig side.
At half-time the Barrs led by two points but following the changeover they really upped the ante and ran out comfortable winners in the end.
Best for Carrig on the night were S. O Halloran, C. Barry, S. Conlon and L. O Regan.
Carrig played way below their potential on this occasion and know it was a display best forgotten.

FE 16B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL

On Wednesday night of last week at Minane Bridge Carrigaline and Tracton played the South East Quarter Final in the Fe16B Football Championship. Tracton opened the scoring with a point, quickly followed by another from their midfielder. Carrigaline took a while to get into the game but after their first point coming from a shot from Tony Murphy, they were on their way. Simon O’Brien took a shot on goal which was saved by the Tracton goalkeeper but on the rebound he found the back of the net. Shortly afterwards David O’Regan scored a point as did David Manley. Kyle Kinsella converted the opportunities that came his way. By half time the score was Carrigaline 2.6 to Tracton 0.3.

The second half saw Carrig get early points from Simon O’Brien & David O’Regan. Carrigaline now pushed forward passing the ball well and showing some great teamwork. The points continued to come from Carrigaline namely Killian Kavanagh, Robert Foley and David O’Regan, Tracton’s only response being a point from a free. Carrigaline took some players off to give all their subs a run.
Carrigaline panel on the night was: James O’Reilly, Shane Noonan, Daragh Coughlan, Brian Twomey, Cian O’Sullivan, Conor Hurley, Andrew O’Sullivan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Tony Murphy, Robert Foley, David O’Regan, David Manley, Kyle Kinsella, Killian Kavanagh, Simon O’Brien, Jamie O’Sullivan, Michael O’Sullivan, Stephen Power, Kevin Ahern, Brian Giltinan, Brendan Cashman and Tony O’Connor.

U13 Hurling Radley Shield semi-final

Carrigaline 2-17 Mayfield 3-3

Mayfield were the visitors to Carrigaline in a hard fought encounter on Tuesday of last week. Carrigaline started well with Diarmuid Hickey striking the ball soundly off the ground into the corner of the net to give Carrig a deserved early lead. Defences were on top for the most part in the opening period and both sides went in at half time deadlocked at 1-3 apiece. Carrig increasingly got on top of their city rivals in the second period with Robert O Shea and Cillian McSuibhne finding their range and picking off their points. However, Mayfield struck back with two second half goals and Carrig needed to hold their nerve which they duly did to win by a comfortable margin. Carrig put in an excellent team performance over all with Luke O Hanlon, Kevin Kavanagh, Anthony O Reilly and Michael Lynch prominent in all Carrigaline’s good work.

U14C Football South East Championship

Carrigaline 5-8 Ballinhassig 6-5

Ballinhassig started the game the sharper of the two sides, but Carrig began to open up a lead until the game was held up due to a serious injury. Just as Carrig were beginning to get on top, star half back Cian Sisk suffered a bad injury in an unfortunate fall after making a trademark surging run.
Ballinhassig scored two quick goals at the start of the second half and it developed into a very exciting encounter as goals were scored at either end and the lead changed hands accordingly. Eric Calnan, Cian O Flynn and Martin O Reilly started to dominate in defence. Andrew Healy, Dylan O Keeffe, and Richard Duggan were always threatening in attack. The game was played at real Championship pace in the second half and was a great spectacle for the onlookers. Carrig will feel unlucky not to have won as they conceded a late goal to even up the scores. The match will be replayed at a later date and should be another exciting encounter.
The Carrigaline management and squad of players wish Cian a speedy recovery and the help of the referee and co-operation of Ballinhassig was appreciated.

CITY LEAGUE FE 16 FOOTBALL CARRIGALINE . V. BLACKROCK

Carrigaline travelled to Church Road last Friday night week to play Blackrock in the City League Fe 16 Football. Having just finished the Hurling Championship Carrigaline had little time to prepare for Football. Blackrock opened the scoring with an early goal, quickly followed by some points. Carrigaline responded with a goal from David O’Regan and points from David Manley, Conor Hurley and Eoin O’Sullivan. Then Blackrock got another goal to leave the half time score Blackrock 2.5 to Carrigaline 1.3.
In the second half a quick pass from midfield to Tony Murphy and a point was scored. Blackrock put pressure on the Carrigaline goal and James O’Reilly made a great save. Points continued for Blackrock and Carrigaline responded with a goal from Simon O’Brien and points from Eoin O’Sullivan and Tony Murphy. While Carrigaline tried to push forward Tony Murphy was fouled giving Carrigaline a penalty. It was expertly taken by Conor Hurley resulting in a goal. However Blackrock came out on top with the final score Blackrock 2.13 to Carrigaline 3.5.

CARRIGALINE GAA CLUB NEWS
BY NATHAN WALL PRO

The past couple of weeks have been hectic for all clubs in cork but at last for some clubs it is beginning to calm down a bit. For Carrigaline as a club, there are still a lot of trophies up for grabs with the Premier Minor Hurlers and Footballers, U21 A hurlers and Junior City footballers all in contention of bringing silver back to the club. The Minor footballers are preparing for a mouth- watering contest against fellow divisional club Valley Rovers in the opening round of the Ulster Bank premier minor football championship next Tuesday 13th September. Preparation for this game in my view has been excellent as the lads have had a few cracking and really entertaining games against the likes of the Barrs and Bishopstown. Everyone in the club hopes they can continue their success from the league into the championship. Best of luck to the lads and Philip O’ Reilly and his crew. Next we focus our attention to the U 21 hurling team, after been beaten by a very strong Valley Rovers side this team has regrouped superbly and after defeating Shamrocks in the backdoor they played Ballymartle in the Quarterfinal on Monday night. The Riverstick club were beaten by Nemo in the Intermediate hurling championship 2 nights earlier so their under 21 were well up for this game and gave all they could but Carrig held on for a two point victory and now face Courcey Rovers in the Semi- Final of the south east. Ballymartle cant be too disappointed as they played very well and with their U16 beating Carrigaline in the south east final and their minors winning the south east in hurling it has been a great year for them. Great work has been put in by Jimmy Murphy, Ger Hoey, Tony O’ Donovan and Kevin O’ Driscoll on this U21 team so lets hope they can reach a south east hurling final. The report on that game will be in next weeks article. The junior city footballers are still hoping for promotion to division 1 next year of the city league so when I get the info ill keep everyone updated. Lastly, well done to local rivals Shamrocks who captured the Junior A South east trophy on Sunday after a great victory against Kinsale in poor conditions in Innashannon. It has been 24 years since they won the trophy and it is great to see one of the Junior clubs from our division capture the trophy, Ballygarvan did it last year and went all the way to win the county and hope to see Shamrocks do the same, so well done to them and best of luck in the county.
