Under 11 City Football League

Nemo 5 - 7 Carrigaline 1 - 4

In sub zero temperatures on St.Patrick’s Day a depleted Carrigaline side faced a strong Nemo team at Trabeg in the first game of this league. The weather conditions for the match were appalling with an icy wind blowing across the pitch throughout. In the exposed venue that is Trabeg, it was a wind that would literally cut you in two.
Carrigaline could only muster 12 players on the day and had to face a full-strength Nemo side. The Carrig lads played their hearts out and full credit must go to them for their gutsy performance. Matthew O Reilly who scored 1 goal and 2 points, the goal from a hard earned penalty, deserves special mention for his performance.
We must give full credit to players, mentors and supporters who braved terrible conditions on one of the coldest days of the year.

U14 City Football League

St. Nicks 2 - 8 Carrigaline 1 - 15

Carrigaline travelled to the Glen last Saturday on a cold afternoon. However it was soon warmed up by a competitive game with quality football served up by both sides. Carrig stuck to their task well in the first period against a strong breeze. D Kinsella’s well taken goal helped Carrigaline to go into the interval only three points down.
C O Flynn, C Malone and D Hickey gave Carrig a strong platform to build from in the second period. Carrig kicked some good scores with the O Hanlon brothers finding their range. P Conway, M Malloy and S Caffrey impressed for the Owenabue side. Carrig took the lead in the last quarter with their patient play and never looked in serious danger after that running out comfortable winners in a well deserved victory.

County Under 14 Feile “A” Football

Carrigaline 4 - 8 Glanmire 2 - 4

Glanmire were the visitors to Carrigaline in the first round of the Feile football on Sunday last. Carrig started well with C O Flynn, D Kinsella and P Conway all hitting scores. Carrig went in at half time eight points to the good even though at times their focus and concentration could have been better.
Scores were harder to come by in the second period as Glanmire battled hard.
M Malloy, P Conway , D Kinsella and R OShea were the pick of the forwards on the day.

C Malone and C Allen marshalled the back line to great effect and the midfield duo were impressive with their committed wholehearted play.
Although Glanmire scored two late goals they were too little too late to effect the result. Carrig will have to redouble their efforts next time out if they are to progress in the competition as the games will get tougher.

UNDER 21’S REACH ANOTHER SOUTH EAST FINAL

BY NATHAN WALL P.R.O

UNDER 21 ‘A’ SOUTH EAST:
Carrigaline saw off the challenge of Courcey Rovers in Belgooly last Friday morning, but it was Carrigaline’s second half performance that saw them go into their fifth consecutive under 21 south east final, they now wait on the winners of Ballymartle and Valley Rovers. From the off it was the Ballinspittle side that took control of the game in a very waterlogged pitch and after 3 minutes were a point up after they pointed from the placed ball, Carrig were kept in the game after a great save from Michael Webb denied Courceys a certain goal. It was on the seventh minute that Carrig registered their first point after Colin Lynch made a superb run and was fouled and Barry O’ Keeffe easily converted. On the 14th minute the game was Carrig’s after a Daniel Twomey goal, a high ball in on top of the goalie was fumbled and Twomey easily converted to the disgust of the Courceys keeper, further points from midfielder Elliott O’ Keeffe, who on the day had a great game put Carrig further in the lead. Carrig began to play a lot of good play and the build-ups to their scores were well executed. On the 25th minute Twomey yet again buried the ball to the net and its hard to say it but this game was over as a contest then. There is not much to say about the second half due to Carrig’s dominance, a young Courcey Rovers side never gave up and even though they were been well beaten never got dirty and they were a credit to their club. Carrigaline kicked some nice points with backs Colin Lynch, Colin Touhy and Alan Noonan getting in on the scoreboard but on saying this Carrig also kicked some awful wides. The final score was Carrigaline 2-15 Courcey Rovers 0-4. Carrigaline team was: M Webb, J Kidney, G Harrington, R Barrett, C Touhy, A Noonan, C Lynch, H Cox, E O’ Keeffe, W O’ Brian, E O’ Sullivan, T O’ Sullivan, C Creed Nolan, D Twomey, B O’ Keeffe. Subs C Neville for T O’ Sullivan (inj).
ALL FIXTURES WILL BE ON THE NOTICE BOARDS IN THE CLUB AND ALSO IN BARRY COLLINS.

City Under 14 Hurling League Final (2005)

Carrigaline 1 – 6 Glen Rovers 4 – 10
As the scoreline suggests this was a comfortable win for the Glen in the 2005 League Final played at Carrigaline on Sunday March 12th. Few would have predicted this final scoreline at half-time as Carrig only trailed by 3 points (1-3 to 1-6) having played into a stiff breeze in the first half. Shane O Halloran was Carrig’s goalscorer and David Drake had pointed some great frees.
The defining minutes came early in the second half when the Glen goaled from a semi-penalty and moments later Carrig had a similar award thwarted by the outstanding Glen goalkeeper. From there on Carrig were playing catch-up and try as they might could not breach the Glen rearguard. A great point from Michael O Donovan and two pointed frees from David Drake was all they could muster.
At the other end the Glen full-forward was playing havoc with the Carrig defence and notched a couple of goals to put the issue beyond doubt.
For Carrig, goalie Dylan O Keeffe could not be faulted. Others to play well were David Drake, Michael Dwane, Cian Barry, Stephen Gorman and David Spillane.

City Under 13 Football League

Carrigaline 1 – 7 Eire Og 1 – 0
Played at Carrigaline in very wet conditions on Saturday March 11th, both sides gave it their all. Carrig’s more potent forward line proved the difference on a day when every score was hard-earned. Carrig’s wing-backs, Michael Quinn and David Drinan, were outstanding and were the instigators of many attacks which led to Carrigaline scores.

City Under 15 Football League (Section 1)

St Nicks 1 – 6 Carrigaline 0 – 9
Carrig took on St Nicks at the Glen Field in difficult conditions on Saturday March 11th. Both teams gave wholehearted displays and after an entertaining hour’s play the League points were shared
Carrig scorers were Eoin Kavanagh (0-3), Dylan O Keeffe (0-3), Liam O Regan (0-2) and James Sheppard (0-1).

VETARAN MEATHMAN HARTE GUIDES KILLER B’S TO FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR

COMPLIED BY NATHAN WALL PRO

JUNIOR A SOUTH EAST LEAGUE:
On Sunday evening last a youthful Carrigaline J A football team visited
Minane Bridge to take on Tracton in the southeast league. Aided by a gale
force on their backs, Tracton raced into 1.06 to no score lead by the 15th
minute. Carrigaline found conditions and some intelligent play by their
opponents hard to contain and by half time found themselves trailing by 1.09
to no score. Upon the restart, Carrigaline took the game to the opposition and enjoyed long passages of play. However they were unable to break the tracton defence and with both teams adding three points the game ended on a score of 1.12 to 0.03. Notable mention goes to Micheal Webb, Kieran Kelleher and Micheal
O’Sullivan
Carrigaline. M Webb, K Kelleher, R Barrett, R Jenkinson, N Pike, D
O’Riordan, C Lynch, E O’Keefe(1pt), P Holland(1pt), D Cotter, M O’Sullivan,
A Jenkinson, J Mullaney, C Creed Nolan(1pt), T O’Sullivan. Subs, C
Neville(1pt), C Irwin, R Ward, N Pike.
INTERMEDIATE TOM CREEDON CUP:
Intermediates went down to a disappointing defeat to Delaneys in the Tom Creedon Cup on Sunday. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Delaneys were quick to settle and by the seventh minute had kicked over two points. Eoin O Sullivan scored Carrigs first point from a free in the eight-minute. Despite some great defending by Carrigs full back line Delaneys kicked over two more points to lead by 4 points to 1.However in the 25th minute Eoin O Sullivan scored a tremendous goal bursting through a number of tackles to unleash a piledriver from twenty meters out to tie the scores at 1-1 to 4 points. Delaneys added two further points in the closing minutes of the first half to leave the score at Delaneys 6 points Carrig 1-1.
Turning to play with the wind confidence was high in the Carrig camp that the half time deficit would be over turned. However within two minutes of the restart Delaneys goaled when a deflected shot deceived goalkeeper Tony Harris and went into the net off the upright. This score changed the complexion of the game and the home side now faced an uphill battle. Three points in the space of four from Eoin O Sullivan(free) John Mullaney and Rory Barrett left just two points between the sides again. By this Eoin Murphy was having a huge influence on the game with his tireless endeavor resulting in the forwards gaining lots of possession. However the Carrie forwards were guilty of some wayward point shooting and a number of goal scoring opportunities were also spurned. Two further points, one a fisted effort from substitute Tony O Sullivan and the other from Ken O Keeffe tied the scores with time running out. Carrig were now pushing on for maximum points when they were caught with a sucker punch as Delaneys carried the ball upfield and won a 45metre free. From the resultant kick the ball broke in the square and Delaneys managed to score what proved to be the winning point.
There was disappointment for the home team despite some good performances from Kieran Blake,Tom Burke and Alan Noonan in defence, while Eoin O Sullivan and Rory Barrett tried hard up front.Eoin Murphy was Carrigs stand out performer on a day of missed scoring opportunities. Team T Harris K Blake T Burke P Clancy B Irwin A Noonan K Forbes E O Keeffe E Murphy K O Keeffe E O Sullivan W O Brien J Mullanney R Barrett B O Keeffe subs P Murphy C Tuohy T O Sullivan.
JUNIOR 3 CITY LEAGUE:
On Sunday last on a fresh morning the Carrigaline Junior B team continued their city league campaign against their neighbours Rochestown. Carrigaline played with the wind at their backs in the first half and registered their first score after five minutes through their busy full forward Kieran Stanton. Joe Heart added a couple of points with two from Michael Kiernan to leave Carrigaline in control. To be fair the Rochestown team was somewhat depleted but this cannot take away from a fine Carrig performance. Michael Kiernan and John Walsh were dominating mid field and with whatever ball did get through being cleared up by the excellent Dave Riordan and his impressive back line of Andy O’ Keeffe, John Roberts, Wesley Rownan, Paul Kiernan and the ever uncompromising Eoin West. With the change over at half time Carrig had a six point to no score advantage but facing a strong wind in the second half we felt we would need it. Some excellent link up play from Michael Kiernan and Browners saw Joe Harte get a chance at goal and as you know you don’t have to ask a Meath man twice and he rattled the back of the net.
Carrig added another couple of points through John Walsh, Barry Houlihan Browners and a goal from Shane Rath after a great pass form influential Brian Scanlon. Rochestown added two points. This was an enjoyable game with some great performances with a particular mention for Joe Harte with one goal and three points and a man of the match performance from Dave Riordan at center back.
The final score 2 goals 12 points to 2 points.
Team: P. fehily, A O’ Keeffe, J. Roberts, P. Kiernan, E. West, W. Rownan, D. Riordan, J. Walsh, M. Kiernan, M. Quinn, B. Scanlon, B. Houlihan, J. Harte, K. Staunton, D. Walker, T.J. Cronin, S. Rath.

U21 FOOTBALLERS ADVANCE INTO NEXT ROUND OF CHAMPIONSHIP
By Nathan Wall P.R.O

UNDER 21 SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONSHIP:
Carrigaline 1-9
Tracton 1-6
In shocking weather conditions in Camden last Saturday afternoon the under 21 footballers of Carrigaline had a brave victory over rivals Tracton. In a game that was ruined by the weather conditions both teams found it very hard to dome to terms with the conditions and also never got any chance of playing the good football that they wished. Carrig were well on top in the first half but failed to take advantage of the gale force winds. Late in the second half Tracton found themselves only a point behind Carrig but a great point from Tony O’ Sullivan sealed Carrigs victory and killed off Tractons comeback. Carrig got off to a great start when a neat pass from Wesley O’ Brian found the free Barry O’ Keeffe who nicely tapped over the bar to give Carrig the advantage but this advantage was ruled out immediately with a fine point from Tracton. After the tenth minute Carrig found themselves 2 points clear after O’ Keeffe slotted over and a superb Eoin O’ Sullivan 45m kick. Both teams were tackling hard and played well despite the weather conditions and even some brave players on both teams found the need to bounce the ball despite the very greasy surface. Tracton found themselves further behind on the 12th minute after O’ Keeffe’s shot was stopped well by the Tracton goalie but the fast responding Cormac Creed Nolan was soon there to bury the ball to the back of the net to make the score 1-3 to 0-1. Tracton responded excellently to this goal and soon kicked 2 good points to keep them in the game. It is very hard to single out any player who played well in the first half due to the conditions but the Carrig full forward line was playing very well and out first to every ball. Then came the highlight of the whole game, a superb solo run from Carrigaline half back Colin Lynch led to a superb solo point from him and he kicked confidently over the bar to put Carrig further ahead and further points from O’ Keeffe, O’ Sullivan and Twomey increased Carrig’s score and at half time Carrig were ahead by six points on a scoreline of Carrigaline 1-6 Tracton 0-3. In a second half that was very scrappy and poor Carrigaline only managed to score 3 points in this half where Tracton tallied 1-3. Yet again Carrig got off to a good start in the second when a Cormac Creed Nolan free hung in the air against a strong breeze and half forward Tony O’ Sullivan won the break and registered the first score of the second half but Carrig failed to score for the next 25 minutes. There was a lot of poor and scrappy play for the next ten minutes of the game but in the space of 2 minutes Tracton found themselves back in the game with a pointed free and from the kick out they won the break and a poor shot took a huge deflection and slowly found its way to the back of the net. In the final ten minutes Tracton narrowed the margin to only a point but the heart and hunger of the Carrig team led to a great Tony O’ Sullivan point that settled Carrig and broke the Tracton players hearts and then half back Colin Tuohy make amends for a poor Tracton kick out and finished off the game with a superb point. Tracton now tried in vain to get that goal they so badly needed but the Carrig backline held on for a good victory. Carrigaline Team: M Webb, R Barrett, J Moran, J Kidney, C Touhy, A Noonan, C Lynch, H Cox, E O’ Keeffe, W O’ Brian, E O’ Sullivan, T O’ Sullivan, C Creed Nolan, D Twomey, B O’ Keeffe. Subs Used- G Harrington for H Cox, C Neville for W O’ Brian. The lads now play Courcey Rovers on March 17th in Belgooly, no time arranged yet so check notice boards.
INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL TOM CREEDON CUP:
Carrigaline 0-10
Cill Na Martra 0-10
The Intermediate footballers of Carrigaline continued their good run of form in the Tom Creedon cup with a well deserved draw against a very physical and good Cill Na Martra side on Sunday afternoon in Carrigaline. With the weather over the past few days before the game wet the pitch was well torn up before the game but this did not hamper a good 60 minutes of hard fought football. Carrig got off to a good start and full forward Eoin De Barra saw his shot rattle the crossbar after only a minute of play but a point from midfielder Eoin Murphy 30 seconds later put Carrig on the scoreboard. The home team dominated the opening ten minutes of the game but the visitors soon relaxed to the surroundings and then they took control for a period of the game also. The visitors scored on the tenth minute with a pointed free and from this they took control of the game and soon took advantage on a scoreline of 4 points to 2 points. They played some nice fast football but their dominace in the first half was only short lived and on the 20th minute the referee awarded Carrigaline a penalty to the disgust of the Cill Na Martra palyers and selector, upped stepped Barry O’ Keeffe who sensibly tapped the ball over the bar to reduce the deficit. Then in the last few minutes of the first half Cill Na Martra were gifted 3 easy points, two of them coming from defencesive errors in the Carrig defence, and to round off a poor last five minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty, but to the delight of the Carrig team goalkeeper Tony Harris kept Carrig in the game with a superb save. Half time score Carrigaline 0-4 Cill Na Martra 0-7. The second half saw Carrig have a good start when Eoin O’ Sullivan superbly kicked a long range free over the bar. In a good entertaining second half where there was some great football and point scoring on show it was the Carrigaline defence who performed well to deny the visitors certain points. Both teams kept exchanging points straight after each other with Cill Na Martra going further ahead on the tenth minute but this was returned with a superb point from Ken O’ Keeffe who on the day played some nice football and worked extremely hard. On the 20th minute came, in my opinion, the turning point of the game, a well worked ball from Cill Na Martra entered the Carrig defence and their full forward, who found himself in paradise, one on one with Harris, but it was Harris who stood tall and pulled off a great save, from that Eoin De Barra, who had a great second half at midfield delivered a ball to Carrig full forward Peter Murphy, and Murphy expertly kicked the ball over the bar. In the final seconds of the game the home side were only a point behind and upped stepped Ken O’ Keeffe, after a good passage of play, and with confidence and pride O’ Keeffe kicked from distance and leveled the game to the delight of the Carrig team. Straight after the kick out the ref blew the final whistle to the delight of the Carrig side and anger of the visitors. Players who performed well for Carrig were Tony Harris, Tom Burke, Cillian Forbes, Eoin De Barra, Barry and Ken O’ Keeffe and John Mullaney.
Minor B Football League v Crosshaven
After a couple of near misses, the minor B footballers got their first win of the season with a great second half comeback against Crosshaven.
Despite playing against the wind Carrig led by four points to two with ten minutes to go to the break thanks to points from David Manley and Simon Deedy. Two points for Crosshaven had the teams level coming up to half time but then the Carrig defense allowed Crosshaven in for two goals and a point in as many minutes to give Crosshaven a 2-5 to 0-4 lead at half time.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw Crosshaven maintain control of the game with just a single point for each team. However a Danny Cullinane goal reduced the deficit to four points, and led on by a great display form Danny, six unanswered points left the final score Carrigaline 1-11, Crosshaven 2-6.
Best for Carrig were Cullinane, Darren Kelly, Cian O’Sullivan, Eoin Harrington, David Manley and second half sub Shane Noonan.
Team: Kevin Ahern, Darren Kelly, Brian Giltinan, Cillian Kavanagh, Brian Twomey, Danny Cullinane, Cian O’Sullivan, Eoin Harrington, Eoin O’Sullivan, Simon Deedy, Ivan Ward, Kieran Manley, David Manley, Jamie O’Sullivan and Stephen Power. Subs Used: Shane Noonan and Paddy Kelleher.
FIXTURES:

Carrigaline Under Age GAA

A Great Weekend for Football Teams

Five great victories were recorded by our under-age football teams over the past weekend in South East and City competitions.

U-14C South-East Football League.

Carrigaline 2-7 Tracton 1-5.

In this encounter the Carrig lads had to dig deep to finally overcome a gallant Tracton team. Carrigaline were out of sorts in the first half and found themselves trailing by 6pts at the break 7pts to 1pt. A number of positional switches at the break and the lads came out a different team in the second half. The ever improving Andrew Thomas slotted in a couple of goals and with some quality ball going into the forwards they scored some well taken points. Philip Ahern had another good game in the full back line along with Brian Curran, Darragh O’Sullivan and Michael Curtin. Their next South-East league game is away to Courcey Rovers on Sunday the 12th March - time to be arranged.

Team; Kevin Kavanagh, Philip Ahern, Anthony O’Reilly, David Drinan, Darragh O’ Sullivan, Stephen Dwane, Robert O’Shea, Brian Curran, Jamie Kind, Dylan O’Brien, Michael Lynch, Cillian McSweeney, Michael Curtin, Andrew Thomas, Michael O’Grady, Eoin O’Donovan,

U14B South East Football League

Carrigaline 0-10 Valley Rovers 0-6

Carrig turned in an impressive performance in the first match of their league campaign. Carrig went in at half time level after playing against a strong breeze. They could have been in a stronger position had they used their possession a bit better. Valleys went into a two point lead soon after the restart, but Carrig’s spirit came to the fore as they wrestled the game back to their advantage. Cian O Flynn gave a fine performance which was matched by the commitment of Morgan Hanlon and Chris Allen. Thomas Kent gave the Valleys defence a hard time with his wholehearted display. Padraig Conway won a lot of ball in the forward line and used it very well. Carrigaline can feel satisfied with their weekend’s work as they pushed through for a deserved victory.

Under 16B South East Football League

Carrigaline 5-13 Shamrocks 1-05

On Saturday the U-16’s played Shamrocks in the first round of the football league in Carrigaline. Carrigaline started slowly but after fifteen minutes began to take control with Kaelan Spillane , Brian Dorgan and David O Regan well on top in their positions. The half back line of Shane Noonan (capt) leading by example, Tony O Connor and Cian Barry now well on top were providing a great platform for the forward line and mid-fielders to build up a comfortable lead at half-time. James Sheppard at full-forward gathered an amount of ball and both corner forwards Adrian Lynch and Liam O Regan got very good scores from his passes.
Jonathan Bermingham in goal also brought off a couple of great saves and was ably assisted by Daniel Bagnall , James O Shea and Brian Twomey . This was a very good team effort and it hopefully is an indication of things to come this year. On the day the distribution of scores was excellent with all the forward line contributing to the score-line. Wayne Bruton in mid-field was excellent as was Brian Dorgan scoring 1-5 on the day. We will be training again on Friday night at 5.45p.m. Next week-end we will be playing Kinsale away.

U-13 City Football League

Carrigaline 1-10 V St.Michael’s 2-4

On a lovely afternoon on Sat. last, two good football teams produced a fast moving game of high standard, with Carrigaline coming out on top having led from start to finish.
Eoin O’Donovan eased Carrig into an early lead with some well taken points. Eoin was a thorn in the Michaels defence throughout the game. Jamie Kind and Cillian McSweeney controlled midfield. Jamie scored a wonderful point after fielding the ball in the middle of the pitch, soloing powerfully up the middle and rifling the ball over the bar for a great score. Many attacks by Michaels were ably dealt with by some great defending. John O’Keeffe , Anthony O’Reilly and Stephen Dwane had excellent games, setting up many attacks with their long clearances. Kevin Kavanagh also produced some good saves in goal. Michael Lynch found the net mid way through the second half after some good approach work by Robert O’Shea. Michaels came with a late rally but again the lads showed great quality to see out the game with a three point winning margin. Their next outing in the City League is on Saturday the 11th March at 2pm home to Eire Og.
Team; Kevin Kavanagh, Anthony O’Reilly, David Drinan, Darragh O’ Sullivan, Stephen Dwane, Robert O’Shea, Brian Curran, Jamie Kind, Dylan O’Brien, Michael Lynch, Cillian McSweeney, Michael Curtin, Andrew Thomas, Michael O’Grady, Eoin O’Donovan, C.Cremin, K.Conlon, E.O’Donnell, M.Quinn.

U14 City Football League

Carrigaline 3-8 St. Vincents 2-4

Carrigaline started brightly against the visitors with Stephen O Flynn scoring a goal from a long range effort. However, Carrig lost their way as the half wore on allowing St. Vincents back into it. Carrig put in a more consistent effort in the second half with Ciaran Malone, Paul Molloy and Gary O Mahony playing well in defence. Luke Hanlon and C. Keating showed well for the ball in the forward line. Carrig pulled away in the second half tagging on the scores to win by a comfortable margin.
