Carrigdhoun Under 11 Football Final

Having beaten both Sliabh Rua and Courcey Rovers on their way to the final and at full strength, a reasonably confident Carrigaline team travelled to Brinny last Sunday the 26th of November to take on the hotly favoured Valley Rovers team.
Valley Rovers won the toss and decided to play with a very strong wind. The match started at a frantic pace and quickly Valley Rovers established a foothold in the game scoring both points and goals in quick succession. Carrigaline did all in their power to stop the onslaught but a combination of very quick skilful and physical play, all over the park, combined with a very strong wind, made the task very difficult indeed and Valley Rovers led comfortably at half time.
Even with the advantage of the wind in the second half, Carrigaline could not over come the physical strength and skill of this exceptional Valley Rovers team. The Carrigaline defence put up a fine display with Luke Garvin, Sean O Brien and Darragh Buckley doing all in their power in the back line. Carrigaline did manage some good attacking play in the second half with a notable score taken by Darragh Corcoran.
Though it was not their day, all the Carrigaline lads can be very proud of their achievements this year and can look forward with anticipation to next year.

Congratulations
Well done to Nicholas Murphy on his selection on the 2006 All Stars Football Team.
It was an honour hugely deserved and it crowned an immensely successful year for Nicholas following a Munster championship medal, selection on the Irish Compromise Rules team and on the GPA Team of the Year. Nicholas is an outstanding role-model for all young players and is a special hero to all the young players in Carrigaline Hurling and Football Club.
Congratulations also to Ger Spillane of the neighbouring Ballygarvan club who made it a magnificent and historic Carrigdhoun double.

Carrig Under-11 Footballers Reach SE Final
Carrigdhoun Under-11 Football League
Courcey Rovers 4 - 5 Carrigaline 8 - 13

In a thrilling encounter last Saturday two highly skilled teams did battle in the Under 11 Southeast football league. Carrigaline opened with blistering pace scoring two very fast points from Darragh Corcoran followed by two goals, one from Darragh and the other from Mathew O Reilly. However Courcey Rovers heads did not drop and they scored two quick goals to bring them right back into contention. The skill and score taking from both teams in the first half was breathtaking to watch and the parents looking on were more than proud. Carrigaline scored two more goals (Danny Cremen, Stephen Maguire) and a number of points (Jack Murphy, Mark O Shea, Mark O Driscoll, Darren Sisk) and were in a strong position at the end of the first half.

As expected in the second half Courcey Rovers fought back hard but the Carrigaline defence stood strong. Particularly good in the half back line were Jared Fitzgerald and Brian Lynch with Aodan Cotter mopping up any ball that got through to the full backs. Goal keeper Fiachra Hurley made a magnificent save late in the second half. Carrigaline continued to attack supported by David Kirk and more goals from Darragh Corcoran, Mathew O Reily and Killian O Mahoney helped clinch the game. Well done to all involved, especially Courcey Rovers for their sporting behaviour both on and off the pitch. Carrigaline now look forward to the Final against Valley Rovers this coming Saturday.

Super Sunday!

Carrigaline Under Age GAA

Sunday last was a great day for the Under-Age section as three Carrigdhoun hurling league titles were won. An under-13 double was recorded as well as winning the under-16 title.

Under 13 B Hurling League Final Carrigaline 1-8 Ballinhassig 0-5
Carrigaline were well on top in this game but found it difficult to shake off a Ballinhassig side that fought to the end and kept the margin of defeat down to six points. Robert O Shea was top scorer with 1-4 while Dylan O Brien (0-2), John O Keeffe (0-1), Darragh O Sullivan and Anthony O Reilly all had excellent games.

Under 13 C Hurling League Final Carrigaline 4-10 Kinsale 3-1
A great team performance saw Carrig record a comprehensive victory over a gallant Kinsale side. Kevin Conlon gave an outstanding display at wing-back. Jamie McCarthy (0-2) and Conor Gould (2-3) formed an excellent mid-field partnership.
Cian Diggins helped himself to three points while Andrew Thomas scored a peach of a goal in the second half with a sweetly-struck low drive. Robert Foster at full-forward proved to be a real handful for the Kinsale full-backline. Goalkeeper Shane Griffin, Michael Curtin, Philip Ahern and Michael McIntyre all had excellent games.

Under 16 Hurling League Final Carrigaline 5-14 Courcey Rovers 1-4
This game was effectively over at half-time as Carrig held a commanding 5-9 to 0-2 interval lead. First-half goals from James Sheppard (2), James McCarthy, Adrian Lynch and Simon O Brien ended the game as a contest. David Drake was unerring both from play and frees while Davy O Regan and wing-back Brian Dorgan also chipped in with points.

City Under 11 Football League
Carrigaline 1 – 9 Ballincollig 4 - 9

In a very closely contested match, Carrigaline and Ballincollig put on a very fine display of football on Saturday 14th. The match was very evening the first half with Ballincollig a couple of points ahead at the interval. Carrigaline opened the second half with a great display in the first five minutes, edging in front by a point at one stage. However Ballincollig staged a very good come back and snatched 2 goals in very quick succession and Carrigaline could not respond. Particularly strong in defence for Carrigaline was Cormac Hickey. Scorers for Carrigaline were Mathew O Reilly, Brian Coakley, Jack Murphy and Darren Sisk.

Carrigdhoun Under 11 Football League
Carrigaline 0-3, Valley Rovers 0-11

This was a very hard fought game of football with favourites Valley Rovers starting very strongly. The wind helped Carrigaline in the first half and despite good points from Jack Murphy and Mathew O Reilly Carrigaline trailed 5 points to 2 at half time. The wind favoured Valley Rovers in the second half and Carrigaline could not respond to their point scoring. Killian O Mahony kept a clean sheet in goal with Darragh Buckley scoring a very good point from play. The pure tenacity of the Valley Rovers game took Carrigaline by surprise and will be a lesson for the future.

Mixed Fortunes for Under-16 Footballers

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA
Carrigdhoun Under-16 Football Finals
Following the disappointment of their County Hurling Final defeat by Midleton the under-16 players changed codes and on Sunday last contested the Carrigdhoun A and C Football Finals with the teams enjoying mixed fortunes.
In the A grade they travelled to Brinny and took on the home team Valley Rovers but found them too hot to handle and came out on the wrong side of a 3-12 to 1-5 scoreline.
Panel: : Jonny Bermingham, Brian Twomey, Daniel Bagnall, James O Shea, Cian Barry, Shane Noonan, Gearoid Harrington, Davy O Regan, James McCarthy, Brian Dorgan, Tony O Connor, Adrian Lynch, James Crowley, Simon O Brien, Mark O Mahony, Kevin Kidney, Eoin Conway, Mark Canty, Timmy Byrne and James Sheppard who was unable to play due to injury.
A word of thanks to Micheal O Connor who put a lot of excellent work into the training of the footballers throughout the year.

Our second team took on the challenge of Courcey Rovers in the C final at Ballinhassig and emerged triumphant on a 2-8 to 0-6 scoreline. Carrig started brightly and were 1-4 to 0-0 ahead after twenty minutes, Eoin Kavanagh being the goalscorer when he was on hand to finish a flowing move involving Sean Conlon, Wayne Bruton and Kaelan Spillane. Courceys registered two points before the interval and began the second-half strongly. However an excellent Carrig defence coped admirably with everything that was thrown at them and Courceys failed to make inroads on the Carrig lead. A Dylan O Keeffe goal two minutes from the end put the icing on the cake to leave the final score at 2-8 to 0-6.
Dylan O Keeffe and Eoin Kavanagh both notched 1-1 while Kaelan Spillane and Wayne Bruton each scored 0-3. Others to shine in an excellent team performance were Shane O Halloran, Cian Sisk, Jamie Corcoran, Sean Mellett, Sean Conlon and Oisin Finn.
Following the game Carrigdhoun Bord-na-nOg Vice-Chairman, Brendan Keohane, presented the trophy to the Carrig captain, Jamie Corcoran.

City Under-15 Hurling League
Douglas were our hosts on Saturday last and following an entertaining and closely-contested game the home side emerged victorious on a 3-8 to 2-7 scoreline. There was nothing between the sides at the interval but Douglas forged seven points clear in the second half before a great fight-back saw Carrig reduce the lead to the minimum. A late goal to the home side gave them a four-point victory.
Cian Barry was our top-scorer with 2-1 while David Drake contributed 0-4 and Wayne Bruton 0-2. Others to play well were centre-forward Eoin Kavanagh and David Spillane when switched to centre-back

U-13 City Huling Championship.

Carrigaline 1-8 Glen Rovers 2-3

On Saturday last Carrigaline U-13’s pulled off a memorable victory against a gallant Glen Rovers outfit. Carrigaline trailed the visitors at the break by five points, but some positional switches during the half time interval saw a different and much more committed team performance in the second half. Stephen Dwane was excellent throughout and led the revival from centre-back. Carrig piled forward in attack after attack and were rewarded when Michael Lynch hit a low drive to the back of the net which was followed by two points from David Drinan and Robert O Shea who both had outstanding games. Anthony O Reilly and Cillian McSweeney cleared their lines on numerous occasions and along with Jamie Kind set up the final onslaught on the Glen goal. The pressure finally paid off when Michael Lynch struck the lead score from 45 metres and another fine point from Robert O’Shea (who ran up a total of six points.) saw the comeback complete. It was a great team performance characterized by effort and courage.

Carrig travelled to Bishopstown on Saturday last to take on the home side in the quarter final of the hurling league. Bishopstown raced into a three-point lead early on but Carrig hit back with 1-4 without reply to take a lead into the half-time break. Bishopstown again made a good start to the second half and retook the lead. However a resurgent Carrig, prompted by the excellent play of Robert O Shea, Cillian McSweeney, Stephen Dwane, Kevin Kavanagh, Anthony O Reilly, Michael Lynch, John O Keeffe and especially Brian Curran finished the game strongly to win on the scoreline 3-7 to 0-10.

South-East Under-16 Football Championship
Carrigaline 3-15 Sliabh Rua 2-1
Riverstick hosted this football semi-final on Sunday morning last and at the end of the hour Carrigaline had qualified comfortably for the South-East final.
A two-goal salvo mid-way through the first half from the boots of Simon O Brien and Eoin Conway propelled Carrig into a 2-4 to 0-0 lead and effectively ended the game as a contest. Another major from Conway had Carrigaline ahead 3-8 to 1-1 at half-time.
The second half was a procession as seven different Carrig players all found the target with Sliabh Rua’s only reply being a goal from a penalty.

ANTHONY CONWAY TOURNAMENT

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

Anthony Conway Tournament a Great Success
On Saturday last the Carrigaline club organised an under-14 football tournament to honour the memory of the late Anthony Conway who died unexpectedly just prior to last Christmas. At the time of his death Anthony had been Manager of the Under-13 Hurling and Football teams so it was appropriate that the inaugural tournament in his honour featured his team and five other invited clubs, Aghada, Canovee, Nemo Rangers, St Finbarrs and Valley Rvs.
The six teams were divided into two groups of three; Carrigaline, Aghada and St Finbarrs in Group 1 with Nemo Rangers, Valley Rvs and Canovee in Group 2.
Following the initial round-robin series of games Carrigaline qualified to meet Nemo Rangers in one semi-final and St Finbarrs faced Valley Rvs in the second semi-final
Aghada and Canovee qualified to meet in the C Final.
In their meeting with Nemo, Carrigaline were in a strong position at half-time, leading 1-5 to 0-2. However Nemo came back strongly in the second period and scored some well-worked goals to win on a scoreline of 5-4 to 1-9. It was this ability of the talented Nemo forwards to score goals that was also to prove decisive in the final against city rivals St Finbarrs. What a marvellous final it was and a fitting end to a great day’s sport. The game ebbed and flowed throughout with the lead changing hands on several occasions. Barrs led 2-5 to 3-1 at the interval and extended their lead with a successful penalty conversion after the break. Nemo were not to be denied however, and came roaring back with some scintillating football to run out winners on a 6-5 to 4-6 scoreline.
In the C Final Aghada were winners over Canovee after a closely-fought game while Carrigaline easily accounted for SE rivals Valley Rvs in the B Final.

Following the finals the presentation ceremony took place. Carrigaline Under-Age GAA Chairman, Pat Dineen, welcomed all the teams and their supporters and thanked them for their participation in the tournament. In welcoming the Conway family he paid tribute to the late Anthony, praising him for his dedication and commitment to the club and especially to his young hurling and footballing charges. He said that he was greatly missed by all members of the club but especially by his wife Breda and children Jason, Lorraine, Cormac and Padraic, a playing member of the Carrigaline under-14 team.
Anthony’s wife, Breda, then presented each team captain with a commemorative plaque and his children presented medals to all the players. Finally, Breda presented the Anthony Conway Perpetual Cup to the winning Nemo Rangers captain.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Billy Fennel thanked all the teams for giving a wonderful display of football and he thanked the Carrigaline club for organising the tournament in honour of Anthony.
So ended what was in some ways a sad day but also a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much time and energy in caring for some of the youth of Carrigaline.

Referees for the day were Rod Allen and Michael Harrington of the host club and Brendan Keohane of Ballinhassig. A special word of thanks to the stewards and umpires and especially to all the ladies who did a superb job in catering for the teams and the adults. John Dwane did an excellent job as co-ordinator of the tournament

Carrig Win a Thriller
Carrigaline 1-15 Eire Og 2-10
Carrigaline qualified for the County Premier Under 16 Hurling Final when they edged out favourites Eire Og in a thrilling semi-final played at Brinny on Tuesday of last week. Displaying whole-hearted commitment and superb skill Carrig led from start to finish to deservedly claim their place in the County Final.
Carrigaline started brilliantly and never allowed their opponents to settle. David Drake opened the scoring with a point from play in the fourth minute and two minutes later he converted a free after Simon O Brien was fouled. Wing-forward James Sheppard crashed the ball to the back of the Eire Og net in the eight minute to give his side a five-point cushion.
Eire Og got off the mark with a point in the tenth minute but another pointed free from David Drake and a superb long-range point by Simon O Brien from the middle of the field extended Carrig’s advantage. Eire Og were back in the game when they goaled from a 20 metre free in the twenty-first minute but in the remaining time before the interval Carrig outscored their opponents 0-4 to 0-1. Davy O Regan, Adrian Lynch, Simon O Brien and David Drake were on target to leave the half-time score; Carrigaline 1-9 Eire Og 1-3.
A point from a free by David Drake and one from play by James Sheppard extended Carrig’s lead to eight points after the restart. However four pointed frees to Eire Og had halved the lead by the mid-point of the second half. David Drake steadied the nerves with his fifth pointed free in the seventeenth minute but Eire Og again applied pressure and with three further points had reduced the deficit to two points with four minutes left on the clock. Mark O Mahony pulled off a super save to deny the Eire Og forwards and James McCarthy and Jason O Leary struck for two absolutely vital points to give Carrig a four-point lead heading into added-time. A minute later Eire Og got through for a goal to make it a one-point game but substitute Stephen Gorman had the final say when he pointed in the thirty-second minute to give Carrig a two-point victory.
This was a superb team performance from Carrig. The defensive unit of goalkeeper Mark O Mahony and backs James O Shea, Daniel Bagnall, Brian Twomey, Shane Noonan, Tony O Connor and Brian Dorgan laid the foundations for this victory by denying the Eire Og forwards space and putting them under sustained pressure.
Midfielders David Drake and Simon O Brien drove the team on and gave the forwards a plentiful supply of ball. The forward division of Jason O Leary, Cian Barry, James Sheppard, James McCarthy, Davy O Regan, Adrian Lynch and sub Stephen Gorman all played really well and got the scores to give Carrig a famous victory and qualification for the County Final against either Na Piarsaigh or Midleton.

Carrigaline scorers: D Drake 0-6 (0-5 frees), J Sheppard 1-1, S O Brien 0-2, D O Regan 0-2, A Lynch 0-1, J McCarthy 0-1, J O Leary 0-1, S Gorman 0-1.

Panel: Mark O Mahony, James O Shea, Daniel Bagnall, Brian Twomey,

South East Under 14 B Football Championship Semi-Final

Carrigaline 4-11 Kinsale 2-4

Carrigaline travelled to Kinsale on Friday last to see who would contest the showpiece final against Crosshaven. Kinsale started the better of the two sides and showed they meant business in the opening quarter. Carrigaline left too many gaps in the defence which the Kinsale forwards were only too happy to capitalise on. The home team went into the break with a deserved four point lead. Only for some well taken scores by Podge Conway and David Kinsella Carrig might have left themselves with too much to do. Michael Molloy and Anthony O Reilly also stood out in the first period with their wholehearted displays.
A different Carrig team took to the field in the second period and they battled their way back into the match led from the front by Chris Allen. Cian O Flynn also began to dominate in his sector and got good support from Stephen Caffrey and D Hickey. C Allen picked off some lovely scores and the forward line also chipped in to eventually take Carrigaline into the lead. Kinsale were tiring by now and also playing into a stiff breeze. Some M Molloy points sandwiched between a Thomas Kent score and a Conway double goal salvo made the game safe. The Carrigaline lads know that they will need to improve, but are looking forward to the final against Crosshaven next week.

SE Under 16 Hurling Champions
Pride of place this week goes to our Under-16 hurlers who captured the SE championship following victories over Courcey Rovers in the semi-final and Sliabh Rua in the final. They also recorded a great win over Bandon in the first round of the County championship.
On Wednesday August 2nd they travelled to Ballinspittle to take on Courcey Rovers in the championship semi-final. In the opening half they played some super hurling to lead by 4-11 to 2-1 at half-time. However they had to survive a spirited Courcey fightback in the second period before emerging victorious by five points, 4-16 to
4-11.
They faced great rivals Sliabh Rua in the final at Belgooly on Thursday August 10th and championship. They were involved in another thrilling game which ebbed and flowed following an exciting and high-scoring game came out on top by 5-16 to 2-14.
There was little rest for them as two days later they travelled to Bandon to take on the home side in the County throughout before eventually emerging victorious by four points. Well done to the entire panel of players and to Kevin O Brien and his management team on a great achievement.

Kinsale v Carrigaline
Carrigaline enjoyed a comfortable victory over a weakened Kinsale outfit on Friday night last. Carrigaline started well but struggled to put the scores on the board. Nevertheless, Carrigaline went in at half time in a commanding position. Kinsale came more into it in the second period, but the result was never really in doubt. Among those who performed well for Carrigaline on the night were Peter Bresnan, Ciaran Malone, Cian O Flynn and Morgan Hanlon. The result was marred by an unfortunate injury to Luke Hanlon and we wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.
