Under 11 Football - John Kerins Tournament
On Saturday last the under-11 footballers competed in the John Kerins Memorial Tournament at Togher and together with Douglas qualified for the finals which will be held in Pairc Ui Rinn on June 9th.
22 players travelled to St Finbarrs H&F Club where they played three matches in the qualifiers for the Annual John Kerins Memorial Cup. John was the outstanding goalkeeper in the Cork Senior Football Team which contested 4 All Irelands in a row from 1987 to 1990 winning two of them.
The first match against the hosts was a well contested affair with Carrigaline coming out on top on a score of 2-6 to 1-1 with well taken goals from David O’ Hara and Matthew O’ Reilly. The ‘Barrs’ keeper was very impressive saving certain goals from David Kirk and Gearoid O Donovan the latter deflected over for a point. Brian Coakley caught the eye with four points and Darragh Buckley also scored a point.
In the second match Carrigaline matched up against a very impressive Douglas team and were well beaten on a score of 4-6 to 0-0. On this evidence Douglas will take some stopping in the competition.
Qualification for the finals all came down to the last match against De La Salle from Waterford. This was a really close contest. At half time the sides were level at 1 point each. Carrigaline stepped up a gear in the second half aided by the breeze and scored four additional points to run out winers by 0-5 to 0-1 and thus advance with Douglas to the finals to be held in Pairc Ui Rinn on 9th June.
Players to stand out for Carrigaline were Sean Brophy, David Corkery and Cathal Murphy. Others to catch the eye were Gearoid O’ Donovan and David O’ Hara in attack, Donal O’ Regan and David Kirk in defence and the usual ’stalwarts’ of Brian Coakley, Darragh Buckley, Kieran Kavanagh and Matthew O’ Reilly around the middle of the park..
Carrigaline used three different goalkeepers in the competition Daniel O’ Reilly, Daniel Canty and Michael McGrath and all excelled.
All are keenly looking forward to a good day out at the finals on 9th June.
Results: Barrs 1-1 Carrigaline 2-6; Douglas 4-6 Carrigaline 0-0; De la Salle 0-1 Carrigaline 0-5.

Crosshaven 2-5 Carrigaline 5-3
On Monday evening Carrig travelled to Crosshaven for a crunch game against the home side in the SE league. Following a thrilling hour’s play in which both teams gave their all, Carrigaline prevailed to earn a place in the SE final against Courcey Rovers. Having played against the slight breeze in the opening half Carrig trailed by a goal at half-time, 0-1 to 1-1.
Crosshaven started the second half strongly but were denied on several occasions by the superb goalkeeping of Daniel O Reilly. They did manage to extend their lead but Carrig gradually began to gain a foothold in the game. The strong play of Darragh Buckley, Donal O Regan, Kieran Kavanagh and Brian Coakley saw Carrig claw their way back into contention. Up front Matthew O Reilly was in blistering form and in the course of that second half struck a hat-trick of goals. Cathal Murphy and Adam Cohalan scored a goal apiece as Carrig took a firm grip on the game. Crosshaven fought to the end but on the night Carrigaline deserved their victory.

Carrigaline 1-5 Sliabh Rua 0-9
Last Monday, in front of many supporters, a thrilling encounter between Carrigaline and Sliabh Rua in the SE league was played out. Carrigaline took an early lead with an excellent goal from Deane O Leary and points from Jack Murphy and Darragh Corcoran. However Sliabh Rua never gave up and thanks to some very skilful play brought themselves back into the game with a series of well taken points.
Carrig’s ball handling was very good with Danny Cremen, Brian Lynch and Mark O Driscoll playing well in the half forward line. Also, defensively, Stephen Maguire had a blinder and Jack Murphy in goal made some brilliant saves.
There was a nail biting finish with only one point between the teams and Carrig did every thing in their power to score but were unlucky not to do so. Well done to all, players and supporters, for a cracking game of football.
Under 14
The Feile competitions continue to dominate and games were played in hurling and football during the past week.
Feile Iomaint Carrigaline 5-12 Fermoy 1-4
Carrig continued their winning ways in this year’s Feile Iomaint with a comprehensive victory in a hard physical game on a beautiful summer-like evening.
Fermoy were the visitors on Thursday last in the hurling and Carrig ran out easy winners on a 5-12 to 1-5 scoreline, with 5-9 of the Carrig total coming from play.
The visitors put up an almighty challenge during the first period with both teams putting on an exhibition of first time hurling and on numerous occasions the sound of the clash of the ash rang out around the ground where every ball won was hotly contested. As many a chance for the home team went abegging we wondered who would take control before the break as the score read 4pts to 1pt with twenty minutes on the clock. The all important score came just before the break when the hard working and impressive Cillian McIntrye first timed the sliothar to the back of the Fermoy net. Half time score 1-5 to 1pt.
With a few shrewd positional switches at the break from the management, Carrigaline took full control of the game in the second period. Cillian McSweeney and Robert O’Shea excelled throughout in the middle of the pitch and scored some wonderful long range points but Captain for the evening Michael Lynch was the star performer in the second half notching up 3-3 to put the game well beyond the visitors. This win was hard earned with the foundations being laid by an excellent back six where Stephen Dwane and John O’Keeffe excelled in their roles.
Scorers: Michael Lynch (3-3), Cillian McIntyre (1-1), Robert O Shea (0-4), Shane Griffin (1-1), Kevin Kavanagh, Cillian McSweeney and Michael Quinn (0-1 each)
SE Under 14 Football
On the following evening attention turned to the SE football league when Bandon and Tracton were the respective visitors in the B and C competitions. Both games resulted in easy victories for the home sides.
In the B game against Bandon, Kevin Conlon, Darragh O Sullivan, Kevin O Connell, Stephen Dwane, Eoin O Donovan and Dylan O Brien were all outstanding in an excellent team display.
In the C game versus Tracton, Tony Ncube, Robert Foster, Jamie McCarthy, Cian McLoughlin, Philip Ahern, Conor Cremin, Shane Griffin, Cillian McIntyre and team captain Brian Curran were the players who caught the eye.
Feile Peil Carrigaline 2-7 Ballincollig 0-4
Carrig travelled to Ballincollig on Sunday evening to take on the home side in the quarter-final of the Feile Peil and emerged victorious on a 2-7 to 0-4 scoreline, thus qualifying for a tilt at Douglas in the semi-final.
Anyone who made the trip to Ballincollig on Sunday evening last witnessed a fine display of courage, commitment, determination and most of all a high level of skill from a great bunch of Under 14’s who never give up and always represent their club with great pride and honour.
This was a hard hitting physical game from the start with the home team trying to put down a marker from early on. Scores were hard to come by, Carrigaline guilty of kicking numerous wides in the first period and they trailed by 2pts at the break, 0-1 to 0-3, Carrig’s only score coming from the boot of Dylan O’Brien.
The second half was an almighty struggle as the Owenabue outfit out-fought and out classed their opponents, playing some high quality football as the home team began to lose their composure.
Eoin Moyihan pulled off two great saves, Kevin Kavanagh played a blinder at full back and was ably helped by Anthony O’Reilly and Eoin O’Donnell who was replaced by Kevin O’Connell after an injury. Michael Quinn and Michael O’Grady broke up and set up many attacks with their ability to win the 50/50 balls. Middle of the pitch was won by Jamie Kind and Cillian McSweeney as they caught great ball and ran at Ballincollig throughout the game. Carrig’s opening goal came from a free way out on the left which Stephen Dwane took and as it hung high in the air for what seemed an age, it finally found its nesting place in the back of the net. This was followed by four great points from David Drinan and Michael Lynch all from long range. Carrigaline smelt victory and went at the home team at every opportunity with tireless running from Robert O’Shea, John O’Keeffe and Eoin O’Donovan. Sub Cillian McIntrye scored an excellent point off his left peg to stretch the lead. Darragh O’Sullivan was introduced with ten minutes to go and played his part. Six points to the good with four minutes remaining Carrigaline killed off any late surge from the home team when Michael Lynch calmly stroked the ball past the opposing keeper to send the Carrigaline support home happy, knowing they would have another day out in the Feile Peil. The old saying “Football will always win out” was certainly right on this occasion.

Carrigaline 3-18 Shamrocks 3-5
Carrigaline played Shamrocks in their first home league game last Wednesday night. Carrig started well and they took many fine scores in the opening period. However, Shamrocks managed to grab a couple of goals to keep them in the hunt at half time. In the second half Shamrocks came out fighting and put it up to Carrig for a while. As the half wore on though Carrig regained control and with their forwards on song, particularly P Conway, Doc Callaghan, J Glennon and D McCarthy they ran out comfortable winners. Others to impress were L Hanlon, C O Flynn, M Hanlon P Molloy and C Keating.
