Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

Brave Carrig Comeback Falls Short
County Under-16 Premier HC
Mallow 1-16 Carrigaline 1-14
Carrigaline staged a thrilling second-half comeback but were denied by two late points for Mallow in the county Premier Under 16 Hurling Championship semi-final played at Mallow on Sunday last.
The opening stages were closely contested and Mallow, aided by a strong breeze, led 0-4 to 0-3 by the 11th minute.
A series of unanswered points for Mallow saw them open up a 0-12 to 0-3 lead by the 28th minute and a goal on the stroke of half-time really gave Carrig a mountain to climb in the second period. Mallow led on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-3 at the break.
But Carrigaline came out in the second half with great determination and really took the game to their opponents. They scored seven unanswered points to come within reach. When Stephen Gorman’s long delivery into the goalmouth deceived everyone to find the net and leave just a goal between the sides it set the scene for a nailbiting finish.
Carrigaline continued to apply pressure and points from David Drake (2) and Killian McSweeney meant that with five minutes to go, they were back on level terms at 1-14 apiece.
However, they then hit three wides and Mallow, sensing a reprieve, increased their efforts in the final minutes. To Carrig’s dismay they regained the lead in the 59th minute and another point in injury-time saw them emerge narrow winners.
Scorers for Carrigaline: D Drake 0-9 (0-6 frees), S Gorman 1-1, J Sheppard 0-2,

Anthony Conway Memorial Tournament (Fe 15 Football)

On Saturday 22nd Carrigaline GAA Club hosted the second football competition in honour of their late team manager Anthony Conway. The invited teams this year were Aghada, St. Nicks, Nemo and Sliabh Rua. The weather held out for the day and it proved to be a fantastic day out for everybody involved. After the league stages of the competition it became clear that Nemo and Carrigaline were to be the front runners in the Tournament. Carrigaline had many impressive performers on the day most notably C O Flynn, D Hickey, P Bresnan, M Molloy, J Kind, A O Reilly, T Kent and captain P Conway. Indeed P Conway led his troops to the “A” final with every player playing an important role along the way.

The “A” final was to be a tightly contested affair with Nemo talking a slender two point advantage into the break. P Bresnan gave a fine display at full back and the Nemo forwards never looked like getting a goal with C Allen rock solid in goal.
P Conway put over three frees in the final with ice cool composure and the hard working C O Flynn and T Kent also picked off fine points. Carrig lost the match on a scoreline of 0.9 to 0.5, but will have learned a lot from the day. St. Nicks won the “B” Final by one point after extra time. A word of thanks also to all those who worked hard behind the scenes to make the day such a fabulous success.

Carrigaline Panel: P Conway, S O Flynn, C O Flynn, C Malone, M Hanlon, L Hanlon, M Molloy, D McCarthy, A Cooney, G O Mahony, P Bresnan, S Murray, D Hickey, J Glennon, T Kent, D Kinsella, C Keating, K Murphy, C Allen, “Doc” O Callaghan, E Rynne, S Dwane, J Kind, M Lynch, R O Shea, C Mc Sweeney, K Kavavagh, A O Reilly, D O Sullivan.

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

Under-12 Hurlers Win SE Title and Advance in County
Carrigaline 7-11 Ballinhassig 1-5
Carrigaline under-12 hurlers travelled to Ballinhassig on Sunday September 2nd to take on the home side in the final of the SE Under-12 B Hurling Championship and they brought the trophy home following a great team display.
From the throw-in Carrig were quickly into their stride and raced into a 2-5 to 0-1 lead after the first quarter, the scores coming from corner-forwards Kieran Kavanagh (1-1) and Brian Coakley (1-2), centre-forward Darragh Corcoran (0-1) and midfielder Jack Murphy (0-1). Centre-back and captain, Stephen Maguire got in on the scoring when he won a great ball in defence, shrugged off two would-be tacklers and launched a long delivery from the centre of the field which deceived the Ballinhassig goalie and found the back of the net. A minute later, Brian Coakley notched his second goal and the writing was on the wall for the home side as Carrig led 4-5 to 0-2 at the break. In fairness to Ballinhassig they never gave up and had some excellent players throughout their team.
In the second half Carrigaline kept the pressure on the home side and used their full panel to record an impressive triumph. Wing-forward Aaron Tang hurled excellently throughout and scored three great points from play. Kieran Kavanagh and Brian Coakley completed their hat-tricks of goals. Two points from Darragh Corcoran and one from David Keating completed the Carrig scoring.
Each and every member of the Carrigaline panel played their part in this memorable victory. It compensated hugely for the disappointing defeat in the football final at the beginning of the summer. The hard work put in by the players and their mentors over the last couple of months certainly paid dividends on this occasion.
Luke Garvin was very solid in goal and he was fronted by an impressive full-backline of Sean O’Brien, Killian O’Mahony and Jared Fitzgerald. Substitute corner-backs Aodan Cotter and Danny Cremen played very well in the second half. A feature of the game was the long puck-outs of Killian O’Mahony which regularly put the Ballinhassig defence under pressure. The half-backline of Darragh Buckley, Stephen Maguire and Mark O’Shea was excellent all through and repelled many of the Ballinhassig attacks. Substitute, Daniel O’Reilly also played well in this line when introduced. Jack Murphy and Brian Lynch formed a hard-working midfield partnership and were never bettered by their opponents. The scoring exploits of the forward line have already been documented but wing-forward, Darren Sisk and full-forward, James Creagh also played a valuable part in the win, as did substitutes Cormac Hickey, Fiachra Hurley and Jason Kiely.
Following the game Ted McCarthy, Chairman of Carrigdhoun Bord-na-nÓg, presented the cup to Carrig captain Stephen Maguire, who made an excellent acceptance speech entirely ‘as Gaeilge’.
Carrig scorers: B Coakley (3-2), K Kavanagh (3-1), S Maguire (1-0),
D Corcoran (0-3), A Tang (0-3), J Murphy and D Keating (0-1 each).
Panel:
L Garvin, S O’Brien, K O’Mahony, J Fitzgerald, D Buckley, S Maguire, M O’Shea,
J Murphy, B Lynch, D Sisk, D Corcoran, A Tang, B Coakley, J Creagh, K Kavanagh, A Cotter, D Cremen, C Hickey, D Keating, F Hurley, J Kiely, D O’Reilly.
County Under-12 Hurling Quarter-Final
Carrigaline 9-7 Dromtarriffe 4-2
On Sunday morning last Carrig entertained Duhallow champions, Dromtarriffe, in the county quarter-final and following a very entertaining encounter, Carrigaline advanced to the semi-final. The scoreline does not do justice to the efforts of the visitors who shot a large number of wides, especially from frees in the first half.
Carrigaline got off to a bright start and after twenty minutes led 3-2 to no score.
During this period Darragh Corcoran, Brian Coakley, Aaron Tang and Brian Lynch were very prominent for Carrig. A great double-save by Luke Garvin kept the Carrig goal intact while Killian O Mahony, Mark O Shea and Darragh Buckley were hurling superbly in the backline. Dromtarriffe got their only score of the half in the 25th minute when they goaled from a close-in free. Carrig had a comfortable lead of 4-4 to
1-0 at half-time, a scoreline which certainly flattered them.
The visitors came out strongly for the second half and recorded the first two points of the half but in the 10th and 11th minutes Carrig struck for two goals which effectively ended the game as a contest. Dromtarriffe did not give in and were rewarded for their efforts with three goals. However, Carrig always had the edge and ran out convincing winners on a 9-7 to 4-2 scoreline.
Carrig scorers: D Corcoran (2-4), B Coakley (2-2), A Tang (1-1),
K Kavanagh, K O Mahony, D Sisk and A Cotter (1-0 each)
Panel:
Luke Garvin, Jared Fitzgerald, Killian O’Mahony, Danny Cremen, Darragh Buckley, Stephen Maguire, Mark O’Shea, Jack Murphy, Brian Lynch, Aodán Cotter, Darragh Corcoran, Aaron Tang, Brian Coakley, James Creagh, Kieran Kavanagh, Darren Sisk, David Keating, Sean O Brien, Fiachra Hurley, Jason Kiely, Daniel O’Reilly.

E Under 16 C Hurling Championship
Tracton 1-13 Carrigaline 2-6

Carrigaline travelled to near neighbours Tracton for this eagerly anticipated Championship clash. Carrigaline made a statement of intent with some early scores with C Malone picking the first point. S Masterson drove to the net midway through the first half through a melee of players to put Carrig in the driving position. C Allen got two well taken scores in the first period from a 65 and a well worked combination with C O Flynn. Indeed both midfielders were to the fore and dominated in this sector in the opening period. O Finn and M Dwane dominated the full back line with E Moynihan rock solid in goal and Tracton were restricted to attempting to score from out the field. However, Carrigaline’s ill judged tackling resulted in some soft frees and giveaway scores.
Tracton trailed by a point on the restart but they began to find their range more regularly in the second period. Carrig were still in a good position due to the fine play of J Kind, P Conway, N Martin and P Bresnan. M Lynch scored 1-2 in the second period to keep Tracton at bay. However injuries to key players J Kind, C Malone and C Allen restricted Carrigaline and turned the game in the Minane Bridge side’s favour. A fortunate goal for Tracton seven minutes before the end was the deciding score and Carrig couldn’t respond, having led for most of the game.

Panel: E Moynihan, P Bresnan, M Dwane, O Finn, J Kind, M O Donovan, D Hickey, C Allen, C O Flynn, N Martin, M Lynch, G O Mahony, S Masterson, C Malone,
P Conway, S Caffrey, A O Reilly, S Murray, C Keating.
Under-8 Football Challenge
Valley Rvs 2-1 Carrigaline 5-1
On a beautiful August evening, the under-8 footballers of Carrigaline and Valley Rovers served up a great evening’s entertainment before a large attendance at Brinny. Playing into the breeze in the first half Carrigaline started strongly with a goal by Shane Moran in the opening minutes. This helped settle Carrig and they went on to produce a solid first half performance with further scores coming from Ryan O’Regan and Olin Barry. After half time Carrigaline took control in mid-field and this helped them dominate for most of the second half. Great work by the Moran brothers, Shane & Paul, Mark Brosnan and Eanna Desmond saw Carrigaline set up a number of scoring chances, one in particular that led to a fine goal by Ryan O’Regan, who had a great game for Carrigaline. Valley Rovers started to come into the game in the closing minutes and added 2 goals (one from a well taken penalty) and a point to leave the final score Carrigaline 5-1 Valley Rovers 2-1.
Team: Tomas O’Donoghue, James Roche, Dylan Cooney, Paul Moran, Mark Brosnan (0-1), Eanna Desmond, Olin Barry (1-0), Shane Moran(1-0), Charlie Leahy, Ryan O’Regan (3-0), Ian O’Donoghue, Jack McIntyre.
