CARRIGALINE QUALIFY FOR TWO FINALS

In what has turned out to the most dramatic week in the long history of carrigaline Hurling and Football Club, we now have two teams, Intermediate Football and U21 Hurling, into County Finals. Three semi finals in a week was a lot to ask of the teams especially as a large number of players were on both panels, but a sensational 22 yard free from Tony Murphy in the U21 game saw him goal and Carrigaline take victory in and when the same player brought both teams level with eight minutes left on the clock there was only going to be one outcome, another hard fought victory. Both sets of team management and players must be complimented for their never say die attitude over the course of the three games which bring the Carrigaline Club closer to the Holy Grail of an adult County Title. Add to that the fact that our U16 team are also contesting a County Football Final in the near future bodes well for the club in the long term in both hurling and football. The Intermediate Football final will be the first game to be played on Saturday evening next in Pairc Ui Rinn at 8pm (keep an eye on the notice board for any changes) while the U21 Hurling game has still to be fixed. So we are calling on the people of Carrigaline to come out and support the teams starting with Saturday evenings game.

CARRIGALINE 1-8 CILL NA MARTRA 0-9
This was a tough encounter with few scoring chances. Cill Na Martra were first out of the blocks in this game and by the 16th minute they held a three point to no score lead. However carrigaline were not for panicking and they continued to defend well. Eoin Murphy had Carrigs first score of the half in the 18th minute, this was followed five minutes later by a long range Stephen O’Regan effort. Cill Na Martra added another point to their tally before an opportunist Barry O’Keeffe Goal in injury time put Carrig a point to the good. Cill Na Martra were not to be outdone and levelled the game with a free at the end of the half to leave the half time score 1-2 to 0-5.
The second half was just as scrappy but no less exciting as both teams traded scores.
Cill Na Martra scored the first point of the half to regain the lead but a well fisted point from Eoin Murphy and a free from Barry O’Keeffe had the Carrig lads back in front. Cill Na Martra added another point from a free but this was quickly cancelled out by a Barry O’Keeffe score from play. Cill na Martra got the next two points to put them a point to the good with 13minutes remaining. The game continued to be played around the middle third of the field before Tony Murphys equalising point in the 22 minute of the half. Carrigaline were starting to dominate a were picking up the breaking ball and tackling and defending in packs. Peter Murphy with his first point of the game and then another Barry O’Keeffe free put carrig in command with time running out. To their credit carrig held firm and repelled all their opponents attacks to secure victory by a two point margin and scenes of jubilation. Carrigaline had many excellent performances on the night but Eoin O’Sullivan and Colin Lynch at the back, Stephen O’Regan at midfield, Barry O’Keeffe, Eoin Murphy and Tony Murphy up front were to the fore in all the good things from carrigaline in the game
Team: M Webb, K Forbes, N Hayes, K Blake, C Lynch, J Moran, E O’Sullivan, E O’Keeffe, S O’Regan, N Murphy, P Murphy, E Murphy, T O’Sullivan, K O’Keeffe, B O’Keeffe.
Subs: G Harrington, T Murphy, M Doody.

CARRIGALINE 1-12 MIDLETON 1-11
This by normal standards was a low scoring game of hurling but the scores were excellent when they came and the hurling by both teams especially in the second half was top notch. Stephen O’Regan started the ball rolling for Carrig in the second minute with his first point and this was followed by Stephen Corcorans first point from a free. Midleton answered with their first point before another Corcoran free extended Carrigs lead. Midleton then came storming into the game and hit three unanswered points which and would have had a certain goal only for a great block by Joe Moran. After another pointed free from Stephen Corcorcan Midleto again stretched their lead with three more points . Stephen O’Regan got his second point of the game to narrow the gap but disaster struck for Carrig in injury time when Midleton hit a goal and a point to leave carrig trailing at half time by 0-5 to 1-8.
Carrig upped their game considerably in the second half and thanks to the accurate free taking of Corcoran were whittling away into the Midleton lead. Both teams missed some excellent goal chances as the half wore on but Joe Moran who was outstanding throughout added two points from a free and a ‘65’ the game was back in the melting pot with time running out. Corcoran hit another point from a free to leave two between the sides with time almost up. In the very last attack of the game simon O’Brien won a free for Carrig just outside the Midleton ‘21’ to blast the winning goal past what seemed like most of the Midleton team on the line. A cruel way to win a game but never the less it was a well deserved victory for the Carrig lads who held their opponents to just three points in the second half.
Team: M Webb A Noonan, G Harrington, P Ronayne, J Walsh, C Hurley, J Moran, J Cowhig, C Lynch, T Murphy, W O’Brien, S O’Regan, S Corcoran, S O’Brien,

Street League Report (Hugh Kelleher)

Under-5’s & 6’s Challenge Matches v Ballygarvan

On Sunday October 14th the warring neighbours of Ballygarvan and Carrigaline met for the very first outing of both teams. 29 hardened Ballygarvan warriors travelled the road down along the Owenabue river and were met on the GAA field in Carrigaline by 51 Carrigaline Under 5’s & 6’s. The day was absolutely perfect for the hurling treat served up by both teams which consisted of three matches going on simultaneously. A large crowd which included granddads, nans, uncles, aunts, mums and dads watched the matches and gave support to all players whether they wore the red and white or blue and yellow. All games were played in true sporting fashion, all balls fought for and nothing or nobody let off lightly. This was their moment of glory, let no one forget that, and they didn’t leave anyone down, all shone in their own individual way to serve up a festival of hurling.
Thanks to Jennifer, Rose, Hillary, Stephanie and Diane under the leadership of Bernie and Sean who prepared “goodie bags” for the tired and exhausted warriors to collect on their way out after giving their all for 45 minutes of unrelenting hurling. Thanks to Jim and Anthony from Ballygarvan for bringing 29 sporting heroes and a lot of supporters to Carrigaline for the matches.
A couple of quotes heard on the line worth mentioning were “There wasn’t that crowd for the south east final”, “Some of the Junior teams should be made watch these games so they would know how to play it properly”, and last but not least
“Ah pity it’s over, I haven’t enjoyed myself at a match like this in a long time, weren’t they all brilliant.”
All that’s left to say is the 80 boys that played have given enjoyment on a fine October Sunday and long may it continue. Oh and if you wanted to know the score and who won, THE WINNERS WERE HURLING & SPORT.

The Carrigaline Street Leagues for the under 5’s, 6’s, 7’s and 8’s will finish up this weekend, Football on Saturday 20th and Hurling on Sunday 21st. Most of these lads have been training and playing matches in both codes since March and deserve a well earned rest. Thanks to all of the people that helped over the last seven months with training, refereeing, organising etc. and when you see a Street League match whether it be under 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 and the passion showed by the teams playing, you think “It’s worth it all to see the lads enjoying it, having fun, making friends and learning skills”. Slán.

City Under-13 Hurling League Quarter-final
Glen Rovers 6-11 Carrigaline 5-10
Carrig travelled to the Glen Field on Saturday last to play the home side in the Under-13 Hurling League quarter-final. Despite being short a number of regulars for a variety of reasons Carrig put in a great hour and were very unlucky not to come away with the spoils.
Full-back, Killian O’Mahony was in outstanding form, as was wing-back Stephen Maguire, midfielder Kevin O’Connell and team captain Jamie Depuis at centre-forward. Jamie was top-scorer with 1-5 to his credit while Kevin O’Connell got the score of the game when he pointed a side-line puck from a very acute angle. Darragh Corcoran was very much to the forefront in the scoring stakes, helping himself to 2-1.
Peter Mullane, at wing-forward scored a goal and two points. Darren Murphy, at corner-forward, chipped in with a great goal. When Carrig’s other wing-forward, Conor McGrath, had to retire injured early in the second half, it came as a huge blow as Conor was causing all sorts of trouble for the Glen defence throughout the first half which enabled Carrig to lead at the interval on the scoreline of 3-6 to 3-3.

Panel: Shane Griffin, Killian O’Mahony, Robert Foster, Brian Lynch, Stephen Maguire, Kevin O’Connell, Conor McGrath, Jamie Depuis, Peter Mullane, Jason Brady, Darren Murphy, Darragh Corcoran, David O’Donovan, Kevin Martin, Cian O Herlihy, Aidan O’Flynn, David O’Shea, David Canty.

SEMI FINAL DRAW

CARRIGALINE 1-11 CILL NA MARTRA 1-11
It’s still all to play for in this years Intermediate County Football Championship in what was an excellent game last Sunday in Carrigadroichid. Carrigaline will count themselves very unfortunate not to be preparing for a county final this week instead of another game against Cill na Martra. It what was easily their best performance of the year the Carrigaline lads were well on top if their game and took their scores excellently. Starting with the unusual format of playing Nicholas Murphy at wing forward Carrig were always to the fore, with the new midfield partnership of Stephen O’regan and Elliot O’Keeffe excelling. Nicholas Murphy had Carrigaline on the scoreboard early to equalise a Cill na Martra point and this was quickly followed up by a score from brother Peter to give Carrigaline the lead for the first time. Cill na Martra added two points to their tally before Barry O’Keeffe scored a point from a free. Eoin Murphy then put Carrig ahead again after a great move involving Eoin O’Sullivan. Cill na Martra equalised again before a quick free from Peter Murphy found Tony O’Sullivan who was fouled in the square for a penalty. Tony stood up a took the penalty himself resulting in a goal for the Carrig lads. Cill na Martra finished the half with a point to leave two points 1-5 to 0-6 between the sides.
Again the second half was tit for tat with Carrig retaining their lead throughout. Peter Murphy was playing well at centre forward while Eoin O’Sullivan and sub C Lynchweredoing great work at wing back. The loss of Barry O’Keeffe was the first blow to Carrigaline when he was forced off injured but Carrig kept on moving forward with scores from Ken O’Keeffe, Eoin Murphy, and P Murphy. The game looked as if it was over when Eoin O’Sullivan kicked a free from the ‘45’ but unfortunately Cill na martra had other ideas and scored a goal and a point at the death to level proceedings at 1-11 to 1-11. Carrigaline had some excellent performances on the day so hopefully this will stand to them in the replay.
Team: M Webb, K Forbes, N Hayes, K Blake, R Keohane, J Moran, E O’Sullivan, E O’Keeffe, S O’Regan, N Murphy, P Murphy, E Murphy, T O’Sullivan, K O’Keeffe and B O’Keeffe.
Subs:C Lynch, T Murphy, G Harrington, D Twomey.

IMPORTANT DATES

Both teams deserve the best of support so we are calling on all club members and supporters to travel to the games and help bring Carrigaline to two County Finals.

Under-16 Footballers Advance to County Final
Carrigaline 2-11 St Finbarrs 0-10
Fresh from their respective triumphs at divisional level Carrigaline and the Barrs clashed in the semi-final of the County Premier Under-16 Football Championship at Shanbally on Saturday last. On a beautiful autumn day both teams served up a cracker of a game which kept the attendance highly entertained. At the end of the hour it was Carrig who advanced to the County Final, having given a performance that warmed the hearts of their mentors and supporters.
After the first quarter few in the attendance would have predicted the final outcome, as at that point the Barrs led 0-6 to 0-1 and were the sharper team throughout the field. However, Carrig awoke from their slumber and proceeded to take the game to their opponents in the lead-up to the interval. Running at the Barrs defence and playing superb combined football, Carrig turned things around with two well-worked goals from David Drake and Oisin Finn. A super save by Sean Mellett just before half-time kept the Carrig goal intact and ensured that they went into the break leading by 2-4 to 0-6.
The Barrs began the second half in determined fashion and had the first point of the half. However, the Carrig defence were keeping a tight rein on their opponents and with David Spillane putting the shackles on the Barrs danger-man, Carrig never looked in serious danger. Carrigaline got the next two points and from there to the end they were always in control.
Goalkeeper, Sean Mellett and corner-back, David Spillane both shone in an excellent Carrig defence while at mid-field Wayne Bruton and James Sheppard, once they got to grips with their opponents, gave Carrig a decisive edge. Up front Liam O’Regan, Kaelan Spillane and Dylan O’Keeffe worked unselfishly and took up great positions to make and take scores

Carrigaline scorers: David Drake (1-4), Oisin Finn (1-0), Dylan O’Keeffe (0-3), Kaelan Spillane (0-2), Wayne Bruton (0-2).

SE Under-13 Hurling
Ballinhassig 3-3 Carrigaline 4-13
Carrigaline travelled to Ballinhassig on Friday last to take on the home side in the SE Under-13 Hurling League. Carrig played superbly to record a well-merited win and take a huge step in qualification for the final of the competition.
The first half was a closely-contested affair and at the interval Carrig led on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-1.
In the second half Carrig really got into their stride and got some excellent scores to run out winners by a margin of thirteen points. Conor Gould (2), Jamie Depuis and David O’Donovan were the Carrig goalscorers while Cillian McIntyre, Peter Mullane, Darren Murphy, Darragh Corcoran, Anthony O’Donnell, Conor Gould and Jamie Depuis accounted for the points total.
Best for Carrigaline in a great team performance were Peter Mullane, Conor Gould, Jamie Depuis and Paudie Kingston. This is Paudie’s first year with the team and he has made tremendous progress.

Panel: Shane Griffin, Killian O’Mahony, Robert Foster, Brian Lynch, Cillian McIntyre, Stephen Maguire, Kevin O’Connell, Paudie Kingston, Conor Gould, Conor McGrath, Jamie Depuis, Peter Mullane, Anthony O’Donnell, Jason Brady, Darren Murphy, Darragh Corcoran, David O’Donovan, Kevin Martin, Cian O Herlihy,

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA
Under-16 Footballers Regain SE Title
Carrigaline 3-16 Valley Rovers 1-6
On Sunday last at Riverstick Carrigaline took on their great rivals, Valley Rovers, in the final of the SE Under-16 A Football Championship. This was a repeat of last year’s decider which was won by the Rovers. On this occasion, however, Carrig took the honours on a 3-16 to 1-6 scoreline.
From the throw-in Carrig’s midfield pairing of Wayne Bruton and James Sheppard took a firm grip and provided a strong platform throughout for ultimate success.
Up front, David Drake was in superb scoring form and had six points on the board after the opening quarter. He was ably assisted by Dylan O’Keeffe who had 1-1 to his credit before Valley Rovers opened their account with a point. Three more points for Carrig left the half-time score standing at 1-10 to 0-1.
Half-backs, Sean Conlon and David Spillane were in total control as Carrig kept up the pressure in the second half. Further goals from David Drake and Dylan O’Keeffe and points from Kaelan Spillane saw Carrig extend their lead and give them a comfortable sixteen-point winning margin. Oisin Finn, Niall Creed-Nolan and team captain Liam O’Regan were excellent throughout in a magnificent team performance.
