BARRYS NAMED HALL OF FAME WINNERS
Tuesday, February 26th, 2008At the Annual Dinner Dance last Saturday night in the Carrigaline Court Hotel, Club stalwarts John and Joan Barry joined the list of winners of the Hall of Fame Award, which is kindly sponsored by the McGrath Family. They are much deserved winners of this award as the work they did for the Underage Section of the club went way and above the call of duty. Whether it was the washing of jerseys, transporting of players or just travelling to matches they could always be relied upon. They looked after the Bingo every Sunday night without fail and when it came to raising funds no stone was left unturned. Catering for functions and care of the pitch were also jobs they helped to look after as no job was too big or too small. The ovation they received on the night was second to none and showed the popularity of the judge’s decision. Congratulations to John and Joan and thank you for your dedication. Club President Daithi O’Donovan presented John and Joan with their award while Treasurer Christine Jenkinson presented Joan with a bouquet of flowers. The Dinner dance in general was a great success; thanks must go to the Carrigaline Court Hotel for the excellent meal and service while the Ian Hendrick Band kept everybody entertained with some excellent music. The All Ireland Scor na nOg Figure Dancers who retained their title in Athlone last weekend gave a display of their talents after the meal. Congratulations to the girls, their trainers Miah Walsh and Maria Kiely-Walsh and Barry Cogan who looks after all things cultural within the club.
Presentation of medals to the U21 Hurlers and Intermediate Footballers was done by South East Board Chairman John Twomey and Club Sponsor Stephen McCarthy. Intermediate football manager Michael Meaney made a presentation to outgoing coach Michael O’Connor on behalf of the players and selectors. Michael coached the team to the Intermediate County Final last year but due to work commitments is unable to continue on this year. Our All Ireland football and hurling participants, Nicholas Murphy (Senior Football), Conor Hurley (Minor hurling) and Tony Barry (Minor Hurling Selector) received a small token from the club in recognition of their achievements. Guests on the night included Club President Daithi O’Donovan and his wife May, Club Sponsor Stephen McCarthy, South East Board Chairman John Twomey and his wife Kay, Parish Priest Fr. Bertie O’Mahoney and the Scor na nOg All Ireland Champions.
On the playing front it was another good weekend for the three teams that were involved in games. The Junior A footballers were first into action on Saturday when they played Kinsale in Carrigaline. They recorded another good victory which included four goals. Tony Murphy was in good form in midfield and chipped in with 2-2 while Marc Doody and Cormac Creed Nolan scored the other goals. The final score 4-9 to 0-7. The Junior B Footballers recorded their first victory of the campaign with a 2-15 to 0-5 scoreline. Again the makeup of the team was different to last week but goals from a Simon Deady penalty and Alan “ Bubbles” Murphy plus good displays from Colin Corkery, Mickey Quinn, Dave O’Riordan and Brian Scanlon. The Minor B Footballers continued their good early season form with a victory over near neighbours Shamrocks. This team is going great guns so far and play some very good football.
Congratulations must go to Club Vice Chairman Jim Forbes on the announcement that he is the main candidate to be next PRO of the Munster Council. This will be another top position for Jim and richly deserved. Also to junior player Eoin Murphy who has started taking charge of games at junior level while still staring for the Junior B Footballers. Hopefully he will enjoy the experience and maybe move up the ranks in time to come.
Again there will be plenty of games on this weekend including the Intermediate Footballers and the Premier Minor Footballers who will be starting their campaigns so keep an eye on the notice boards and the website for information on these games.
