BARRYS NAMED HALL OF FAME WINNERS

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

At the Annual Dinner Dance last Saturday night in the Carrigaline Court Hotel, Club stalwarts John and Joan Barry joined the list of winners of the Hall of Fame Award, which is kindly sponsored by the McGrath Family. They are much deserved winners of this award as the work they did for the Underage Section of the club went way and above the call of duty. Whether it was the washing of jerseys, transporting of players or just travelling to matches they could always be relied upon. They looked after the Bingo every Sunday night without fail and when it came to raising funds no stone was left unturned. Catering for functions and care of the pitch were also jobs they helped to look after as no job was too big or too small. The ovation they received on the night was second to none and showed the popularity of the judge’s decision. Congratulations to John and Joan and thank you for your dedication. Club President Daithi O’Donovan presented John and Joan with their award while Treasurer Christine Jenkinson presented Joan with a bouquet of flowers. The Dinner dance in general was a great success; thanks must go to the Carrigaline Court Hotel for the excellent meal and service while the Ian Hendrick Band kept everybody entertained with some excellent music. The All Ireland Scor na nOg Figure Dancers who retained their title in Athlone last weekend gave a display of their talents after the meal. Congratulations to the girls, their trainers Miah Walsh and Maria Kiely-Walsh and Barry Cogan who looks after all things cultural within the club.
Presentation of medals to the U21 Hurlers and Intermediate Footballers was done by South East Board Chairman John Twomey and Club Sponsor Stephen McCarthy. Intermediate football manager Michael Meaney made a presentation to outgoing coach Michael O’Connor on behalf of the players and selectors. Michael coached the team to the Intermediate County Final last year but due to work commitments is unable to continue on this year. Our All Ireland football and hurling participants, Nicholas Murphy (Senior Football), Conor Hurley (Minor hurling) and Tony Barry (Minor Hurling Selector) received a small token from the club in recognition of their achievements. Guests on the night included Club President Daithi O’Donovan and his wife May, Club Sponsor Stephen McCarthy, South East Board Chairman John Twomey and his wife Kay, Parish Priest Fr. Bertie O’Mahoney and the Scor na nOg All Ireland Champions.
On the playing front it was another good weekend for the three teams that were involved in games. The Junior A footballers were first into action on Saturday when they played Kinsale in Carrigaline. They recorded another good victory which included four goals. Tony Murphy was in good form in midfield and chipped in with 2-2 while Marc Doody and Cormac Creed Nolan scored the other goals. The final score 4-9 to 0-7. The Junior B Footballers recorded their first victory of the campaign with a 2-15 to 0-5 scoreline. Again the makeup of the team was different to last week but goals from a Simon Deady penalty and Alan “ Bubbles” Murphy plus good displays from Colin Corkery, Mickey Quinn, Dave O’Riordan and Brian Scanlon. The Minor B Footballers continued their good early season form with a victory over near neighbours Shamrocks. This team is going great guns so far and play some very good football.
Congratulations must go to Club Vice Chairman Jim Forbes on the announcement that he is the main candidate to be next PRO of the Munster Council. This will be another top position for Jim and richly deserved. Also to junior player Eoin Murphy who has started taking charge of games at junior level while still staring for the Junior B Footballers. Hopefully he will enjoy the experience and maybe move up the ranks in time to come.
Again there will be plenty of games on this weekend including the Intermediate Footballers and the Premier Minor Footballers who will be starting their campaigns so keep an eye on the notice boards and the website for information on these games.

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

Foster Fires in Five
City Under-14 FL2 St Vincents 3-4 Carrigaline 13-11

Carrigaline Under-14 footballers got their City League campaign off to a great start on Saturday last when they made a successful trip to the northside to take on St Vincents.
Robert Foster was in scintillating form and found the net on five occasions before taking over as the Carrig netminder for the final fifteen minutes. Robert had two goals in the first half which helped Carrigaline into a 2-6 to 1-1 interval lead. He added a further 3-3 in the second half before taking up the goalkeeping duties. A Cian Lynch hat-trick and further goals from Ryan O’Sullivan(2), Greg Nestor, Kevin Harrington and David O’Shea helped seal a comprehensive Carrig win.
Best for Carrigaline in a magnificent team display were Robert Foster, Greg Nestor, Cian Lynch and the two Shane Griffins.
Panel of players: David O’Shea, Conor McGrath, Peter Mullane (capt), Jason Brady, Shane Griffin, Jamie De Puis, Paudie Kingston, Killian McIntyre, Shane Griffin, David O’Donovan, Greg Nestor, Kevin O’Connell, Kevin Martin, Robert Foster, Darren Murphy, Cian Lynch, Ryan O’Sullivan, Kevin Harrington, Anthony O’Donnell.

City Under-15 FL1 Ballincollig 5-10 Carrigaline 2-8

The Under-15 footballers got their campaign underway on Saturday February 16th with a trip to Ballincollig. Carrig started well and matched their opponents for the opening quarter. Ballincollig hit a purple patch in the latter stages of the first half and notched 3-5 without reply. Carrigaline regrouped at the interval and came out more focused for the second half. They matched a very good Ballincollig side score-for-score in the second period but could not reduce the half-time deficit and the home side ran out worthy winners.

Na Piarsaigh 1-6 Carrigaline 2-9

Carrigaline under-15’s were on the road again on Saturday last when they travelled to take on Na Piarsaigh in round 2 of the league. Carrig put in a good honest hour’s football embellished with a large amount of skill to pull out a victory against a strong Na Piarsaigh team.
From the throw in and with the wind at their backs they ran at the Northsiders and with excellent point taking from Michael Lynch raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead. Then a Na Piarsaigh breakaway led to a fierce shot for goal which was superbly saved and tipped over the crossbar by the excellent Jamie Buckley. The half-time score was 0-6 to 0-2 but the question was, would it be enough playing against a strong breeze in the second half?
Na Piarsaigh piled on the pressure early in the second half and knocked over two points and then disaster; a long range free kick somehow nestled into the back of the Carrig net.

Under pressure, the Carrig defence led by Stephen Dwane dug deep and with some tigerish defending began to pass the ball up field through Eoin Moyihnan, Cillian McSweeney and Kevin Kavanagh. A foot-block by a Na Piarsaigh player inside the square and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Stephen Dwane and he blasted the ball to the net. This put Carrig two points to the good, a lead they never relinquished as they tagged on another goal from Michael Lynch and a point from Kevin Kavanagh .
There were also good performances from Kevin Conlon, Andrew Thomas and Daniel Coffey. The next game is on Sat 1st March at home to Douglas at 3pm.
Team: Jamie Buckley, Michael Quinn, Eoin O’Donnell, Darragh O’Sullivan, David Drinan, Kevin Kavanagh, Robert O’Shea, Stephen Dwane, Cillian McSweeney, Dylan O’Brien, Michael Lynch, Andrew Thomas, Kevin Conlon, Eoin Moynihan, Daniel Coffey, Conor Cremin, Anthony O’Reilly, Eoin O’Donovan.

JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS SEE OFF BALLINHASSIG
JAFL CARRIGALINE 4-9 BALLINHASSIG 0-9
New manager Tom Burke and the Junior A footballers got their 2008 season off to the best possible start with a win against a gritty Ballinhassig team. With a large group of backs to pick from the placing of Peter Ronayne at corner forward proved to be very profitable for the Carrigaline lads as he bagged two goals on the day. Even though it was the first game of the year and an experimental team everybody worked hard to ensure that the game was won. The Carrigaline backs were always vigilant especially Brian Irwin who had an excellent game at full back. Player manager Tom Burke and Danny Twomey were doing well at midfield while all the forwards were showing well for the ball. David O’Regan and John Mullaney were the other goal scorers while Cormac Creed Nolan and Niall Coakley also took some good scores.
TEAM: J O’Reilly, J Cowhig, B Irwin, R Barrett, C Touhy, G Harrington, A Noonan, T Burke, D Twomey, M O’Sullivan, N Coakley, D O’Regan, J Mullaney, C Creed Nolan, P Ronayne.
JBFL CARRIGALINE 0-3 PASSAGE 0-15
The Junior B footballers were not so lucky in their league game against Passage on Sunday morning. Despite a good start the Carrig lads were left to play second fiddle to a strong Passage outfit. The team showed a number of changes from last week but it wasn’t to be their day as they never got into their stride.
TEAM: A Murphy, J Roberts, A O’Keeffe, T Hobbins, J Walsh, D Riordan, P Kiernan, E Cogan, B Scanlon, R Barrett, D Fleming, W Ronayne, S Rath, TJ Cronin, E Harrington. Subs: K Staunton, E Murphy.
MBFL CARRIGALINE 4-9 BALLYGARVAN 0-5
An excellent second half by the Carrig lads’ ensured victory was theirs in this minor B league clash on Sunday. Three second half goals meant that Carrigaline ran out comfortable winners in their second game of the season. They started slowly in the first half and were two points down after 10 minutes. But some good determined play for the rest of the half especially by Kevin Kidney who helped to create 1-2 the goal coming from Oisin Finn meant that Carrig had a half time lead of 1-5 to 0-2. The second half belonged to Carrigaline and there were some excellent performances from S Conlon, N Creed Nolan, B Twomey and J Corcoran. The goals were provided by Brian Dorgan, Eoin Conway and Mark O’Mahoney while Oisin Finn ended up with a personal tally of 1-5.
TEAM: J Bermingham, E Horgan, J Corcoran, M Dwane, B Twomey, C Malone, J O’Shea, T O’Connor, S Conlon, C Sisk, L O’Regan, E Conway, T Byrne, K Kidney, O Finn. Subs: N Creed Nolan, G Harrington, B Dorgan, M O’Mahoney.

THE SEASON BEGINS
The 2008 season has finally begun with the Junior B Footballers and the Minor B Footballers starting their leagues. Even though their results were contrasting it was great to see to teams eager to be playing and hopefully it augers well for the season ahead.
CITY DIVISION J2FL
CARRIGALINE 2-5 ST. VINCENTS 0-12
This was definitely a game that the Carrig lads could have won but for some missed opportunities towards the end of the game. The first half was dominated by the City team and they had eight points on the board before an Eoin Harrington point set the killer B’s on their way. Despite some sustained pressure nearing the end of the first half Carrig were still having trouble in front of the goal until they were awarded a penalty which was expertly converted by Eamon Cogan to leave the half time score 0-9 to 1-1 in St. Vincents favour.
The second half began with a flurry of chances with Carrig finding the target difficult to find. But with the defence holding strong thanks to some sterling play from David O’Riordan, John Walsh and John Roberts Carrig were always going to make it tough for their opponents. As the half wore on the Carrigaline lads eat into the Vincent’s lead and thanks to an Alan ‘bubbles’ Murphy goal with ten minutes remaining Carrig were only a point in arrears. Two St. Vincent points were cancelled out to still leave the minimum between the teams and with time running out unfortunately Carrig missed a couple of frees which could have given them the draw but it was not to be. Well done to the lads who played on the day and hopefully more will turn out as the year goes on.
Team: S O’Hanlon, T Hobbins, D O’Riordan, E Murphy, W Ronayne, J Walsh, J Roberts, E Cogan, R Barrett, M Quinn, E Harrington, B Scanlon, S Rath, K Staunton, A Murphy.
CITY/SOUTH EAST MBFL
CARRIGALINE 1-7 ST. FINBARRS 1-6
As the score line suggests this was a tight game with the Carrig lads coming out on top by a single point. Carrig can thank the industrious play of full back Jamie Corcoran, midfielders Adrian Lynch and Tony O’Connor and forwards Timmy Byrne and Kevin Kidney for this morale boosting victory. Top scorer on the day was Eoin Conway with a tally of 1-1. A great start for this young team and hopefully they can stay together and put a run of results together.
Team: J Bermingham, B Dorgan, J Corcoran, G Harrington, B Twomey, S O’Halloran, J O’Shea, A Lynch, T O’Connor, N Creed Nolan, L O’Regan, E Conway, T Byrne, K Kidney, M O’Mahoney. Subs E Horgan, P McGrath, C Sisk, M Malone, C Allen.
Dinner Dance 2008
Another reminder that the annual Dinner Dance is on Sat 23rd Feb in the Carrigaline Court Hotel at 8pm. Music is by the Ian Hendrick band and a great night is assured. U16 LEAGUE FINAL

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

City Under-16 Football League Final (2007)
Nemo Rangers 0-7 Carrigaline 0 - 5
In what can only be described as atrocious weather conditions at Trabeg on Monday February 4th Nemo were narrow winners over Carrigaline in the City Under-16 Football League Final (2007).
Both sides tried to play attacking football in terrible conditions but only the team playing with the elements scored in either half. Carrigaline had the advantage in the first half and were a little slow to settle. Nemo adapted better to the conditions and started the brighter but missed a number of chances.
Carrigaline got into their rhythm and began to control the play. Cian Sisk opened the scoring after 15 minutes and they went on to hit three more scores in the next five minutes. David Spillane set up Dylan O’Keeffe for a point and almost immediately Kaelan Spillane made it 0-3 to no score.
Kaelan who had an impressive first-half, got his second and with five minutes to go to half-time Niall Creed-Nolan made it 0-5 to nil following good work by Dylan O’Keeffe.
Carrigaline turned to face the elements with this five point lead and knew they would have a battle on their hands to stay in front.
Nemo started the second-half in determined mood and almost immediately had two points on the board. They had the margin down to two after six minutes and things were not looking good for Carrig.
However Carrigaline dug in and took the game to their opponents, playing exciting, attacking football in very difficult conditions. Despite Carrig’s best efforts, Nemo drew level and were looking like winners. Carrig defended brilliantly and in a rare attack Sean Conlon was unlucky to see his goal-bound shot superbly saved by the Nemo keeper.
Nemo took the lead for the first time in the 50th minute and two minutes later they went two in front. Carrig never gave up and fought to the end. They almost snatched victory when David Spillane hit the upright with two minutes to go. It was not to be and Nemo held out to take the title on a final scoreline of 0-7 to 0-5.
Scorers for Carrig: K Spillane (0-2), C Sisk, D O’Keeffe, N Creed-Nolan 0-1 each,
Carrigaline S Mellet, C Allen, C Malone, P McGrath, S Conlon, C Barry, D Spillane, J Sheppard, S O’Halloran, C Sisk, L O’Regan, N Creed-Nolan, O Finn, K Spillane, D O’Keeffe
Subs: M Dwane for S Conlon, M Hanlon for C Sisk.

NIGHT FOR EDDIE A GREAT SUCCESS
The benefit night which was held for the late Eddie Cooney last Saturday night was a tremendous success and the size of the turn out was definitely testament to the esteem he was held. It was fantastic to see so many people from the community and beyond in the hall enjoying themselves and remembering Eddie in such a special way. A very sincere thanks to all those who bought tickets, donated prizes for the raffle and made tray loads of sandwiches. Entertainment on the night began with the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group who got the entire crowd involved in the various two handed dances, set dances and old time waltzes. They were followed by Robbie Foster and friends who kept the crowd going until Eddies brother Canice and his band Freedom played out the rest of the night to a full dance floor.
CLUB AGM
The AGM of the club was held the previous Sunday afternoon in the club. Though the attendance was small there was plenty of lively debate during the meeting. The meeting itself started with a minutes silence in memory of the late Eddie Cooney. Club Chairman addressed the attendance and spoke about his highlights during the year and also thanked those who took on various roles within the club during the past year. The Secretaries report was next to be read and frank Crowley gave us his usual comprehensive analysis of the activities within the club during the previous twelve months. Some highlights from the year included two County Finals and a County semi final appearance in the adult section and the thrilling victory by the clubs Under16 team to capture the premier County title for the first time. Nicholas Murphy played in the All Ireland Football Final and Conor Hurley played in the All Ireland Minor Hurling Final On the cultural side of things the Scor na Nog team won the All Ireland Figure dancing title up in Athlone, while Aisling Cogan and the Rince Foirne team won County titles.
Club Treasurer Christine Jenkinson and Finbarr Harrington were next up to explain the clubs finances and when this detailed report was completed it was time for the Election of the incoming Officers. All the Officers were returned en bloc with John Keane joining the Executive as Registrar. The ratification of the Intermediate Managers was next on the agenda with Michael Meaney continuing as football manager while there was no nomination for a hurling equivalent it was left to the incoming committee to seek one out. There were no motions so it was straight to A.O.B. and there was a number of questions from the floor which were addressed by the top table and the meeting ended.
Executive Committee 2008
Chairman Billy Walsh, Vice Chairman Jim Forbes, Hon Sec Frank Crowley, Treasurer Christine Jenkinson, PRO Alan Murphy, Registrar John Keane, Field Maintenance Sean Cooney, Youth Officer Bernard O’Mahoney, Facilities Officer PJ Greene.
