Carrigaline Under-Age GAA

As we approach the end of autumn the playing fields are still a hive of activity.
The under-16’s had a great run in the football championship before succumbing to Carrigtwohill in the county semi-final on Saturday last.
The under-15 hurlers were beaten by Blackrock in the City League semi-final while the under-14’s are in the knock-out stages of the Carrigdhoun hurling and football leagues.
The under-12 footballers had a great win over Shamrocks in the Carrigdhoun League Final. The hurlers went down narrowly to Mayfield in the city league semi-final but are continuing to train at Nemo Rangers indoor facility on Tuesday evenings between 6 and 7p.m.
The under-11 footballers hosted Moyle Rovers (Tipperary) in Carrigaline on October 5th and the following weekend enjoyed a trip to Tralee. On Saturday last the under-11 hurlers lost out to the Barrs in the City League Final after a thrilling game.
The Gaelscoil footballers have qualified for the Sciath na Scol final and we wish them the best of luck in the forthcoming decider. Congratulations also to the footballers of Scoil Mhuire Lourdes who enjoyed a good campaign in Section 1 of the Sciath competitions.
We send special get well wishes to under-12 mentor Ken Kiely and hope to see him restored to full health very soon.

County Premier Under-16 Football Championship

Carrigaline 2-1 Mallow 1-3
The under-16 footballers secured a last-gasp victory over visitors Mallow on Saturday October 11th in the quarter-final of the County Premier Under-16 Football Championship. The game was played in difficult conditions as the turf was slippery underfoot due to recent rain. This contributed to a low scoring affair, but both sides were also guilty of poor shooting and decision making in front of goal. Michael Lynch scored just before the break to leave Mallow up by one point at the interval, 0-2 to 0-1.

The second half provided more of the same as both sides found scores hard to register. A Cian O Flynn piledriver flew into the top of the Mallow net to give Carrig a two-point lead early in the second half. Mallow responded late in the game with a well taken goal followed by a point. Things looked grim for Carrig, but their never-say-die spirit was rewarded when Diarmuid Hickey found the net with a powerful shot that flew over the keeper’s head and nestled in the corner of the net leaving them a point to the good at the death. All the backs excelled in the difficult conditions especially Peter Bresnan, Chris Allen, Cillian McSweeney and Stephen Dwane, with Stephen O Flynn very solid in goal. Pauric Conway, Diarmuid Hickey and Morgan Hanlon also had good games. Carrig worked hard all over the field and just about deserved to advance to a semi-final meeting with Carrigtwohill.

Carrigaline 1-5 Carrigtwohill 1-13

Carrigaline’s championship campaign ended in a defeat to a strong Carrigtwohill outfit at Ballincollig on Saturday last. Carrig started quite brightly with the first move of the game resulting in an A Healy point. Carrigtwohill responded and didn’t take long to register points on the board. Indeed the East Cork outfit had a fine free taker who capitalised on any frees given by the referee. M Lynch was the pick of the forwards in the opening period and scored 1.1 from play. At half time Carrig were in a reasonably good position, only two points down.

The second half didn’t produce the required fight back as Carrig were to come up short on this occasion. Much of the credit must go to the East Cork side’s defending. Carrigaline found it increasingly hard to breach the opposition rearguard. The battle in the midfield sector was ferocious and J Kind won hard ball all day. C Allen dominated at full back. However, any frees given away by the Carrig backs were punished by the Carrigtwohill free taker. Carrigaline’s forwards seemed to run out of ideas up front and were put under ferocious pressure by the Carrigtwohill backs. When the opposition goaled 10 minutes before the end it ensured that the other Carrig reached the final. Carrigaline can feel very satisfied with their progress this season and won the South East football championship after two great games with keen rivals, Valley Rovers. They only tasted defeat in their fifth championship match. There is much to build on and if continued improvement follows then this group of players are sure to achieve further success in the future.

Panel: S O Flynn, P Bresnan, C McSweeney, S Caffrey, S Dwane, L Hanlon, M Hanlon, J Kind, D Hickey, C O Flynn, T Kent, A Healy, P Conway, M Lynch C Malone, G O Mahony, D Kinsella, M Molloy, K Creagh, S Murray, J Glennon, D McCarthy, E Moynihan, D O Sullivan, A O Reilly, J Buckley, M O Grady.

Street League Hurling Finals
The Street League finals for hurling were held on Sunday 28th September and the Carrigaline Pipe Band led the teams onto the field of battle. This is one of the big highlights of the year for players and parents alike, the boys with the chest out posing for the cameras amid the cheering and applause from supporters. The parents took over managing the teams for the day.
Over One hundred and fifty boys aged between five and ten took part in the hurling finals this year. They all played magnificently and were presented with trophies by the chairman of the Under-Age Section, Bernie O’Mahony. All received fun packs as well to help rebuild the energy. Refreshments were provided for everyone present and a special thanks to all the ladies who contributed to make it a successful venture. The weather was kind and all concerned had an enjoyable day.
We would like to say a sincere thank you to the Carrigaline Pipe Band, who really enhance the Street League finals and make them a wonderful and special day for the lads. The biggest cheer is kept for the lads themselves, who gave their all in the name of sport and served up a treat to all present.

Minors reach Premier Football Final

MINOR FOOTBALLERS SECURE FINAL SPOT
CARRIGALINE 1-7 BISHOPSTOWN 0-8
A goal in the second half for Carrigaline, their only score of the half and a penalty miss by Bishopstown in the same half were among some of the main talking points in this game. Carrigaline won this game on pure determination, having played so well in the first half and taken some excellent scores they were on the back foot in the second half but their dogged determination to win has seen them through to the final. Even though it took time for Carrigaline to settle they had an early point on the board thanks to David Drake after his free kick had initially rebounded off the post. Bishopstown were ahead in the eight minute for the first and only time in the game thanks to two points. It took Carrigaline and David Drake thirteen minutes to equalise but during that time they were starting to gain the upper hand and were unlucky not to have scored two goals. The same player then struck a beauty of a point from the wing in the 24th minute to stretch Carrigs lead. Carrig were definitely on the up now and in control of the game. Liam O’Regan put over a free from the right hand side and the resultant kick out was won by James McCarthy who passed it to Simon O’Brien to add to Carrigaline’s tally. A short Carrigaline ’45 from Wayne Bruton found its way to James Shepherd who put over a neat point and the Carrigaline scoring for the half was finished by an easy David Drake free. Those left the half time score 0-7 to 0-2 in Carrigaline’s favour.
The second half was a tough one for the Carrig lads as they had to do a great deal of defending to keep Bishopstown at bay. By the 9th minute Bishopstown had added two more points to the score line in between a couple of Carrigaline misses. Then in the 11th minute Bishopstown were awarded a penalty and much to Carrigaline’s relief it hit the butt of the post and cleared to safety. Bishopstown kept up the pressure and added a further point in the 14th minute. Then in the 19th minute came Carrigaline’s only score of the half, a long ball into the heart of the Bishopstown defence was latched onto by David Drake he in turn found Simon O’Brien who calmly slotted the ball to the back of the Bishopstown net. This set up a terrific finish with Bishopstown coming back strongly at Carrigaline in search of the all important goal. The goal was never to come and even though Bishopstown had three points between the 22nd and 29th minutes they could not breach a strong Carrigaline defence.
Carrigaline defended very well from number fifteen back and this was the main reason they were victorious and are deserving of their place in the final which is provisionally fixed for the 25th Oct in Pairc Uí Rinn against St Michaels. Carrigaline had many excellent performers on the night and even though they had only one score in the second half they still did enough to merit reaching the final.
Team: S Mellet, T O’Connor, D Bagnall, S Noonan, S Conlon, C Barry, D Spillane, D O’Regan, J Shepherd, L O’Regan, D Drake, J McCarthy, W Bruton, S O’Brien, D O’Keeffe. Subs: S O’Halloran, A Lynch, C O’Flynn.

CARRIGALINE CROWNED COUNTY INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONS

CHAMPIONS
The day of reckoning finally came as the Carrigaline Hurlers won the 2008 Evening Echo sponsored Intermediate Hurling Championship against Bandon in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The scenes on the pitch afterwards were absolutely fantastic as fans both young and old streamed onto the pitch to celebrate with their heroes. Peter Murphy became the first Carrigaline man to lift the trophy for the club and the sight of Club President Daithí O’Donovan holding the trophy aloft brought another huge cheer from the crowd.
The homecoming in Carrigaline on Monday night was a fitting tribute to the team and especially the manager Jerry O’Sullivan. The large number of people who lined the streets gave the players a welcome they never expected. The open topped bus followed the Carrigaline Pipe Band through the village were the team displayed the cup to the assembled crowd. There was another big crowd awaiting in the GAA Club when they arrived down and they were given a guard of honour by the Premier Minor Footballers who play Bishopstown on Wednesday night in the Semi Final of The County.
The Monday morning was filled with a tour of the local primary schools and the Community School. Each school gave the lads a terrific reception when they entered and the singing, Cheering and good luck banners all added to the occasion. After the Schools were finished it was on to the Hotel and a lunch which was very kindly sponsored by Barry and Peter Collins of the Carrigaline Court Hotel. Also attending the lunch were Club President Daithí O’Donovan and his wife May, Stephen McCarthy of Astra Construction who are the Clubs main sponsors and Barry Collins.

CARRIGALINE PROVE WORTHY CHAMPIONS
CARRIGALINE 1-13 BANDON 0-10
The Holy Grail that was the elusive first adult county title found its way to Carrigaline last Sunday afternoon after Carrigaline defeated Bandon in the Final of the 2008 Intermediate Hurling Championship. Carrigaline were worthy champions on the day as they settled into the game from the very beginning. A point in the first minute from the influential Simon O’Brien set the tone in a game were Carrigaline always held the upper hand. In the second minute Joe Moran struck over a fine free from his own 65 to keep the early pressure on. Despite their period of dominance Carrigaline were finding scores hard to come by as the Bandon defence stood solid. By the twelfth minute Bandon were back on level terms but After winning the next puck out Peter Murphy was fouled and Stephen Corcoran put over the resultant free. Corcoran was on hand again to point another free before Carrigaline hit a number of wides which allowed Bandon back into the game. One of the defining moments of the half came next with the Bandon corner forward heading for goal Joe Moran made his way across path to flick the ball away to safety. Again Bandon drew level but Tony Murphy and Stephen Corcoran had points for the blues to give them a two point lead heading for half time. In the last minutes of the half Bandon scored two more points to leave the sides level going in at the break.
The score of the game came in the third minute if the second half when Nicholas Murphy won a great ball and passed it to his Brother Peter who split the posts to give Carrigaline the lead again. Bandon replied with a point before Simon O’Brien put Carrig ahead again. The substitutions that the Carrigaline selectors made at half time and just after it were having the desired effect and none more so then David Drake who scored his first point in the ninth minute. This was added to by Wesley O’Brien and Drake again which put Carrigaline in front by four. Bandon came back to within one again but Stephen Corcoran was on hand to extend the lead with a point from play and the the moment that the game was sealed came when Simon O’Brien despatched the sliothar to the back of the net to put Carrig five ahead. Corcoran landed another point from a free to put six between the teams. In the final minutes of the game there was an onslaught on the Carrigaline goal but the Carrigaline defence lead by Man of the Match Paul Foster and Joe Moran stood firm to keep Bandon at bay and seal the historic victory for the South East team.
Every one of the Carrigaline team were top class performers on the day and when you can bring on subs of the calibre of David Drake, Ray Keohane and Conor Hurley it showed the strength in depth on the Carrigaline bench. Paul Foster was the deserving winner of the Man of the Match award on the day after a storming game at full back.
Team: M Webb, C Lynch, P Foster, G Dillon, J Cowhig, J Moran, P Ronayne, P Murphy, G Harrington, M O’Sullivan, T Murphy, S O’Brien, S Corcoran, N Murphy, W O’Brien. Subs: D Drake, R Keohane, C Hurley.
The Club would like to thank the schools for their receptions on Monday morning, to all those who turned out in the village to support the players during the parade, the Carrigaline Pipe Band who lead the team through the village, the local Gardaí who looked after the traffic details and the management and players who made it a wonderful day for the Club and Carrigaline in general.

Carrigaline Claim Under 12 Football League Title
Shamrocks 2-9 Carrigaline 4-8
The past weekend has been a memorable and historic one for all associated with the Carrigaline club with the Intermediate hurlers claiming the first adult County title in the history of the club. Congratulations to all involved in a magnificent achievement.

Last Saturday in Shanbally the Carrigaline under-12 football team got the weekend off to a flyer when they defeated Shamrocks in the South-East League Final.
Carrig were trying to avenge a defeat by the same opposition earlier on in the league campaign. They were also trying to make amends for a South East Championship final defeat by Valley Rovers, after two replays, back in May and this was their opportunity to claim some silverware for the year. Having beaten their close rivals Valley Rovers in the league semi-final two weeks they went into the final confident of their ability to go all the way.
This game started evenly with Mark Linehan putting over the first score from play. Shamrocks responded with three converted frees from Jack Breen. Carrigaline replied with a point from Darragh Buckley and a converted 45 by Matthew O’Reilly had the sides level at 3 points each. Two more frees from Shamrocks had the Shanbally side edging ahead. At this stage Shamrocks were pushing hard at the Carrigaline defence but some excellent defensive work by the six backs and in particular David Kirk at full back, Cathal Murphy corner back, Kieran Kavanagh at centre back and Captain Eoin O’Connor at wing back kept the visitors from conceding a goal. Carrigaline started to attack and with a clever point from Donal O’Regan and a good running move from Daniel O’Reilly converting his shot over the bar and the sides were level again. Two more frees for Shamrocks had them back in front at 7 points to five. Carrigaline applied the pressure but could not break the deadlock. A well taken point by Matthew O’Reilly brought Carrigaline back to within a point but yet another free for Shamrocks brought the game at half time 8 points to 6 points in favour of Shamrocks.
While Carrigaline were down two points at half time they were well aware that the Shanbally side had only one score from play as to the five from play for Carrigaline.
There were some encouraging words said at half time and a few positional switches which saw John Maxwell being introduced at half forward. From the throw in the mid field partnership of Matthew O’Reilly and Daniel O’Reilly led the attack on the Shamrocks goal. Carrigaline were now working very hard and within five minutes Carrigaline had found the back of the net with a goal from corner forward Adam Coholan. Carrigaline tagged on two more points from Mark Linehan and substitute John Maxwell to put Carrigaline 1-8 to 0-8 up. Carrigaline tried to push on but the strength of the Shamrocks pairing of Rory Horgan at centre back and Garry Hartnett at mid field ensured Carrigaline would not have it all their own way. Carrigaline did manage to find the net from a rebound from a Matthew O’Reilly shot which Adam Coholan punched to the net but to the amazement of all present this goal was disallowed. Shamrocks pushed up the field and scored a point to leave Carrigaline just two points ahead. The Carrigaline defence were now under pressure and eventually cracked to allow the Shamrocks lads in and take the lead for the first time in the second half. It was now time for Carrigaline to stand up and some excellent movement and play from the midfield pairing of Daniel and Matthew supported by Darragh Buckley and Darragh Greally had Carrigaline back attacking the Shamrocks defence. This group of players kept the ball moving and set up Adam for his second goal to put Carrigaline back in front. As the game drew to a close and with Carrigaline leading by two points, Matthew O’Reilly picked up the ball in the half forward line and broke through the Shamrocks defence to bury the ball in the back of the net and surely seal this game for Carrigaline. However there was another twist to the game with another free being awarded to Shamrocks in the dying seconds of the game. This free was taken quickly and found the back of the Carrigaline net. Carrigaline were two points up and time up. From the kick out Carrigaline won possession and via the midfield the ball found its way to Mark Linehan on the 13 metre line and he put his shot past the Shamrocks goalie to put Carrigaline 4-8 to 2-9 up. Shortly afterwards the final whistle was sounded to the delight of the Carrigaline supporters and team. Carrigaline captain Eoin O’Connor received the League Champions Plaque and celebrated with his team mates and full bench. On the day Carrigaline had a squad of 32 players and even though a lot of the lads did not get a run out the delight of all of them was evident in their faces as the trophy was carried around the field and back to the club house in Carrigaline to celebrate. This truly was a marvellous game of football by two evenly matched teams and on the day Carrigaline just shaded it. Well done to both sets of players and mentors for their sporting approach to this tightly contested game. The game of football was the real winner.

Premier County Under-16 Football Quarter Final

Carrigaline 2-1 Mallow 1-3
The under-16 footballers continued the winning streak with a last-gasp victory over visitors Mallow on Saturday afternoon. Carrigaline won by the narrowest of margins to book a spot against Carrigtwohill in the semi finals next weekend.

Carrig worked hard all over the field, however there is plenty of room for improvement in the next round.

COUNTY FINAL 2008
This Sunday 12th October will see Carrigaline line out in the Intermediate Hurling County Final for the second time in three years. Two years ago a young Carrigaline side faced South East rivals Ballymartle in the decider and despite scoring 1-19 were still beaten. This added to the number of defeats suffered by the Carrigaline men in the last number years means that the search for the elusive first adult title is still awaited by all involved in the club especially the players involved. Many of them have now been involved in Minor, U21 and intermediate final defeats over time. But true to their character and resolve they keep coming back for more and on Sunday they take on a Bandon team who were defeated in last year’s final.
The team has prepared well all year under the stewardship of Jerry O’Sullivan, Tony O’Donovan and Liam Walsh. No stone has been left unturned in their pursuit of glory and they have raised their performance in every game since they beat St. Finbarr’s in the first round in Shanbally back in early May. Barryroe were next up in July for the Carrigaline lads and a 1-12 to 0-14 scoreline was enough to see Carrig advance to the Semi Final and a game against Kanturk. Played in Coachford on a sunny September evening Carrigaline came out on top thanks to goals from Simon O’Brien and Tony Murphy and seal another final appearance. Every one of the players has played their part during the year with many of the younger players stepping up to the mark with some excellent displays in both the league and the Championship. The “veterans” of the team, Nicholas Murphy, team Captain Peter Murphy, Geoff Dillon and Paul Foster have ensured that there is a good blend of youth and experience going into every game and that experience will be vital come Sunday.
With a throw in time of 2.15pm on Sunday Carrigaline will hope that by approx. 3.30pm all their hard work will have paid off handsomely and victory will be theirs. The Officers, Members and Supporters of the Carrigaline GAA Club would like to wish them the very Best of Luck for Sunday in their quest for success.

Under-16 Footballers Capture SE Title

Carrigaline 1-8 Valley Rvs 1-5
On Saturday last in the replayed under-16 football final at Ballinhassig Carrig got the better of great rivals Valley Rovers and now go on to face Mallow in the County quarter-final at Carrigaline on Saturday next at 3.00p.m.
Carrigaline took the honours in this keenly contested South East Final replay in Ballinhassig. Carrig, with the aid of a gathering breeze, started the better of the two teams with C Mc Sweeney taking the opening score, followed soon after, by a cleverly improvised strike from C O Flynn off the ground. Try as they might Valleys couldn’t breech the Carrig rearguard who conceded a solitary point in the opening period. M Lynch took two points in the opening period and J Kind also pointed to round off the scoring.
How Carrig were to weather the storm in the second half would decide the outcome of this game. C O Flynn showed the way with a key score on the resumption to put 5 points between the sides. However, within minutes the referee gave a penalty which was expertly dispatched to the corner by the Rovers forward. Valleys added a point to put Carrig under serious pressure. The Carrig lads responded magnificently with every man sticking to his guns. L Hanlon, C Malone, S Dwane, C Allen and C O Flynn excelled in this period. M Lynch showed for the ball constantly in the second half taking the pressure off his team mates and P Conway popped up to take what proved to be a crucial score. Conway reached highest to punch the ball to the net from the narrowest of angles. When S O Flynn reached to turn a goalbound effort over the bar Carrig were assured of taking the title. E Moynihan pointed to put an end to the scoring. Carrig can now look forward to a quarter final date with Mallow and on this evidence will be hard to beat. Thanks also to the supporters, especially the “GAA Mams!”

Panel: S O Flynn, P Bresnan, C Malone, C McSweeney, S Dwane, C Allen, L Hanlon, M Hanlon, S Caffrey, D Hickey, C O Flynn, J Kind, M Lynch P Conway, E Moynihan, T Kent, G O Mahony, J Glennon, M Molloy, S Murray, K Creagh, A O Reilly, D O Sullivan, J Buckley.

Carrigdhoun Under-11 C Hurling League

Carrigaline 2-0 Ballygarvan 2-4
Carrigaline got their U-11C South East campaign started with a game against Ballygarvan. Despite the low score line this was a good game of hurling with both defenses taking the accolades. Dylan Murphy at corner back had a particularly good game and keeper Nathan Coleman also deserves great credit.
The midfield battle was very evenly contested with Graham Bowdren putting in an excellent performance.
The best of the Carrigaline forwards were half forwards Niall Quirke and Dylan N`Drangodh. A little bit more urgency in the full forward line could have resulted in more scores for Carrigaline.
This was an inexperienced Carrigaline team with seven players playing their first match but their performance and spirit augurs well for the future.
Carrigaline 1-0 Shamrocks 4-2
Carrigaline’s second team lined out against the Shamrocks for this South East U11C league on Saturday last. The first half produced some lovely hurling but few scores. Stephen O`Reilly marshalled the Carrigaline defence very well with Dylan N`Drangodh playing really well in the half back line.
The midfield battle was very evenly contested with Andrew O`Reilly having an outstanding game.
The score remained tight right up to the last couple of minutes when Shamrocks got two goals in three minutes to emphatically seal victory.

Carrigdhoun Under-11 A Hurling League

Carrigaline 2-4 Ballinhassig 6-3
Carrigaline got their U11 South East league campaign off to a disappointing start with a loss to Ballinhassig. The match was very physical and Carrigaline never really got going in the first half. Ballinhassig hit the ground running and scored 4 early goals.
With Kieran Dwane having to go off injured after only ten minutes Carrigaline were going to be up against it. In fairness Carrigaline came out in the second half and gave it a right good go but the damage had already been done.

Carrigaline 4-4 Courcey Rovers 1-4
Carrigaline played their second South East league game against Courcey Rovers. Having lost their first match Carrigaline were determined to start this game well and dominated the first half with the pick of the scores being a lovely goal from corner forward John Reynolds with a beautiful first time strike to the corner of the net.
The best of the Carrigaline backs was Evan Ryle at fullback ably assisted by Shane Livesey at cornerback.
The best of the Carrigaline forwards were full forward Emmett O`Mahony and corner forward John Reynolds.
The game was played in good spirit throughout and there were some fine hurlers on show from both sides.

County Intermediate Hurling Final
On Sunday next at Páirc Uí Chaoimh Carrigaline Intermediate hurlers face Bandon in the County Final and with both teams having endured the pain of defeat in recent years, a titanic battle for supremacy is in prospect. The Under-Age section of the club sends best wishes to our hurlers and management in their pursuit of that elusive county title and urge everybody to get to the Páirc on Sunday next to cheer on the team.
